The tote bag is really cute. I have dyed with plants and had the same result. The fabric comes out pretty light With the exception of turmeric if you dye fabric with turmeric, it does come out bright yellow, and it will even over dye fabric that has a pattern. I’ve dyed with avocado pits and skins, and it came out a very soft, but very pretty pink color. Onion skins will also, give you a nice color. But you need a lot of them and I soak my fabric in a vinegar water bath first This past week I dyed up seven skeins of sock yarn that I just didn’t like the colours so I over dyed them with RIT dye in a dark brown and they turned out beautiful I soaked them in a vinegar water bath first as well, and they were just solid and gorgeous and I was so pleased it covered over all of that color. The yarn was turquoise and gray and purple and green with a little bit of navy and I got full coverage over all of that.
Thanks❤ yes experimenting with plant dyeing is trial and error. Yes I did soak in a vinegar/ water bath as well. Thanks for the tips, I think it is very interesting. I look forward to trying it again 😊 I hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend and it didn't snow your way😮
I’ve also tried different dyeing techniques with bleach, and that can give you some really cool results as well. I think that book looks really neat. The sundress pattern looks really really cute.
So sorry that your dying experiment didn’t turn out well. We used to dye fabric with blackberry juice, beet juice, onion skins and a bunch of other stuff when I was a kid. My grandmother was a master of that kind of thing. I don’t remember much about it, myself. As far as books to learn to dye with food, you would be better off trying to find an old book from back in the day instead of a new one. The people writing those books today are not up on the old techniques, so the projects don’t turn out. I’ll try to find one of my grandmother’s recipes for dying fabric and email it to you. The beet dye is not as bright as the liquid looks, but it should not look like dirt. 🥵 That bag turned out great, I like that fabric, it’s a good color. There are so many free bag patterns floating around the internet, you could make patterns for years and not make them all. The count so far on the dress a girl, is over 5000. Wow! Unbelievable! I waited up for your live show last night until 10 pm, then I guess I passed out in my chair! 😮 take care.
Well I was experimenting so it was a learning experience. I will try it again. Love the tip about finding old books. What a good idea. I think it is interesting, there are so many different techniques to learn and try. So true lots of free patterns out there I was just looking for something specific and this caught my eye you could say. I am sorry you waited for the live, I was having technical difficulties and community post note went up late. My apologies. ❤😊
I have a lot to learn in the dyeing department. Definitely try it again. The purple came out really dark, love that. Trial and error, maybe I should write down what I did lol. The Tytka bag designs are unique.

Thats so disappointing about the beet dye experiment. However I love the purple. I'll have to check out the bag designer.
