- There's been a bunch of cheap beginner trumpets appearing on auction sites recently. Some of these are made in India and cost as little as $40 excluding shipping. Are they worth anything? In this video I unbox and review it.

for a $40 trumpet that actually sounded quite pleasant. Some notes were a little squacky but you still sounded better than 90% of the trumpet section at my school
3/6 people in my trumpet section are actually good... Our section is the worst in the band :(
#so true
this is my first year playing trombone
our trumpet section sucks
so do the oboes
together they sound like a flock of dying geese
Fish Art The oboe section was so bad in my band that ALL OF THEM QUIT. And half of them joined Choir immediately afterwards.
Honestly I didn't even think it would sound as good as it did. I was impressed. It's by no means good, but my expectations were really low
SteveCast The person who is playing it matters a lot as well.
The physics of sound work whether or not it's a high quality instrument: the shape of the tube and mouthpiece basically 100% determine the sound (plus of course the player).
Doc Daneeka The quality of metal and production process affects it as well
Jason Staggs
I defy you to prove that a two trumpets with identical bore and mouthpiece shape, but made of different materials, produce a sound different enough for any one to hear the difference.
Doc Daneeka They don't sound different to me but I'm pretty sure any expert or someone who's been playing about 10+ years would be able to tell
"It's worth nothing but it costs $40"
I'm glad my mouth was empty when I heard that! I busted out laughing!!
I'd rather spend $40 on groceries and $1000 on a good used 50 or more year old U.S. or British made instrument. No child deserves a horn that no one would enjoy playing. An instrument lie Trent demos would make a child think: "why did I ever want to play music in the first place". That goes with cheap woodwinds, percussion, and even keyboards as well. Buying a child a piece of junk to learn on? Well then you ought to feel cheap and guilty of shorting your child.
@@CommunistBot Ryan, I'm cheap these days; think I'll get a new spit valve cork on my 1880 Conn Three Star Cornet & play some doodles on a Bundy or Olds I have laying around.

The Blitz Bin thx
The Blitz Bin THANK YOU SO MUCH
The Blitz Bin yes!
The Blitz Bin was 6 mins in and was thinking, "just play the damn thing already!"
omg thank you
Him: "The valves work fine out of the box"
The first valve instantly stuck
I think that was sarcastic like every other thing he said that was "good" about the trumpet
even expensive trumpets come out of the box with little lubricant, thats why valve oil exists.
r/woooosh
r/whoosh
@J J neither do you
It doesnt matter how cheap an istrument is, if a pro plays on a cheap instrument, it would sound way better than if a noob plays on an expensive instrument
Cute way of thinking, but wrong in the real world. Look at instruments as cars in a F1 race, the best drivers are chanceless against any decent amateur if they have to drive an old rusty Fiat
Jan lager penalvert is that an instument
Jan lager penalvert why bring cars into it
Jan lager penalvert its not the same thing
@@manutheeagle6981 If you knew anything about the clasical music scene you would know its exactly the same. A bad instrument will get you nowhere
That would be a good trumpet to send over to the hydraulic press channel.
But for a manufacturing disaster, it actually sounds ok.
Willem Kossen
Yeah, this guy was exaggerating his negative comments on the indian trumpet. It sounded quite nice despite his several sour notes which are prolly his fault and not the fault of the horn
Yeah, almost every problem he described sounds like something every single instrument in school bands suffers from, and the tone was not bad at all. I also couldn't help but laugh my ass off at him suggesting that $40 was *maybe* dinner for one. How fucking expensive is food in New Zealand?
Willem Kos
he means decent dinner. like red lobster or olive garden i think. thats about 40$ for 1
Yeah, of course you clean a new horn first and put on some proper felts and your favourite greases and oils. The stuff that's on is meant for shipping & storing the thing.
Here's my rule: "If you can make a good sound out of a crappy instrument, how much more in a good one."
1) A student will likely never make a good sound out of it; and instead frustrate them
1.5) and maybe so bad they can't stay in tune with the band.
2) Just because you can kind of make a decent sound, a professional musician who is playing for hours and hours in a day can't be tired in the first 10 minutes of playing a poorly made instrument.
2.5) Professional bands don't have time for the musician take several minutes to tune, and they can't risk it falling out of tune during a long performance.
3) Nobody student or professional wants to work harder than they need just to make "good" sounds.
3.5) And this eliminates them from playing more difficult pieces later on.
Conclusion:
That being said, there is reasons not to go insane either with something that's all hype... you need to test our the instrument, look at it, or have someone who knows what to look for look at it. $300 to $1000 is good... and for students, if you want to potentially save money: just rent the same value instrument in case they decide to go for a different instrument or no longer play.
"These valves are so heavy!"
We euphonium players weep for you.
Oml, yes! I hate when trumpet players complain about carrying around their instrument. Like it's honestly 3 pounds my dude.

