A true rare occurrence of a sequel coming decades later and actually living up to the hype. The scene with Iceman is so heart wrenching on it’s so tough to see what throat cancer has done to Val Kilmer

Except the scene where he smashes his wings into icemans coffin. That was super cringe and idk why military movies do that, it's specifically a navy SEALs thing, it has nothing to do with the rest of the navy or military.

Yeah, I know that it is a wrong comparison (no atmospheric drag so to speak), but it is stil interesting to see what is going on with technology at the moment.
Just to clarify, Mach 10 and 10 G are two very different things. Mach 10 is ten times the speed of sound roughly 7600 miles per hour. 10G is 10 times the force of gravity, which happens under extreme, sudden changes in direction, such as what is basically beyond sustainable loads for most aircraft, even military fighters. If you weigh 200 pounds, at 10G it feels like 2000 lbs. They could be made to handle more, but the pilot cannot. Typical limits are 7 to 9G. The fact that 10 was used in both the speed and G loads in this story was coincidental. Rooster wasn't out of ammunition, he was out of flares for self-defense. He still had missiles for air-to-air.
Funny, I thought it was the missile exploding.
They have some safety margins also. I've heard the F-15 for example can take about 13G (9G x 1,5 margin) without theoretically shortening life span of the structure. But anything over that will gradually degrade it. I dont think there is a physical G-imiter on that plane either other than you'll get the usual warning within the safety margin at 9G.
@@martinsv9183 I remember reading about the F-18 when it was new. It was the Navy that imposed a 7.5G limit. The plane was rated for 9G, but the Navy had other ideas. The pilot could exceed 7.5G for emergencies only.
Corrosion and metal fatigue takes its toll on an airframe. Salt is very corrosive, and the Navy obviously operates in a salty environment. Catapult launches and arrested recoveries (controlled crashes), in addition to the operational stresses placed upon the aircraft, has historically required special maintenance, repair, and often replacement of stressed areas of structure, to extend the life of the platform.
Penny is the same Penny Benjamin that goose mentioned in the 1st movie when Maverick was being chewed out for high speed passes over 5 air controlled towers and 1 Admirals daughter. That's why when he sees her in her bar she says he pissed off another admiral.

I watched it in theater's and gave away that I used to fly because every time they pulled G's I was going through the same exercises required to stay conscious. Old habits never really do die I guess.
This movie had absolutely no business being as good as it was.

I saw this movie with my aunt and her boyfriend in theatres in 2022 and I cried twice when maverick gets thrown out of the bar and sees Rooster playing on piano, bringing back the memories of Goose playing the piano in the original 1986 Top Gun movie and Iceman’s funeral
Tom Cruise actually got himself in a bit of trouble with the funeral scene. The SEAL community was none too happy with how Maverick hammered his aviator wings into the coffin. That is a naval tradition reserved only for SEALS and no one else.

I’m an airline pilot and I saw the old movie when I was 10 years old now 30 years later it was so great to see the new one pay great tribute to the beautiful f-14 Tomcat. It is the heart and soul of Top Gun and inspired me to do what I do today. No man made object can surpass it. My teenage girls aren’t interested in becoming aviators but they love these movies and I went to a museum to show them the Tomcat and they were amazed.
And didn't you like how Mav did some moves not in the book like the throttle splitting to make that Cat dance? Made me smile.

That one line made this movie go from Spectacular to PICTURE PERFECT!!
Tom Cruise was flying his actual airplane at the end and during the final fight scene. That was also his personal jet. The only CGI used were the missiles and the CGI mesh used to make toms plane look like an F14. During the training missions and the actual mission. They were actually in F18s and Blue angles stunt pilots were flying while the actors sat in the back and it was filmed to look like they were flying but they were still in those jets none the less. Tom wanted to fly an actual F18 but the military wouldnt let him xD.
This film is proof that you can make a sequel just as good or better than the original!! Love this movie!!

