I've been following the DMC since 1986 (I still have the top 3 sets on tape from when I recorded them off the radio back then, lol) and I really don't get the hate for this routine. The audio isn't that great, admittedly, but I think this routine is excellent. There's lots of variation in technique, including making interesting use of DVS (but without overdoing it), and the music selection was pretty varied too. I'm not convinced that the main 6 minute comp would be better if it went back to being vinyl only. It would be interesting to see what happened if they tried it, just to see who entered and how the routines turned out, but I suspect that it would just lead to fewer people entering. My only issue with DVS is when too much editing/production is used, as it can make things sound more complex than they are. I would imagine it's pretty hard being a judge, only getting to see/hear each routine once and trying to take in everything that's going on, and that's made even harder when tracks are edited. That was happening before DVS was allowed anyway, as DJs were using custom records before that.
Just seems all recent routines are about how fast.and jerky to make the music. Haven't felt any smoth flow since craze. Or maybe imerge (first winning routine)

To the DMC bashers and know-it-all bellyachers: The BATTLE is about vinyl. The ONLINE DJ CHAMPIONSHIP is about ANYTHING. The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP is decided and judged by World Champions. The DJs decide where they wish to take their art not DMC! Apologise for the audio, we tried to bring the audience in for atmosphere, it didn't work too well but we had major sound problems with the venue desk and I can't tell you how busy everyone is during the finals and we can't find anyone to hang! Our apologise but I thought the live sound was acceptable and not a total disaster. You should show some love to Mr.Switch, he entered his first dmc regional when he was 11, there is no one more dedicated and although traditionalists yearn for sets with Al naafiysh, it's a bit like me wanting to hear Elvis Jailhouse Rock rather than Jeezy ft.Kendrick Lamar 'Holy Ghost'!!!!! DJs are big boys (and girls), they get on stage and perform in front of people. When you do that you are open to criticism. Someone can offer their opinion and criticism without being a world champion DJ and it can be legit observations. DJs have this absurd response to criticism way too often that if you can't beat someone in a battle somehow you aren't allowed to be critical of them. It makes literally no sense. The fact is that for the first 1/5 of the set he did a bunch of offbeat juggles that did not flow. Most of the Run DMC routine was not on beat and didn't come together or pop. There were great little details he was doing but it did not come together. The transitions were forced and not clever. These are tangible aspects of the set not wishy-washy emotional arguments. This is fair criticism. Not everyone has to love everything an they are entitled to share their opinion. Don't like it then don't read it.
Rottenfusion forget what DMC is trying to push on ya. This wasn't very good. Others from same contest had clearer. This was about "how fast can I be for 6 minutes". Nothing more.
DMC World if i may add my two pence worth....i'd like to say that whatever the format it still comes down to the skill of the dj! i started djaying on vinyl and won three DMC london championships back in the 90's (you'll probably remember me tony)! and to be honest the only reason why vinyl would harder is because you physically have to place the needle to your cue points, and control the unpredicted needle skips etc! With vinyl you got be creative, and you've got to work to make a routine neat & tidy! so in my humble opinion, to judge the worth of any so called 'turntablist' i would say put them or judge them on vinyl...that would be the true test of any of these djs now! that being said i think serato and traktor are great tools to use!!! personally speaking i now use traktor for the small and rare performances i give! and i love how creative you can be using digital vinyl! i can pre-edit tunes and work the tune to how i want it to sound! so there is a level of skill involved here, and yes it might be easier to do a lot of things, which is why (again my own opinion) the dj has to seriously raise his game to be extra creative than any so called DMC champion before him/her! which brings me to my 'beef' (as it were)! Having watched switch's performance i found it way too messy, loose and untidy! now thats not hating because as i said its not the format its the skill of the dj! when i watch these so called "champions" i cant believe how messy some of them sound! in my head im thinking just slow that down and make it audible and funky for the audience! or if your going to do anything at speed practice practice practice! 100 times if need be till you get it right! dont come with something half baked expecting people to "get it" or respond warmly! all being said switch ain't a bad dj he just needs to tidy his routines up! he's got good ideas but needs to put them together properly! and in all fairness the judges who are judging have to judge these competitions on "the best of a bad/poor lot" (I think this is why I've never been asked to come back and judge any DMC competition) im probably too controversial to have as a judge!!!! my final word is this...make the dj raise the level of his game according to the format he is using...if someone using using vinyl sounds cleaner and tidier than someone using digital then give them decision! and dont give so called "champions" extra props just because they won a competition as anyone can have a bad day at the office!!! anyways thats me done! oh and do please check out my turntablist show every saturday on www.back2backfm.net 8pm till 10pm bst 3pm-till 5pm in the usa (the saturday nite zulu nation block party) thanks guys! peace

