CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) tells his dad (Chris Cooper) about his hopes and dreams and that he's quitting the coal mine for good.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

His father is such a great character; he’s presumably been brought up in Coalwood, so he has lived his life with success being either excelling at being a miner, or football bringing you to college. He doesn’t reject rocketry because it’s too academic, he just can’t conceive that something like rocketry could lead to a successful life outside of Coalwood. It almost makes him a bit tragic.
He is a tragic character, but he's also the star of this film in my opinion... because he's actually a really damn good father figure at the end of the day. Every one with a father sees a lot of the same stubborn narrowmindedness in their dads to a degree... but while Chris Cooper's character here might have been disappointed here or there, at the very end of the day, he let his son be himself - which is something a lot of dads just couldnt do without a big outburst, as they want to live vicariously through their son...
And you gotta remember, this is a man born in 1912. He just didn't understand how rockets would lead to a career, not realizing that the real value to it is understanding the math and science behind it. Even if he couldn't be a rocket engineer, he had a future as some sort of engineer or scientist or even educator like his own mentor (the fantastic miss riley). He didn't have to work such a physically demanding and dangerous job in the coal mines. His dad wanted what was best for him, he was just from a different time.
He wasn't brought up in Coalwood, in fact it was Gary. He moved to Coalwood in 1934, when the superintendent of the mine at the time the Captain taught him everything he knew. Actually theres a lot in this book that was left out. In fact certain people were even left out, Tag is one of them he was the Coalwood sheriff, he had no real power but did things around town.
Yeah that tends to happen with new technologies. New job opportunities are created. If you told somebody twenty years ago that you wanted to make money putting video's on the internet everybody would think you were out of your mind, now it's a real possibility if you're good enough.
Thank you for this comment. It was insightful.
Jake Gyllenhall and Chris Cooper were a perfect pairing. Having grown up in a similar town not too far from Coalwood it’s inspiring that someone got out to pursue their dreams.
Alternate scene: Dad, I wanna mine, but in space.......
Dad's mind blown
That sounds more like a Bruce Willis thing.
Elon Musk "Dad I do wanna get rich off the back of slave labour. I just wanna do it in space."
This made me laugh out loud so hard!
I want to mine space dad
@@Glitcher2000 Bruce Willis is more of a drilling type of a person.
- I DONT WANNA CLOSE MY EYESSSSSSUHHH! I DONT WANNA FAAAAALL ASLEEEEEP...
One of my favorite movies ever. My grandfather took me to see this movie. This one was my favorite of all the movies he took me too and it meant a lot.
Such a powerful moment between a father and a son.
At the end you can see on John's face that he's actually proud of Homer for doing what he did and sticking to it
Chris Cooper should have won an Oscar for this role.
I love Chris, but he was beaten by a superior performance.
@@kbanghart from who?
@@jeantokin1 looks like James Coburn won. Haven't seen the movie though.
@@kbanghart must have been some performance
@@jeantokin1 well, I really liked October sky. I just didn't think it was the very best. And didn't think it was Jake's best role.
Often times in life when I'm all beaten up and not really sure if I can achieve my goal, I think of this scene and it inspires me to keep following my dream no matter what.
For a son to stand up to his father, stand his ground & say something as ambitious as that. !!!!
As a Dad, it hurts so hard to watch your son reject your life. As a son, you have to understand that too.
My 6th Grade Science Played this in class. Made my day. Now I feel like I want to do what I want to do now. Thank you.
Go for it. We need people with that passion now, more than ever. Better yet, do exceptionally well in your studies (if you're in school that is), go to Annapolis, get in good with the Navy, and then NASA, and your dream will come true.
My dad constantly told me everything I liked was stupid. It really takes its toll.
Your dad sounds ignorant and/or jealous, do what you want to do and master the art of not giving a f*ck
Depends what it was, cocaine abuse, gambling, etc 😂 he could be right.
I'm a dad, and i'm so sorry that happened to you. I don't know if he was working through something or what, but I am sorry that happened.
Growing up without a father was tough for me , but everytime I see how other guys Father's treated them and looked at their dreams and a waste of time. I kinda realized having my father maybe might not have always been a great thing. Sometimes you gotta be your own father
This was and still is a highly inspirational movie.
It’s ironic how his father wants to work down inside the earth itself, while his son wants to work better yet live above the Earth.
Yeah thats pretty much the main dichotomy the movie is founded on. Made it a great one!
This movie resonates with me so much as an adult. My father was a coal miner and in my area that's what you done. I had a hobby growing up that later in my adult life I turned into a very successful career that I do to this day. Its the complete opposite of my fathers career and growing up he would say the same things to me. Its nonsense you need to do this, why you still messing around with that stuff it will get you nowhere in life, its a waste of money and time, yada yada. I never ended up working for NASA but I ended up being a broadcast engineer working for multiple big name news and radio stations throughout the country.
1:56 the look my dad gave me when I told him I wasn’t cut out to be a preacher like him. It took him awhile to come around to it; but his path in life was his, not mine.
You were brave. It's not easy for a son to stand up to his father. I'm glad he eventually accepted your choice of a path in life.
