I was born and raised in Anchorage. My mother was born in Anchorage, grandparents and great grandparents homesteaded Anchorage back in the 30's and 40's. Several streets off of Fireweed Ave are named after them. My great grandfather helped start the Anchorage Museum. That being said, I avoid the place like the plague. It's definitely not the same place I grew up in during the 80's and 90's. As far as growing food goes, you can easily grow a massive amount of food here. I have. And I try to improve my production each season. I'm hoping to break ground on an underground greenhouse this summer in the hopes of having fresh greens through most of the winter. Thanks Nick for the reminder of why I left Skankorage almost two decades ago...
In the early '70's as a fresh graduate from Nursing school, I entertained the idea of going to Alaska to work in clinics for the workers on the Alaskan Pipeline. The pay was phenomenal. I seriously considered it but eventually passed on it. It occurred to me I might not like being one of just a few women in a given area. I was very young, pretty cute, and figured out it was not a great idea. Seeing Anchorage today, I am very happy with my decision. Thanks!

The thing with with winter cities is that even if the crime or poverty isn't as high, winter is just as unpleasant as either of those 2 problems. So, when you have all 3 problems present, it makes it a rough place.

I used to live in Kenai Alaska on the Cook inlet in early 2000's. It was noce and my daughter really enjoyed school there and made friends quickly. Her 5th grade field trip was a trip down to Homet Alaska where they ferried from Homet Spit yo the Kachemak Bay and stayed in bunks. They took marine samples from the Kachemak Bay and studied them. They also raised Fry Salmon in an aquarium at school. She had a blast there. She loved stopping by the beach every day after school and watching the large amount of American Eagle's there. I wish Nick had been able to visit some of the areas that are more beautiful than wasting so much time and money in Anchorage 😢. It looks much the same to me on his video as it did when I was there. The kids had soccer games there so we frequently made the drive from Kenai. Sometimes we would get halfway there and have to turn back because the avalanches would cover the highway. Sometimes when the neighboring volcanoes would erupt the ash would carry and fall on our city. We had 🫎 moose, bears, eagle, puffins, right in our front yard. Our Chihuahua mix would go after those moose like they were nothing 😅. We kept a keg of Alaskan Amber right there in the garage and our upstairs floors were heated, and no air conditioning. Mosquitos as big as dragon flies. We shopped at 3 Bears grocery store and the thrift shop had the best cokd weather clothes and gear that people would get rid of when moving away. I'm sad that the Johnson's had a crummy trip. I'm also glad I don't live up there anymore.🎉 If you visit just fly into Anchorage and rent a car and get the hell out of the city and explore. Is funny how those Alaska grosery prices seemed cheap back in August compared to the actual grocery prices on the main land right now in January during the actual administration.

I went to Anchorage in 2021 to visit my sister. We went to walk DT and it was definitely sketchy! We had to go inside stores to get away from crazy homeless people several times! My sister lives on base but worked DT. She said the homeless people would always break into cars right after they were parked in the winter while the car was still warm. It’s sad. Really sad. But for some reason there is a ton of people there from NC. Every where we went we met someone from NC that now lived there. It was pretty wild.