Top Gun has the longest running video game series, based on an film ever (1986-2010).
The 18th and final game on PS3 subtitled "Hard Lock" (2010) and the plot is set years after the first film.
Maverick as an instructor to a new generation of pilots and his best student, Lance Webb aka Spider
taking on an elite special mission (predating the movie's own sequel).
But in any event, the years of waiting for TG:M to was so worth the admission.
30:37 - Yes - they actually filmed them inside an airborn supersonic F-18, but with a real fighter-pilot flying. The actors were in the back seat.
The scenes of Bob losing consciousness were real as were the speed and g-force pulling their skin downwards. They were experiencing the real stomach twisting g-forces that fighter-pilots feel.
Good times good times nothing like flying in the F-18 E or F.
With the flight experience that he has, Cruise would be able to fly a F-18 - but only perform basic maneuvers (no supersonic flight, no carrier landings). He did ask if he could take the controls in flight, but the Navy wouldn't let him.
Won't surprise me if he shows up at an airshow with a T-38 one of these days...

Hi Girls, I loved this movie. I thought it was better than the first one. Tom didn't fly the jets but he did fly the Mustang at the end (the propeller aircraft), he's a highly trained pilot but not on jets. I loved how real it was and how they allowed men to have emotions at last.
Heck, he owns that Mustang.

I think this is one of the best movies ever made. It is formulaic, but it hits every mark it aims for. Everything gets paid off. ❤
Mach refers to speed of sound - so Maverick was flying Mach 10 or 10 times speed of sound

Top Gun: Maverick is a masterpiece of a film. I watched it twice at the theaters with my Dad. What makes this film so great is that this movie was made after almost 36 years and this sequel definitely lived up to its expectation as it was so beautifully done with the music, the story, the dialogues, the plane flying sequences, the writing etc. Shoutout to Lady Gaga, Hanz Zimmer and One Republic for doing a fantastic job with the music. Tom Cruise never gets old as he gave another iconic performance as he always does in most of his films. The whole cast was great including Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez, Val Kilmer, Bashir Slahuddin, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Charles Parnell, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis etc. Loved your reactions/analysis, take care, enjoy life, stay healthy and have a great one.

Music, tension, heart...this is one polished movie!
One big change was that they could mount GoPro cameras on the inside & outside of the Super Hornets for terrific shots.
All the actors were shot in the back seat of an F/A-18F to make it look like they were piloting. The Gs were real.
If you go back & watch the scene in the first movie, where they're being chewed out by the CAG, that officer mentioned an admiral's daughter, Patty Benjamin. Surprise!!
Fun Fact: it's TOPGUN, not TOP GUN. Just sayin'.
Maverick didn't become the "fastest man alive." The Shuttle went far faster than Mach 10 on re-entry.
The cameras weren't GoPros. They were 6K Sony Venice IMAX cameras.

so sad to hear that Val Kilmer (Iceman) has throat cancer. Glad they found a way to put him in this movie
He had it, he was given the all clear but the treatment took its toll. He had to have part of his trachea removed, and has a tube in his neck to help him either eat or breathe (I can’t remember which). That’s why he wears a scarf in the scene, it hides the hole in his neck where the tube is located.
Mach is a measure of speed. It represents the speed or sound, so Mach 10 means he is flying 10 times the speed of sound.
G is the force equivalent to gravity, not the speed Maverick was flying in the opening sequence. It's like that ride in the fair where they put you in a loop and you get stuck to the wall, the faster it turns, the heavier you feel tied to the wall of the ride. 10 G is equivalent to 10 times the gravitational force of Earth, so if you weight 70 kg, you will feel like you weight 700 kg. If the weigh of your arm to maintain it around the control lever is 6 kg, it would feel like it weights 60 kg, so it is a battle just to keep your hands on the controls.

Okay, just for the record, Tom Cruise specifically says this movie was meant to be watched on the BIG screen in a theater. The reward is so much much better. With that said, ENJOY! 🎉 ~ Tony

Best screen to see this movie was in a 4DX theater..my wife talked me into and wow, what an experience..I still thank my wife for her suggestion.
To make sure it's clear Iceman's Commander title was a position not the actual navy officer rank. He was in charge of the entire pacific fleet and held the rank of O10 a full 4 star Admiral in the USN. Other 4 star admiral billets include the Atlantic fleet commander the CNO (Chief of Naval Operations and DCNO (Deputy chief of Naval operations). Cyclone is playing the role of the CNAF (chief of naval air forces) which is actually stationed at North Island it is a Vice Admiral billet (3 star/O9). The CNAF is in charge of anything and everything USN that flies.
The current real CNAF VADM. Whitesell earned his wings of gold way back in October of 1986.
The year the original Top Gun was released? How about that.