He became a rocket scientist.
How proud is his dad that his boy became a rocket scientist?
It's not rocket science....well in this case it is...
Yeah, but it ain't music theory
more parents need to be like that.... do what u want,. but missing work isn't cool... he was not very supportive, but instilled values in his son that kids do not have today.
agree
He was supportive in his own way in the book the concrete that was supposedly ruined it wasn’t and he was the one who showed him how to do trigonometry. I think for him space was an unknown job field that was brand new and some people thought it was a waste of money and time. They didn’t really understand the value that we understand now.
JAKE GYLLENHAAL IS ONCE IN A LIFETIME ACTOR🔥🔥🔥🤯
Currently a physics major and when school get overwhelming I watch this movie to remind myself why I'm studying physics...because I want to work for NASA one day. I too have a dream to go into space and work for the organization that makes it possible
Harold Diaz you can do it brotha! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
Harold Diaz
Apply for a job at SpaceX
Harold Diaz Remember this...
It took almost 30 years, but Homer did go into space aboard the Space Shuttle.
Keep it up!! You’ll get up there some day
If you believe you can achieve
1:52 Well son, going down there is like going up there. Dark and endless.
October Sky was shown to me and My class in seventh grade, I absolutely loved it. So glad I found clips on it on youtube!
Homer probably felt relieved and devastated after this. Relieved that he stood up to his dad and spoke his heart, but devastated that he broke his dads heart. All for the best though.
I saw this in my freshman year of highschool. It inspired me. I was lucky that the book Rocket Boys, written by Homer himself was in the list of summer reading the following year. The whole story still amazes me to this day.
Why does the father have such a hard time understanding his son? Its not rocket science...
ba dum tss
This comment is *way* underrated.
@@user-qz3hb9kk5u i had too
Ok
Lmao
My dad was a coal miner in 60' and 70' and He never wanted me to be miner. I became a electrician God bless him ❤
The way the father acts towards his son in this scene is still a common practice today. Because hands on work is more important than anything outside of it. It's got enough workers. Some people can step outside of it.
aint that the truth, i followed in my dads foots steps and im on the oil rigs now.....always wondered if things woulda been different if id joined the marines like i wanted.
"I'm never going down there again"- when the girlfriend doesn't wash
lol wtf
Yikes
That level of bad means one word: Dealbreaker.
Happened to me, the first time I asked to go down there.
"I wanna go into 'spice' ..."
you suck
He meant the spice mines of Kessel lol
which one? I was always thought baby spice was hottest..
“THE SPICE MUST FLOW!!!!”
“The Spice, I can feel it, I can taste it, I can breathe it”
Son : Dad, I'm studying rocket science and I'm building a rocket.
Dad : stop that nonsense. And come work in the mines.
One of my favorite scenes from any movie
The greatest movie about one man’s dreams I have ever seen
I've never seen this movie before but as soon as I heard "the coal mine is your life..." I said, out loud, to myself "I don't want your life".... and now I must go watch Varsity Blues for the 87th time!
It's interesting how his dad is concerned about the rockets and telling him to be careful but sent him down in a mine to work. It is also interesting that while he seems to not care most of the time he does love his son and have concern for him. He also instills a good work ethic, work first hobbies second. That probably helped Homer go where he did in life.
Its what living in west virginia is like
All the place has its coal, they are very proud of their coal. Dknt dare insult their coal
They dont aspire for more than those coal mines and damn anyone who wants to leave it behind
Sadly a lot of people out there still have that mentality.
A lot dont, thank god, but some people never change
Space? Space! SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!!
Holy fucking shit that 'joke' is hella' annoying.
“We’re in space…”
Marius Langeland I’m in space!
His dad isn’t even the Villian really. He is just a man who is wanting the best for his son the only way he knows how
I didn’t realize this was Jake Gyllenhaal when I watched this in class
Not everyone is destined for an ordinary life
Hollywood, through their serious movies (and sometimes the not so serious ones too), has taught me some life lessons and social matters better than school. This moment is inspirational. That is what I miss from Hollywood today.
The moment that you realize your son is better than you. Pride and humiliation at the same time. Chris Cooper is one of our best character actors!
"You keep goin, youre gonna have my job some day"
Certainly a simpler community with simpler contentment with life. And jobs that actually paid a wage you vould live off of.
And yet Homer wanted more and reached for more.
Living wages dont kill aspirations or ambition.
It doesn’t matter if I’m able to make movies from the 90’s in my opinion that I can manage by going to high school without losing focus to leave it all behind.
This movie is my inspiration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you mrs Barnsley for showing me this movie
Plot twist-This was the movie behind SpaceX.
Maybe I have no clue but it seems like a man who’s worked his whole life in a coal mine would have hope for a better future for their son, and that their interest in something like rocket science would be inspiring more than anything else
Well at the time going into space wasn't something you could reasonably believe was a future for a kid. Also uneducated parents are divided on this topic. If you can make a living and have a family without education, what is it's value beyond learning to read and write. Others think, I want my child to have more than me so I place their education high as my priority.
You see it a lot with math education. Parents don't use math in their lives so they don't place value in it.
