As I tell people tho, keep in mind that when the first Oneechanbara came out the character-action genre was still barely even a thing. The most that was out were the OG DMC, Baest Gaem!, Castlevania, and Bujingai (and Rising Zan, but nobody remembers that DX). No Ninja Gaiden, GoW, Bayonetta, God Hand, Genji, Okami... So in a cruel irony to those who think the OGs are trash, Onechanbara is actually one of the earliest and longest running Character Action series XD. And Tamsoft has basically become one of the biggest names in the genre between it, Senran Kagura, and their Neptunia colabs. Which after borderline bankruptcy from Toshinden dying is pretty fucking sweet tbh. As said on previous vids in this series, if it's Tamsoft expect OMEGA BOOBAS and/or Fast-Action. They're like Platinum or Team Ninja, but SOMEHOW with even more fanservice to an intentionally comical extreme. From the death of Toshinden to Onechanbara 3 on the 360 being a full-priced AAA game, basically all the work they got were budget titles, port-jobs, and VN/Dating-sims tho, so the fact that this basically brought them back from the grave is one of the more awesome facts about the Simple Series along with Sandlot making EDF because D3 gave devs free reign to do whatever the fuck they wanted as long as the final product was functional enough. Low risk = high creative freedom. That's basically the perfect way to explain the Simple Series in a nutshell imo.

The funny thing is, having played them, The Boxing and Fighting games in the Simple Series are perfectly serviceable. It was kind of surprising and even a little impressive tbh. They don't look pretty, but they're mechanically on par with the rest of the genre. If you were dirt poor and wanted a game like Fight Night, UFC, or a trad-fighting game, they're honestly totally valid imo. The animations in All-Star Fighters do look jank, but that's just the nature of a 2D fighting game with 3D models. EDF is basically Japanese Serious Sam/Painkiller, which is VERY MUCH a good thing. Not surprising since the few FPS games that have a cult following in Japan are the more arcadey ones (Doom, Quake, Goldeneye, PD, Half-Life to an extent, Halo, etc.). There's even a full MegaWAD by Japanese Doom Mappers (complete with a Hiragana status bar) and a few Doujin Doom-Clones.
Probably a bunch of investors who thought making budget titles could produce a winning formula akin to making low budget films, not realizing that making a game with a poor level of interactivity is like filming a movie with the lens cover on.
The Simple Series sold extremely well (hence the fact that they made over 100 of them on PS2 alone within the space of about four years).