This review is so negative. What about how it only cost $40?! Pretty amazing value if you ask me, no one was expecting it to be amazing, but it works, and for some people, that’s all they want and can afford.
Thomas Rhodes he’s just giving an honest review
Thomas Rhodes he’s also most likely very good so that ads to it
Maybe but a crap instrument is harder to play and there is the problem. If you have a good instrument to start with then everything is easier.
@@fightfairloseeasy8920 I collect trombones and have a couple cheap U.S. made ones. Poor quality in an instrument of any sort will discourage a beginning student from want to play at all. Put a few bucks out an buy your child a Conn. If you can't afford a Conn, hope Bundy is still around. Bach & Conn rule no matter what kind of brass instrument.
@Matthew Harjo Conn does have the best horns, but the best trombone I ever played is my totally restored New York Bach Stradivarius Model 6, manufactured in 1935.
I love the absolute sarcasm given in this video
Lol yeah
I know!!!
it may be shit but never knock on a musicians instrument it may be all they can afford to do what they love
Except instruments like this are more likely to put people off playing music than encourage it. I've played on many shit instruments in my time, and it sucks the life out of you.
Especially brass instrument. I played one, a French horn, not too shabbily made, badly maintained (communal thing), have DENTS, that is what i tried to use to learn, but after i tried a brand new one, i realized how it is not normal for it to be so hard to get the note, and having headache trying to play high note, not to mention how it is supposedly easy to press the button(? what do you call it in english?)
@Willy sandi
It is called the valve, I'm pretty sure.
Mugino Shizuri maybe, not sure myself as i had said
@Willy Sandi
For a French Horn? We call them "triggers" in English.
@Mugino Shizuri
Not a valve, because most French Horns are rotary instruments, not valve instruments.
In all fairness, my $5500 trumpets valves were sticky too when I opened it up for the first time. The music store greased and oiled it up for me prior to leaving with it. This seems like a good cheap investment for someone who may be unsure if the trumpet is the instrument for them. Would rather spend under $100 than thousands or more on a "good" instrument just to find out you hate it.
Him: “It barely moves

I should make a T-shirt that says
"Kuaw! Al Cass smells like Syphilis! "
Syphilis Asian Instrument Co.
Ah, like that grunge song, “Smells like teen Syphillis.”
You seem to have much experience with syphilis
I started with a cheap trumpet. I feel like it made me a better player since I had to work more to get a better sound. After many years of playing, I got myself a good horn. If you really want to play, it doesn't matter if you have a hose and a funnel. Keep at it. Keep playing.
I can honestly say that on a couple of occasions I literally had to “LOL” while watching this video. The syphilis comment was hilarious.
I’m increasingly of the opinion that when it comes to trumpets the mouthpiece may in many instances be more important than the instrument itself.
To me this trumpet actually didn’t sound bad at all, especially in light of the fact that you’d just unboxed it shortly prior to lubing and playing it.
Having said that, the crucial question is, “Will it stand the test of time?” That’s the area that I question this trumpet’s value in. For someone who just “fools around” with the instrument or who just wants to get an idea of how it feels to hold and play a trumpet this instrument probably would be cost-effective. For a more serious student it’d probably be advisable to go with even a Chinese horn that’s received a fair number of positive reviews online.