I remember when I first watched the film as a kid, I thought of people like him and Mr. Turner as the main antagonists. That’s far from the truth now that I’m older, especially the dad. He always cared about and loved his son, he just wanted Homer to be successful and didn’t see rockets as a good career path (though he obviously did consent to it as a hobby). When you think about it, aside from wanting/expecting Homer to follow in his footsteps, most of the wisdom he imparts on Homer can be applied to pretty much every line of work- especially work ethic.
And that’s a large part of being a good parent.
I don't know why but i feel that proving his innocence is respectable enough to skip work at a job he hates
I mean I remember watching this when it came out and now seeing this clip makes me feel old af
If you haven't seen this movie I would highly recommend it
I saw this movie in school. Great movie and performance from Jake
1999 wants to go to space, 2017 achieves his dream.
I wanna go into spice
Be sure to bring the Millennium Falcon. Try to beat Han’s record!
i dont if its only me chriss copper looks like he had a good nap
I like the way he says "space." He must have practiced that a lot of times.
This is a great movie. I love it.
Powerful movie
Inspiring:-)
And he found calvin.
Love this movie!
I'm so happy these people are out of work. Coal mining is terrible, I wouldn't want any of my fellow humans getting cancer.
My dad wanted me to be a plumber. And I'm a plumber 😭
Hey man, Mario is a plumber, too! Don’t feel bad :)
Plumbers make good money yo
Well my dad wanted me to be a butcher so I did and I am but not currently working as one.. I know one thing..plumbers get a hell of a lot more money then butchers do.
I feel you my dad wanted me to be a trucker so I became one lol
We need plumbers man. Keep it up. It's just society that doesn't appreciate them to the degree they should.
The Turning point in the plot
Excellent movie!!
Oh, this is a great relief to see. In the movie "American Beauty" Chris Cooper was such an abusive father. He beat up his son pretty badly and then he shot his neighbor, played by Kevin Spacey.
Such a great film
There are a lot of ways to
honor thy father
His dad wants him to follow in his footsteps, which isnt unreasonable. Irony is that the coalwood mine closes in 86, meaning Homer would have had no real future if he stayed in the mines.
Spiritually speaking he eventually does go to space
Cooper is the ultimate movie closed minded dad.
01:28 ...
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to build a model ro- ... Wait...
"I'm never goin down there again" "wait two blondes in bikinis walking", I changed my mind.
This doesn't even begin to make sense
Thumbs Up #719 I am, Tuesday late afternoon 23 April 2019! Expect great things out of your children, just don’t expect them to follow in your same path.
The lesson his father needs to learn is that your children don't live for you. You live for them. And trying to live your life again through your offspring is not only wrong, but futile. You raise them up and guide them. But when they're able to stand on their own two feet and think for themselves, they're going to walk their own path. Not yours. Even sometimes if it means they have to walk away from you for a little while. Cause when it's all said and done, they're going to do what makes THEM happy, not you. And all you can do is to be proud of what you created.
1:51 you're welcome
Don’t ever follow family foot steps! If you like it I get it! You can do better!
It was ..still is .,..a remarkable achievement.....once was named..ROCKET BOYS.... original movie.
@elmsairheads do you know if he wanted to go into space and be an Astronaut why he was a rocket scientist instead?
He may not have made the physical qualifications to be an astronaut.
Is anyone else sick of the old navy ads 😆
The sad irony is that Homer never actually went into space.
Derek Zoolander, rocket scientist.
dang boi these characters have an accent but I can't blame myself bc this movie was in 1999 so meh whatever.
I cant fw dads who dont work so their son can have more of a life than they had not the exact same one
What balls to tell your father as a teenager
¿Qué hace esto en la lista de reproducción de JS Cuber "Récords Nacionales"?
Is that the voice of Smokey from cars 3
idk
I think you might need education in some kind of a science to be an astronaut. So, paths take people?
What?
Dont you get sassy with green goblin mr.hickam
Wilem Dafoe is Green Goblin
This was a while ago, before the new Spider-Man had even been released, so I thought since he was playing as Norman Osborn, I assumed that he would be green goblin like wilem dafoe, but I was wrong.
But he never did.
Does anyone know the music playing in the background?
Ryan Patton darude sandstorm
Sorry this is so late, but the name of the song is "It is a thing of Glory" It's a part of the October Sky OST, and I love it so much.
not have before read the book after saw movie.
What?
Love that this movie is about that same man who dunked on that chick on Twitter for bragging about her nasa internship
He did it to help her. I heard they made things right and she ended up getting her internship back.
Thumbs up f you read the book before you saw the movie.
theres a book ?? i can only borrow the DVD (movie ) in my local library..
what the heck,,, theres a book!!!!?????!?!?!i cant find it !!!helpppp
The book is called Rocket Boys ^
u wanna to go to spess?
Kids on dope- Red Foreman
tiktok brought me here!😊
And years later.. he and his team found the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars (Life 2017).
If my kid was in rocket science trying to go to space I would kick his hands
wise decision not to go down there again considering every coal miner in the ole days died young of rotten lungs...