They made the CNAF position dual-hatted with Commander Naval Air Force Pacific. Which made me thought, why not make Commander PF dual-hatted with Commander INDOPAC, since the latter has always been held by a Navy Admiral and will probably be for the distant future as well.
@@dallasyap3064 The CNAF and the Pacific commander are 2 different 3 star Vice admirals. The current CNAF is VADM Whitesell while the current Pacific fleet air commander is VADM Daniel Cheever.
Both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets are commanded by 1 of the few 4 star admirals the USN has while other fleets are under the command of a 1 to 3 star admiral.
@@CDRhammond Though Commander Naval Air Forces and Commander Naval Air Force Pacific are different positions, they're held by the same officer. VADM Daniel Cheever is the incumbent COMNAVAIRPAC & COMNAVAIR, VADM Whitesell has retired. I just personally thought that it was a little different to put the arrangements like that. And that's also what made me thought to perhaps designate the Commander US Pacific Fleet as dual-hatted Commander Indopacific Command.
Penny was mentioned in the first. The girst general was in Apollo 13 and the amazing jet flight and first astronaut movie, the right stuff! Bob, is a pilot, his real dad is Bill Pullman, the pilot and president in Independence Day!😮😮😮. Tom convinced hangman to get his pilots license, he did! And starred in a true story movie about 2 pilots in the Korean war! Tom has multiple licences, including his pilots licence ..the plane at the end, is his!😮😮😮
Iceman couldn't talk, he really has throat cancer. Tom had his movie voice done by AI. Rooster really learned to play the piano, for this movie. The actors flew for 90 days, and got jet fuel suckness, and had to control all their own onboard gear. Mics, cams, gear they were wearing, everything!
this sequel was a huge respect to the first top gun. tom really knows how to bring the big game :))! I cried too

The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been if he had been flying one of the typical single-seat fighters instead of the two-seat F-14s used in the original Top Gun. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too.
In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that.
In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying.
The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to prepare them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time.
The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast.
Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie.
Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit.
In a Hollyweird full of shallow and dull movies and shows with shallow, poorly done scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow, unrealistic characters who only change in shallow ways if at all, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

Really good sequel and a great reaction by Lia and Viki. Val Kilmer "Iceman" has a very interesting documentary about his life and acting career. I highly recommend it. He is really fighting serious physical problems in real life. The girls commented how tall Miles Teller "Rooster" is, but he was standing next to Tom Cruise at the time. Tom is not a tall guy. He is about 5'7". Both girls are taller than him For more Miles Teller, I suggest watching Whiplash and War Dogs.

My two favorite lines: Earth, and Nice.
After their successful drop, one of my favorite moments of the entire movie was the tense, close to the mountain climb, followed by the brief moment of serenity after cresting the mountain, then immediate chaos of comms chatter as the pilots do their best to avoid SAM missiles.

Its the story of the first, all women’s sailing crew who, in 1989 competed in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
33,000 miles/53,108 km’s and lasts 9 months.
Might even get a tear or two from the iron-tough girls, Lia and Michelle - maybe.
Gonna need a box of tissue for Vik and El.
Bulgaria is 520 km long so would take 2.526 minutes to fly across it at Mach 10 (that is of course counting the speed of sound at sea level)
I have the same jacket as Maverick 😂 I wore it to the premier of this movie. Top Gun got me interested in motorcycles and flying, started flying at 16, nearly crashed into a mountain at 22. Life is good
I watched this on the plane on my phone and I still adored it. I was in tears, the whole ending ever since “I’m sorry goose.” I screamed on the plane… That’s how you make a sequel!
25:20 he never wanted Maverick to train the pilots. It was supposed to be a suicide mission but IceMan knew that Maverick could teach them to survive the mission so he used his weight to bring Maverick in. After Ice died Cyclone took control and was able to dump Maverick to run the mission his way. He ended up after Maverick showed it could be done Cyclone figured sending him on the mission would be a good way to get rid of him. The actors did go up in actual two seater jets to film them “flying”. 36:22 Rooster wasn’t out of ammo he was out of flares for a defensive measure.
Cyclone was never trying to get rid of Maverick or lose any of the team, he could easily have had Maverick court marshalled (as he said), but instead knew the mission had more chance of success and survivability with Maverick leading than without him. He was definitely more concerned with the success of the mission and knew there was a cost, but that’s why he holds a 3-star Admiral rank, the mission comes first and that’s his priority. The reason he looked to change the mission was because they were failing to do it the way they were being taught by Maverick, and he had to make sure that they could at least complete the mission. Returning safely would then be down to the skill of the pilots. At the end of the day, mission success was always more important than all 4 F-18s and their crews, failure allows the enemy to make nuclear grade weapons which could cost millions of lives. It wasn’t a “suicide mission”, it was a high risk mission, but the risk was 4 planes (and 6 crew members) vs millions of lives around the world.
The airplane at the end is Tom Cruise's personal aircraft. It is a restored and functional P-51 from the WW2 times. Cruise loaned it to the movie producers for this show. It may even be Cruise that was flying it, but if I was the insurance underwriter I would be having kittens over it.