man i just saw the 2001 dj klever routine and it's crazy how listening to those routines from 95-2002 to listening to these are cringing. these newer battles are horrible and sounds like noise. the only positive thing i can say is good job they can use serato because they can just put it on rel mode and don't have to worry about your vinyl skipping or putting stickers on your vinyl, or having stacks of vinyl on the sides and changing them. now that i think about it...damn never mind this new age battling sucks

(Speaking just for myself - and not for all of good folks who run DMC.... ) - I hope I express myself well but if my word choice has been confusing or poorly selected - please feel free to ask me open ended questions instead of trolling. Thank you in advance. Because they are so inaccurate and uninformed about what they are writing, I feel embarrassed for the people who troll DJ battles without having followed them, knowing the rules of the particular battles or the history of who won. Those who are battle DJs or turntablists and who have informed opinions are not included in this. They complain that things should go back to vinyl only - but fail to realize that for well over a decade, DMC has had a head to head vinyl only battle. Sometimes the (head to head) DMC Battle for Supremacy is more exciting than the classic showcase battle. In fact a US DJ - Christian Iftw Chacon - just won the 2014 Battle for World Supremacy! The present DMC World Champion Mr Switch - World DJ Champion - has won the ALL Vinyl head to head category - at the World level - 3X already so I am sure he is more than experienced with vinyl - and for his 4th World title - if he wants to use Scratch Live - I would say he has earned the right! Going back to "all vinyl" in the classic showcase style 6 min. category is not going to alleviate what you are really complaining about because it's not going to change the DJs freedom of choice when it comes to selection. You may have missed the (insider) fact that the battle DJs were pressing up their own custom vinyl for the competition - because they weren't allowed to use Scratch Live and in many cases, they could not get the songs, sounds or the disses they wanted on vinyl. Many of purists had complained that even battle breaks were cheating WAY before DVS was permitted. Also - before DVS was allowed in the classic battle LESS DJs were entering - at least in the US. Since it has been permitted - some of the best battle DJs in the USA have come back to the battle! Chris Karns (formerly known as Vajra) won the 2011 DMC World Finals DJ Precision is the 2012 DMC World Vice Champ (runner up) Isaac DeLima aka DJ I-Dee is the 2014 DMC World Vice Champ (runner up) and the 2014 DMC World Online Champion! Who do you think would enter if it stayed all vinyl? Even in the US - very few DJs battled this year in the showcase battle - using all vinyl. And if I can paraphrase DJ Precision of the X-ecutioners correctly - he said something to the degree of - it's great that you are using all vinyl but what are you doing different to progress it and make it different from the 90s? And since DVS was allowed, we have seen more and more new faces entering the DMC US regionals - including a handful of teens 13-19. These are youth who did not grow up with the abundance of record stores that we enjoyed as teens! God willing, their presence will encourage more and more DJs to enter - and bring even more vitality and excitement into the battle scene! With 2 DMC World titles under our belt for 2014 (IFTW = DMC World Supremacy and I-Dee = DMC World Online) I think the US battle scene will be more exciting than ever in 2015!!! You can't expect every DJ in the DMC World Finals to include selections that you like - but at the end of the day, Funky or Hip Hop or not - the judges have to pick from who was actually IN the battle (and not are they better than Cash Money, Raida (RIP) or Qbert). If you were a judge, you would have to consider a lot of things in tallying up your top 3 - you can't simply vote on just selection or just showmanship or just audience response. A lot has to be considered. In closing, please remember that DMC DJ Battles did not originally start off as Hip Hop DJ battles - but Tony Prince allowed them to go that route when our dear friend Dee Jay Cheese went in with a true school Hip Hop routine. In that same line of thinking - DMC is going to let the battles progress to wherever they go. I like them to stay Hip Hop DJ battles too - but I respect the vision and open mindedness that Tony Prince has toward not telling the DJs what to play. I think he is 100% down for ride and I am definitely curious to see where it will go too! The main event is allowing the DJ to embrace modern methods and DMC is devoted to freedom of choice which is reflected in the ONLINE DJ CHAMPIONSHIPS where absolutely anything is permitted. It is the DJ population who make these creative decisions not DMC. You'll notice we haven't done any party rockin' competition like certain other event promoters who are known to block critical comments. ***** Steve, that my friend is the way to discuss matters, thank you. First of all let me say, unless you were in The Forum two weeks ago, you have only seen the winning performance so far. The best moments in the competition are when the DJ pulls something out of the bag that raises the roof at the Finals (or any event for that matter). The standards were so high in the Eliminations this year that we put 10 through instead of 8. An audience down with the art is one who makes a noise when they see something special and our audience can always be relied on to create an influence amongst the judges This year there was a lot of noise. The point I'm offering to you is who do we listen to, the vast majority who believe the main event now requires years of dedication and practicing and social sacrifice to win, or those who want this amazing art to step back and be what it was? Why then, when they are totally capable of offering a vinyl-only performance, do we not see more entering the DMC ONLINE CHAMPIONSHIPS with retro entries? That, once again, is not DMC's doing, it's the DJs who decide what