Spent most of my childhood and early adult years in Anchorage. Graduated from UAA and miss how it was there back in the 80s. I spent my summer of 1988 in Anchorage and Valdez. My uncle was recruited from his home in Riverside CA to work on the pipeline when it opened because of his military and educational background. My father was also asked and wouldnt go and we stayed in San Diego. Im not an outdoorsy guy at all and could not wait to leave. My Uncle kept asking me to come back even after we moved to NC. No thanks. He still lives in Anchorage at age 80. Not a happy guy and hes very wealthy. My father stayed broke and was much happier. Really enjoyed this video though. Your work is an easy enjoyable watch. Brought back some real memories. When are you going to Barrow?
Alaska could EASILY create indoor growing factory's. they have unlimited oil reserves at their disposal, these gigantic greenhouses would also double duty as barracks for workers and even at some point entire community's.
I'm from Ireland and was always desperate to see Anchorage and Alaska in general, went there for 6 days in July 2023, there wasn't many/any homeless or problematic people around the city that I noticed that time. For anyone visiting anchorage, hire a car and go visit the kenai peninsula, whittier, turnagain arm, eagle river, talkeetna, denali and fairbanks! Explore the state while you're at anchorage. Can't wait to go back to anchorage some day, if you get good weather for it it's a gorgeous place in its own right
I’m glad you showed us this part of Alaska because I’m trying to go there this spring and I think I will avoid Anchorage. I will go to Fairbanks and Denali Park. I am hoping to see all the beautiful forest and national parks, but I want to avoid places like Anchorage? I don’t think it’s necessary. I’m glad you showed this. So many people in Alaska don’t like being around other people and that’s why they have those private planes so they can fly out to really secluded areas there’s a show called Arctic mariner, and that guy really lives in the middle of absolutely nowhere he has to fly there.
A chart shows Alaska oil production was up to 2 million barrels a month in 1988. Since then it's continuously declined down to 450,000 barrels a month. Still significant but the boom days are well over.
that was a baby moose crossing the road, the mother moose are twice as big! as well we grow some of the largest vegetables 🥕 around! World record size great summers for growing!
Wow who would've thought ! I hear people all the time doing a cruise to Alaska. Nick , did you go to Alaska after the inauguration day /vlogs in Washington? when this was filmed ?
I mean every city is a dump in my opinion, they all have upper and lower class neighborhoods homeless and drug areas and nice areas it just depends where you go in a city, the reason to live in a city is access to resources, stores close by not sure why else being it is more expensive to live there
I stayed downtown last year. I ordered food from a place I saw was across the street from the hotel so I crossed the trolley tracks when the food was supposed to be ready. It was more of a club than a restaurant. They had a hookah pipe when you walked in. People were smoking weed all over the bar.😂 Marijuana, rec or medical, isn't even legal there but the cops stayed away.
I went to Jr high and high school in Anchorage. It was beautiful back then. Now, I live in the wilderness, 25 miles from willow ALASKA and I don't visit Anchorage very often the place I lived has been torn down and a shopping mall is there now. It's not nice like back in the 80s. It's like not welcoming or made for people to get in and get out, don't stick around. It used to be sick around for awhile, not anymore!
You started the video in Fairview, and is very shady in that store the mouthwash is locked up, they won't steal it they just open it and drink on the spot.
All 50 states. While that's impressive, not too many people have done that. I listen to a pilot who said he flew alcohol into Alaska and made good money with the markup because some of the counties are alcohol free and the natives can't drink so they leave and go to a city where they can drink unfortunately
I’ve been to Anchorage 9 times in the past 2 years for work and Anchorage is the biggest dump in the US not hyperbole, mix in the oddest people you will ever meet and you got a big time dumpy city
Very very very hard to imagine it being worse than San Fran, L.A, and Oakland. Back in 2022 I was in San Fran. Had an idea of what to expect 3rd world country would w huge upgrade

I've yet to watch also, Alaska is facinating, bet I could live in one of those boarded up shacks easy, prolly beats Metro Baltimore, taxes and crime can't be as bad that's for sure. That and I'm sure the residents don't speak in a code... I don't know if they have any Aldi's though. 🤔 Thanks for turnin me on to Nick! 👍🤠 🇺🇲
I've seen documentaries about certain towns in Alaska being like this and people moving there to get away from the big cities to live off the land as farmers while some parts of Alaska are like this not all of them are though but nice to see some of Anchorage at least the nice areas have a great week thanks.🏔️👍🇺🇲