The skunk next to the tail number on the experimental airplane is an actual insignia from Lockheed Martin. Given the pseudonym “Skunkworks”, it was a special secret project division.

Enjoyed both your reactions, especially Vicki whom I agree with that it's a rollercoaster of emotions; including Vicki's hilarious emotions to some of them (like when Rooster got shot down and when the F-14 was about to be blown away) "first it's fine, then nervous, then it's not fine, then it's fine again and somehow there's a screw up again lol! By the way mach is a speed unit (speed of sound), mach 1 = 1x the speed of sound, so mach 10 = 10x the speed of sound which is about 12,348km/h.
There's a theory that everything after the Mach-10 ejection was a prolonged NDE. An actual American fighter pilot reviewed this movie (saying it looks good, but heres what would REALLY happen if that occured in reality), and said that ejecting at Mach-10 would shatter your spine, if not outright kill you. It goes through Mavericks life reconciling his missed opportunities/mishandled moments.
His arriving at the bar wondering where he is, is him just starting the slow transition into the afterlife.
His coming back to TG is his chance to come to peace with washing out (him having the right decisions and resolutions despite the militarys mindset) his meeting Penny is him dealing with his missed chance with Penny originally and realizing she is the love of his life(he cements this when he says he is never leaving her again).
Phoenix's training accident is him putting what he learned from the accident that claimed Goose into action and learned that he wont be able to save the aircraft every time something goes wrong. Sometimes you can, but more often than not, you can't.
The mission he will eventually lead is his final test of everything he has learned, and even facing death directly with the Su-57 getting a brief lock on him. His accepting it and knowing he did all he could allow the enemy to be "killed" and him to get his farewell party (the celebration on the carrier). And the ending is him waiting to see what's next, and Penny coming is to take him to the hereafter and then flying towards the sun is Mav finally moving on to the afterlife.

It's crazy, when you know that the actors filmed the scenes of Flight in a Plane in real life. And Tom Cruise is a pilot... we can see that they have suffered with the G's
when we first about cruise doing this sequel, we where kidding about whether he is doing the fhlight scenes all be himself. And he did. And all the other actors, too. This move has everything a good movie needs.

One of the few action movies to give away where the "enemy" is. Only two countries ever had the F-14, and the US had retired theirs before this movie. Irsn still has between 6 and 12 of 79 they bought from Grumman back in the 1970s when they were ruled by the Shah and very friendly with the US. And Iran has experimented with nuclear material and equipment.
One of the best sequel’s ever. And it only took 30 years to make.

Viki really is effected by these movies. Just remember it's only a movie. Goose died but Anthony Edwards went on to star in ER. Btw, Glen Powell, who played Hangman in this movie, will be in Twisters which is going to be released this summer. I read it will be a sequel to Twister and not a remake.

Maverick actually did Rooster a favor. He had to attend a regular civilian college for 4 years instead of going through the academy for 4 years. It would have cost him an extra 13 weeks to get through OCS in order to become an officer, but he would have had a much easier time in any civilian college compared to that hell that is Annapolis.

Great movie minus three issues, penny chosen makes her less than 10 when mav. first was with her. 2nd noone with those glasses would be allowed to fly any aircraft in the millitary. 3rd I can forgive do to lack of 2 seaters, but as a navy pilot a p51 mustang would not be his choice to restore as it was a Army/Airforce only plane. A hellcat or corsair flown by the navy and marines would be a better choice. Navy did not buy 2 seat trainers though a few corsair trainers were made.
I was a USN aviator and I love the P-51. If I had the chance I'd defiantly jump on owning one.