they want to do and established judges who appoint the winners in each round and final. OK, I hear those who prefer the old school vinyl-only format but they're deaf to our constant reminder that THEIR favourite format lies in the Battle For World Supremacy. They want their passion reflected in ALL the events and the only people who can make that happen are the competitors. Whilst it was DJ demand that brought us to the present level of art with computer and pre-prepared records, we have never said NOT to use original vinyl in their sets. That is a major point, we allow certain things to create a level playing field but we have never - never disallowed anything. My message to those complainers is, (I assume they are turntablists who know their way around the decks and not just bellyachers?) put a vinyl only set together for next year's ONLINE CHAMPIONSHIP. If they win they can not only inspire a trend-reversal, they can then bring it to the World Championships. Lastly, whilst I love everything that's going down with so many skills, my favourite event is the Battle. I enjoy the tactics as much as anything else. Here's a guy who has prepared a number of attacks. In the first minute he's met a king who floors him, he then pulls out a set he wanted to use in the later stages just to survive the early heat, or else he's out altogether! Then he's weakened for his later plans. There has never been a set of more qualified judges than at the 2014 Finals. Someone, I won't say who, even suggested we allow controllers into the Battle! I shudder at the thought. We protect purist turntablism right there! But it is definitely these discussions and opinions that will influence the future and we welcome all comments so long as they aren't filled with bile. I personally step back as people on the front-line as event organisers like Sally, Christie, Wilfrid, people who nurture the events, make their recommendations. As you know, Christie-Z staged a one-off Scratch battle in the USA this year but everyone has to understand that these events have to be paid for and commercial sponsorship as in the old Technics days, is no longer easy to come by. Neither is vinyl. Perhaps Pioneer DJ's new turntable will change the goal posts, we are in discussions with them. Hallelujah. TP.
Respect to Roc Raider - classic competitor - but he really does (did) have a lot to answer for... When HE did all the hand gestures and facial expressions, he had charisma. It worked. But everyone copied him, and now all these dweebs think they have to do it is as well - pointing at the records and miming when a bit of dialogue plays, giving it the rap-hands etc. It looks like a bunch of guys in a comic shop shooting a home-made rap video. It's fucking cringeworthy.
Whatever opinion follows, there is no denying that lad has skill. Times change and technology should be embraced one way or another.. I am old.... Old enough to have seen DJ cheese at the famous hacienda club here in manchester and then our very own chad jackson.. Then i drifted from hiphop, into techno music.. And then dj'ing was a different animal, but no less talented.. Mmmmm, i entered Dmc uk finals about 86, when it was a mixing competition, came runner up to chad jackson in regionals. i find this a bit of a row tbh.....close your eyes and listen to it...
If you want to hear how a true glitchy competition set done right that actually has a fucking beat to it. search for Dj Kentaro's 2001 final set at DMC 2001. That fool didn't use any sample at all. He just used a a long guitar sound and the freaking vinyl labels making static sound as his sample using sound pitching to perfection. Made music to everyone's ears while killing it with his insane skills and beat juggling. Kentaro didn't use any custom vinyls for samples or sound jumbled up like this set with too much dubstep songs.
Face it, without the DMC's the art of turntablism would not have progressed as fast as it did. We all watched the Videos, we all waited eagerly for the next video to come out and were all inspired by the Champions and runners up. DMC helped provide a platform for DJs to show their skills express their ideas and creativity and gave DJs a chance to see what other DJs around the world were doing. The ITF later on also furthered the movement and others but DMC started the ball rolling and now we have tons of amazing DJs in the world that have learned from the greats of the past like Qbert, Craze, Atrack, Cash Money etc... The online championships is one thing, but there is a huge difference when nerves get rattled stepping on stage to perform a battle routine in front of an actual audience. We all are comfortable playing at home... when you have to do it in front of people and get it right the first time it takes nerves of steel to hop on the wheels of steel at that point.
it honestly sounds like he's just fucking around on the tables. there are parts that are sick, but the transition is just him throwing crossfader around and scratching the decks. can someone explain to me how they grade the different djs?
I don't know why I can't get inspired by this video, DMC is known for Hip Hop, this is a guy making crazy moves with turntables, we're your clients please MAKE IT FUNKY!! we're getting inspiration by the old djs by their fanpages, but they just need to dedicate themselves for being legends, inspire us to buy vinyl and feel the groove, your sponsors and kids are going to see that DMC is the legend not sponsors and mp3 industry being legends, I suppose DJ SWITCH prefer that routine in vinyl and he could make it if you didn't accept mp3, you know hip hop isn't just music :)
I get ya. The best sets are those that include all the techniques but keep it always within a package that flows and sounds clean & good. I love turntablism, but many sets make even me want to fast forward when they’ve forgotten about what it actually SOUNDS like
I miss the needle dropping and switching vinyl during the set. That was part of the skill to be a turntablist. No computer lining everything up perfectly with bpms and samples ready to go. Yawn!Analog son! Theyll be battling on iphones soon.. Rip roc raida - turntablism died with him.