Danner Massey If you have any place criticizing me, then you know that when you move the valve tuning slides, you're supposed to press down the corresponding valve. If so, then you would understand my concern. My use of Billy mays is unwarranted, and I understand if you're criticizing me on my poor sense of irony. lol would you rather have me say "holy Denis wick"?

A rare find indeed. I believe the syphilis trumpet dates back to the early 1700’s.
I'm not a professional by any means, but that trumpet definitely sounds much better than those plastic ones. The tone produced definitely depends on the player, and you got a better tone than most. I have an old Olds cornet with the old professional valve block, or I'd consider getting something like this. I'm a low brass player myself, but I like having a trumpet and horn to fiddle around on. Nice find for 40 bucks! =P
thats nothing, got a trumpet with the serial number scratched off from a garage sale for 20 bucks, broke in a month, but it was fun throwing it across a football field while it still worked...

Hey, Trent, you must know that moving the 1st or 3rd valve slide without depressing that valve is a really bad idea. It creates suction, resistance and eventually air leaks. that's why that 3rd valve slide was so tough to move.
I'm sure he knows and just doesn't care because of the quality of the trumpet.
I like how his concluding review is interrupted by realizations of a couple more malfunctions in the product 😂

Yamaha make good quality instruments in my experience. They are modestly priced & the cost/quality ratio is excellent.

Heya Trent...So you have done some very helpful reviews. Much appreciated but I am now trying to narrow down..what Trumpet or Coronet (would it be ok for a beginner to start with a Coronet)?? WOULD YOU buy if you only had around $180 USA to spend for a beginner???

Assuming everything on this video is true, damn you are a really good player to be able to play that well on a horn like that
EV he used a really nice mouthpiece. Not the one it came with. That, and a steady supply of air will do the trick.
you should do a review of the allora pocket trumpet
Got one, it's not a bad horn at all. Seen it has some good ratings beforehand.
I got one... not as easy to play as good student trumpet.. machining of the valves is a bit rough, but it looks GREAT and works reasonably well - oh and it looks awesome ;-)
I actually got a trumpet from the same company and he's right about the "worth nothing but costs $40"
I would call it quite good value for money.
There are simple brass faucets that cost more but are a lot easier to make.
I can imagine quite a few places around the world where these would allow you to equip a school orchestra or a few musicians at a local church.
I've been to places like Brazil, where instruments in this price range would open up access to music to a whole new range of people.
make a boxing video and give it to someone you do not like
Would something like this be good for a woodwind player that wants to learn a brass instrument as a side instrument?/
samocamo123 I would say go for it
samocamo123 if it's just for fun yeah but if you get serious upgrade
Start with baritone
I’d say find a inexpensive Yamaha student horn, or a more reputable brand if you have any seriousness about learning another instrument, even if it’s just for personal fulfillment. You will be kicking yourself down the road after you’ve been playing for a while and actually try a better made horn, even if it’s just a student line horn, they will be much better made and you will sound much better and feel more confident playing it.

I bought a trumpet for $25 on ebay from some random guy in China and the lead pipe is at a different angle to the bell and it hurts to hold but it's been good as an intro of trumpet as a second instrument (after trombone) for me because I already understood brass and could get around the instruments (many) shortcomings.

The valves are probably solid brass. Nice brass valves are usually hollow to make them lighter. This makes nice valves more expensive than cheap valves even though they have less metal.
Where did you buy this can you leave the link in the description?
Some points were made in the video- beginner's instrument, cheap instrument for kids, maybe a (crappy) practice marching instrument.
A great way to shorten a budding musical career.
Norman Canter Eh. I probably couldn't tell the difference between my brother using this and his Yamaha trumpet, and he's been playing for a few months. For a beginner who's undecided about their instrument, it's probably a good investment to buy this before an actual trumpet that costs way more. A beginner won't be able to tell the difference between the two anyways.