This is a fairytale
They have large warehouse in FBKS....they are full of marijuana
@@JudyGoodwin-l9b I was thinking more like carrots and other assorted veggie crops. lol.
Can't wait to go back to anchorage some day, if you get good weather for it it's a gorgeous place in its own right
We always say Los Anchorage is not Alaska but you can get there from here.
Cool stuff your doing great Nick
I’m glad you showed us this part of Alaska because I’m trying to go there this spring and I think I will avoid Anchorage. I will go to Fairbanks and Denali Park. I am hoping to see all the beautiful forest and national parks, but I want to avoid places like Anchorage? I don’t think it’s necessary. I’m glad you showed this. So many people in Alaska don’t like being around other people and that’s why they have those private planes so they can fly out to really secluded areas there’s a show called Arctic mariner, and that guy really lives in the middle of absolutely nowhere he has to fly there.
"I want to be homeless in Anchorage"-says nobody.
Don't winters last 9 months?
Yep
Lol😂 right lol
A chart shows Alaska oil production was up to 2 million barrels a month in 1988. Since then it's continuously declined down to 450,000 barrels a month. Still significant but the boom days are well over.
Thank you for sharing Nick!
that was a baby moose crossing the road, the mother moose are twice as big! as well we grow some of the largest vegetables 🥕 around! World record size great summers for growing!
Wow who would've thought ! I hear people all the time doing a cruise to Alaska. Nick , did you go to Alaska after the inauguration day /vlogs in Washington? when this was filmed ?
I did an Alaskan cruise back in 2011 and we sure did not stop in Anchorage LOL
@chriskelly509 now I know why 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back in 1986 when i lived there in kenai i didnt see any of that homeless crap just the college kids working at the canaries living in the gravel pits
Anchorage looks like Duluth, MN. Northern city decline and liberal fed.
I mean every city is a dump in my opinion, they all have upper and lower class neighborhoods homeless and drug areas and nice areas it just depends where you go in a city, the reason to live in a city is access to resources, stores close by not sure why else being it is more expensive to live there
Anchorage is in the top percentile for crime. For any size city
You should come to Memphis Tennessee. Anchorage has nothing on Memphis, it’s disgusting here.
Yeah Anchorage is really not that bad. I went to Memphis once in the 90s it was scary
@@Mike54877People are just cruel, it’s so sad.
Alright 👍 thanks for sharing!!! Waving from winnemucca NV
👋
Super interesting ! Thanks 😃
I don't drink, but I sure smoked a lot of pot when I was there.
I was there in '79 ...it was known as Matanuska Thunder Fk ‼️😆😆😆
Spot. On brother man! Awesome job thank you 🙏 ☮💕
I went to Jr high and high school in Anchorage.
When I visited Alaska in june.. Anchorage was Crazy! I've never seen such crazy homeless people
Mappy gets stoned and gets lost. He had to google to find out where he was.
He did George!
You started the video in Fairview, and is very shady in that store the mouthwash is locked up, they won't steal it they just open it and drink on the spot.
Alcohol is a drug. Cannabis is a godsend.
Insomnia was a great Alaska film with Robin Wms. and Pacino.
I love your videos!
Good job Nick.
In Fallout, the Chinese invade Anchorage.
I don't think they have to now.
Your narrative is false. Alaska: 55% went for Trump; 41%. It is a very red state
The Kenai Peninsula and Matsu Valley really helped Trump win the state.
I've lived in a lot of different cities and towns. I've never seen as many beggars as Burlington NC. Come see!
Because of hurricane?
For me it was San Diego California everywhere I went I had people panhandling
@@chriskelly509 when I first moved here they would come knock on my door, especially at night.
@momentswithmitch5053 wow! That's hardcore... crazy.
Great Video
That is so gross to be served old spoiled smelly Salmon at 33:54.
Nick ❤be safe brother
But then I have no idea about Alaska, and I for what it’s worth it would t surprise me if you were right..
Had the pleasure of going 2 times. We stayed away from the city’s. Off grid away from the junkies . Only wildlife and ocean.
I live in remote Alaska and used to love going to Anchorage. I cringed when I have to go now.
With Trump it,s coming back
I like Trump too. But be careful what you wish for. Yea it's great what he's doing but at this point he has not done anything for the American people. We will see.
@@carolynknighit1395😂😂 you don’t think getting rid of illegals we’re paying for isn’t helping? 😂😂
Lol
@@carolynknighit1395 lol what
Try making this video in the winter!😂😂😂❤❤❤
Great work as usual, Nick.
Yeah that doesn't really look like a place I need or want to go.
Great video Nick, fully watched 🐨🦘🇦🇺
I've yet to watch also, Alaska is facinating, bet I could live in one of those boarded up shacks easy, prolly beats Metro Baltimore, taxes and crime can't be as bad that's for sure. That and I'm sure the residents don't speak in a code...
I don't know if they have any Aldi's though.
🤔
Thanks for turnin me on to Nick!
👍🤠 🇺🇲
@JohnShinn6078 - You're welcome John, 3am I'm still awake
Yay!! ❤️❤️
Hey guys! You're friends??
@@NickJohnson Through RUclips, a fan and friend, I'm in Baltimore, Dumpster Diving Adelaide Simon is in Australia of course.
what a shame.
I've seen documentaries about certain towns in Alaska being like this
and people moving there to get away from the big cities to live off the land as farmers while some parts of Alaska are like this not all of them are though but nice to see some of Anchorage at least the nice areas
have a great week thanks.🏔️👍🇺🇲
I’ve visited Anchorage once back in 2012 it was nice plenty of nice bars with collections of beer cans and ice countertops. You’re telling me it’s not like that anymore?
Mappy and I share the same birthday. Well, wadda u know? Thanks for making the sacrifice for the rest of us, Nick. I wonder if Canada has let itself go to seed like so much of the U.S.? My wife wants to go see ‘Future America’, Greenland, but would it become more sketch, janky and ghetto if it did become part of the U.S.? Glad you showed the good parts of Anchorage - maybe there’s hope.
To be frank, after this video. You couldn't pay me to live there.
The more we progress, the more we regress.
Come to the 51st state!!!! …. Alberta
Great job Nick, one of your best. 👍
I've lived in Fairbanks 21 years and avoid Anchorage at all costs.
I've lived in a getto in Guatemala City and Anchorage is worse than that.
Howcome?
Zero accountability for criminals.
Wow It must get so cold! Also wild animals😬
No way in a million years would I ever want to live there. Visit? Yea.. to see the nature.
Hi Nick, are you guys still in Wilmington?🙃