Dj battles started to suck when dmc started to allow laptops and serrato scratch with pre made custom samples and beats be in the competition. DMC should ban this stuff and take it back to the true techniques of a Dj battle 2 turntables a mixer your skills and vynil records. Dj battles now sound like EDF music now!

I have to agree with You. Technically this guy is a beast,but musically it get's redundant after the first two routines. Maybe this what the crowd wants nowadays? Everyone's so fast and technical. I miss the head nodding juggles.

Really? DMC has gone down hill since the late 90s - early 2000s. Not saying he's shit but there's shit loads of routines from them times which are a million times better than this. There was hardly any scratching. Just pretty much 6 minutes of aggressive and repetitive beat juggling. I would hate to see what the other routines from this event were like.
I totally agree.software dj s suck.....vinylists do it better.Noize s routine in 96 had more skill & relevance then this routine.If I wanted to see software dj s battle...id watch a REDBULL event.
ill atit More skill? You're definitely stuck in the past, dude. This routine had tons of skill, and musicality. Noize's '96 routine is great because it's clever and clean. It's one of my favorite sets but saying that one was more technical than this, just proves you go along with the 'laptop DJs suck' circlejerk. This routine had just an equal amount of cuts as juggles too. I challenge you to find a routine done with vinyl that is harder to pull off than this.

Nice routine, but I think some of the cuts weren't tight enough. Seems to be a thing with new skool turntablists. Don't get me wrong, dude still has some serious skillz tho! :)
In my opinion the DJ's can use software if they wish, but only play actual songs. Its almost impossible to tell what is the DJ's skill and what is pre-recorded. Back in the day the point of juggling and scratching was to enhance the music, not make noise for the sake of it. I think creative musicality and keeping in time should be rewarded, not speed and aggression at the expense of the flow.

I always have to wonder how good these guys are if you took their laptops away. I remember when turntablism used to be the purest form of hip hop out there. Those days have definitely passed and I'm not so sure we can even call this turntablism anymore.

I'm not convinced that the main 6 minute comp would be better if it went back to being vinyl only. It would be interesting to see what happened if they tried it, just to see who entered and how the routines turned out, but I suspect that it would just lead to fewer people entering.
My only issue with DVS is when too much editing/production is used, as it can make things sound more complex than they are. I would imagine it's pretty hard being a judge, only getting to see/hear each routine once and trying to take in everything that's going on, and that's made even harder when tracks are edited. That was happening before DVS was allowed anyway, as DJs were using custom records before that.

Apologise for the audio, we tried to bring the audience in for atmosphere, it didn't work too well but we had major sound problems with the venue desk and I can't tell you how busy everyone is during the finals and we can't find anyone to hang!

DJs are big boys (and girls), they get on stage and perform in front of people. When you do that you are open to criticism. Someone can offer their opinion and criticism without being a world champion DJ and it can be legit observations. DJs have this absurd response to criticism way too often that if you can't beat someone in a battle somehow you aren't allowed to be critical of them. It makes literally no sense.
The fact is that for the first 1/5 of the set he did a bunch of offbeat juggles that did not flow. Most of the Run DMC routine was not on beat and didn't come together or pop. There were great little details he was doing but it did not come together. The transitions were forced and not clever. These are tangible aspects of the set not wishy-washy emotional arguments. This is fair criticism.
Not everyone has to love everything an they are entitled to share their opinion. Don't like it then don't read it.

DMC World if i may add my two pence worth....i'd like to say that whatever the format it still comes down to the skill of the dj! i started djaying on vinyl and won three DMC london championships back in the 90's (you'll probably remember me tony)! and to be honest the only reason why vinyl would harder is because you physically have to place the needle to your cue points, and control the unpredicted needle skips etc! With vinyl you got be creative, and you've got to work to make a routine neat & tidy! so in my humble opinion, to judge the worth of any so called 'turntablist' i would say put them or judge them on vinyl...that would be the true test of any of these djs now! that being said i think serato and traktor are great tools to use!!! personally speaking i now use traktor for the small and rare performances i give! and i love how creative you can be using digital vinyl! i can pre-edit tunes and work the tune to how i want it to sound! so there is a level of skill involved here, and yes it might be easier to do a lot of things, which is why (again my own opinion) the dj has to seriously raise his game to be extra creative than any so called DMC champion before him/her! which brings me to my 'beef' (as it were)! Having watched switch's performance i found it way too messy, loose and untidy! now thats not hating because as i said its not the format its the skill of the dj! when i watch these so called "champions" i cant believe how messy some of them sound! in my head im thinking just slow that down and make it audible and funky for the audience! or if your going to do anything at speed practice practice practice! 100 times if need be till you get it right! dont come with something half baked expecting people to "get it" or respond warmly! all being said switch ain't a bad dj he just needs to tidy his routines up! he's got good ideas but needs to put them together properly! and in all fairness the judges who are judging have to judge these competitions on "the best of a bad/poor lot" (I think this is why I've never been asked to come back and judge any DMC competition) im probably too controversial to have as a judge!!!! my final word is this...make the dj raise the level of his game according to the format he is using...if someone using using vinyl sounds cleaner and tidier than someone using digital then give them decision! and dont give so called "champions" extra props just because they won a competition as anyone can have a bad day at the office!!! anyways thats me done! oh and do please check out my turntablist show every saturday on www.back2backfm.net 8pm till 10pm bst 3pm-till 5pm in the usa (the saturday nite zulu nation block party) thanks guys! peace

man i just saw the 2001 dj klever routine and it's crazy how listening to those routines from 95-2002 to listening to these are cringing. these newer battles are horrible and sounds like noise. the only positive thing i can say is good job they can use serato because they can just put it on rel mode and don't have to worry about your vinyl skipping or putting stickers on your vinyl, or having stacks of vinyl on the sides and changing them. now that i think about it...damn never mind this new age battling sucks

Peace! (Speaking just for myself - and not for all of good folks who run DMC.... ) - I hope I express myself well but if my word choice has been confusing or poorly selected - please feel free to ask me open ended questions instead of trolling. Thank you in advance.
Because they are so inaccurate and uninformed about what they are writing, I feel embarrassed for the people who troll DJ battles without having followed them, knowing the rules of the particular battles or the history of who won. Those who are battle DJs or turntablists and who have informed opinions are not included in this.
They complain that things should go back to vinyl only - but fail to realize that for well over a decade, DMC has had a head to head vinyl only battle. Sometimes the (head to head) DMC Battle for Supremacy is more exciting than the classic showcase battle. In fact a US DJ - Christian Iftw Chacon - just won the 2014 Battle for World Supremacy! The present DMC World Champion Mr Switch - World DJ Champion - has won the ALL Vinyl head to head category - at the World level - 3X already so I am sure he is more than experienced with vinyl - and for his 4th World title - if he wants to use Scratch Live - I would say he has earned the right!
Going back to "all vinyl" in the classic showcase style 6 min. category is not going to alleviate what you are really complaining about because it's not going to change the DJs freedom of choice when it comes to selection. You may have missed the (insider) fact that the battle DJs were pressing up their own custom vinyl for the competition - because they weren't allowed to use Scratch Live and in many cases, they could not get the songs, sounds or the disses they wanted on vinyl. Many of purists had complained that even battle breaks were cheating WAY before DVS was permitted.
Also - before DVS was allowed in the classic battle LESS DJs were entering - at least in the US. Since it has been permitted - some of the best battle DJs in the USA have come back to the battle!

Who do you think would enter if it stayed all vinyl? Even in the US - very few DJs battled this year in the showcase battle - using all vinyl. And if I can paraphrase DJ Precision of the X-ecutioners correctly - he said something to the degree of - it's great that you are using all vinyl but what are you doing different to progress it and make it different from the 90s?
And since DVS was allowed, we have seen more and more new faces entering the DMC US regionals - including a handful of teens 13-19. These are youth who did not grow up with the abundance of record stores that we enjoyed as teens! God willing, their presence will encourage more and more DJs to enter - and bring even more vitality and excitement into the battle scene! With 2 DMC World titles under our belt for 2014 (IFTW = DMC World Supremacy and I-Dee = DMC World Online) I think the US battle scene will be more exciting than ever in 2015!!!
You can't expect every DJ in the DMC World Finals to include selections that you like - but at the end of the day, Funky or Hip Hop or not - the judges have to pick from who was actually IN the battle (and not are they better than Cash Money, Raida (RIP) or Qbert). If you were a judge, you would have to consider a lot of things in tallying up your top 3 - you can't simply vote on just selection or just showmanship or just audience response. A lot has to be considered.
In closing, please remember that DMC DJ Battles did not originally start off as Hip Hop DJ battles - but Tony Prince allowed them to go that route when our dear friend Dee Jay Cheese went in with a true school Hip Hop routine. In that same line of thinking - DMC is going to let the battles progress to wherever they go. I like them to stay Hip Hop DJ battles too - but I respect the vision and open mindedness that Tony Prince has toward not telling the DJs what to play. I think he is 100% down for ride and I am definitely curious to see where it will go too!

***** Steve, that my friend is the way to discuss matters, thank you. First of all let me say, unless you were in The Forum two weeks ago, you have only seen the winning performance so far. The best moments in the competition are when the DJ pulls something out of the bag that raises the roof at the Finals (or any event for that matter). The standards were so high in the Eliminations this year that we put 10 through instead of 8. An audience down with the art is one who makes a noise when they see something special and our audience can always be relied on to create an influence amongst the judges
This year there was a lot of noise.
The point I'm offering to you is who do we listen to, the vast majority who believe the main event now requires years of dedication and practicing and social sacrifice to win, or those who want this amazing art to step back and be what it was? Why then, when they are totally capable of offering a vinyl-only performance, do we not see more entering the DMC ONLINE CHAMPIONSHIPS with retro entries? That, once again, is not DMC's doing, it's the DJs who decide what they want to do and established judges who appoint the winners in each round and final.
OK, I hear those who prefer the old school vinyl-only format but they're deaf to our constant reminder that THEIR favourite format lies in the Battle For World Supremacy. They want their passion reflected in ALL the events and the only people who can make that happen are the competitors. Whilst it was DJ demand that brought us to the present level of art with computer and pre-prepared records, we have never said NOT to use original vinyl in their sets. That is a major point, we allow certain things to create a level playing field but we have never - never disallowed anything. My message to those complainers is, (I assume they are turntablists who know their way around the decks and not just bellyachers?) put a vinyl only set together for next year's ONLINE CHAMPIONSHIP. If they win they can not only inspire a trend-reversal, they can then bring it to the World Championships.
Lastly, whilst I love everything that's going down with so many skills, my favourite event is the Battle. I enjoy the tactics as much as anything else. Here's a guy who has prepared a number of attacks. In the first minute he's met a king who floors him, he then pulls out a set he wanted to use in the later stages just to survive the early heat, or else he's out altogether! Then he's weakened for his later plans. There has never been a set of more qualified judges than at the 2014 Finals. Someone, I won't say who, even suggested we allow controllers into the Battle! I shudder at the thought. We protect purist turntablism right there!
But it is definitely these discussions and opinions that will influence the future and we welcome all comments so long as they aren't filled with bile. I personally step back as people on the front-line as event organisers like Sally, Christie, Wilfrid, people who nurture the events, make their recommendations.
As you know, Christie-Z staged a one-off Scratch battle in the USA this year but everyone has to understand that these events have to be paid for and commercial sponsorship as in the old Technics days, is no longer easy to come by. Neither is vinyl. Perhaps Pioneer DJ's new turntable will change the goal posts, we are in discussions with them.

Respect to Roc Raider - classic competitor - but he really does (did) have a lot to answer for... When HE did all the hand gestures and facial expressions, he had charisma. It worked. But everyone copied him, and now all these dweebs think they have to do it is as well - pointing at the records and miming when a bit of dialogue plays, giving it the rap-hands etc. It looks like a bunch of guys in a comic shop shooting a home-made rap video. It's fucking cringeworthy.

If you want to hear how a true glitchy competition set done right that actually has a fucking beat to it. search for Dj Kentaro's 2001 final set at DMC 2001. That fool didn't use any sample at all. He just used a a long guitar sound and the freaking vinyl labels making static sound as his sample using sound pitching to perfection. Made music to everyone's ears while killing it with his insane skills and beat juggling. Kentaro didn't use any custom vinyls for samples or sound jumbled up like this set with too much dubstep songs.
Face it, without the DMC's the art of turntablism would not have progressed as fast as it did. We all watched the Videos, we all waited eagerly for the next video to come out and were all inspired by the Champions and runners up. DMC helped provide a platform for DJs to show their skills express their ideas and creativity and gave DJs a chance to see what other DJs around the world were doing. The ITF later on also furthered the movement and others but DMC started the ball rolling and now we have tons of amazing DJs in the world that have learned from the greats of the past like Qbert, Craze, Atrack, Cash Money etc... The online championships is one thing, but there is a huge difference when nerves get rattled stepping on stage to perform a battle routine in front of an actual audience. We all are comfortable playing at home... when you have to do it in front of people and get it right the first time it takes nerves of steel to hop on the wheels of steel at that point.

Dj battles started to suck when dmc started to allow laptops and serrato scratch with pre made custom samples and beats be in the competition. DMC should ban this stuff and take it back to the true techniques of a Dj battle 2 turntables a mixer your skills and vynil records. Dj battles now sound like EDF music now!

Really? DMC has gone down hill since the late 90s - early 2000s. Not saying he's shit but there's shit loads of routines from them times which are a million times better than this. There was hardly any scratching. Just pretty much 6 minutes of aggressive and repetitive beat juggling. I would hate to see what the other routines from this event were like.
I totally agree.software dj s suck.....vinylists do it better.Noize s routine in 96 had more skill & relevance then this routine.If I wanted to see software dj s battle...id watch a REDBULL event.
ill atit More skill? You're definitely stuck in the past, dude. This routine had tons of skill, and musicality. Noize's '96 routine is great because it's clever and clean. It's one of my favorite sets but saying that one was more technical than this, just proves you go along with the 'laptop DJs suck' circlejerk. This routine had just an equal amount of cuts as juggles too. I challenge you to find a routine done with vinyl that is harder to pull off than this.

Nice routine, but I think some of the cuts weren't tight enough. Seems to be a thing with new skool turntablists. Don't get me wrong, dude still has some serious skillz tho! :)

In my opinion the DJ's can use software if they wish, but only play actual songs. Its almost impossible to tell what is the DJ's skill and what is pre-recorded. Back in the day the point of juggling and scratching was to enhance the music, not make noise for the sake of it. I think creative musicality and keeping in time should be rewarded, not speed and aggression at the expense of the flow.

i wont talk about skill.All i can say is that it sadly doesnt sound that great..Especially if you put that routine beside Dj kentaro's 2004 routine...Dmc is starting to become something like dubstep turntablism and its starting to forget that skill isnt that much great if it doesnt combine good flow and sound,,Peace
I always have to wonder how good these guys are if you took their laptops away. I remember when turntablism used to be the purest form of hip hop out there. Those days have definitely passed and I'm not so sure we can even call this turntablism anymore.
