    Absolutely, track selection is key. There is such a stigma with using the sync button that just doesn't deserve the bad rep it has. Like mentioned in the video it is important to know what to do from the basics up, beatmatching by ear, beatmatching by looking at the decks/software tempo and grid, and then using the sync button. The key is to know you do not have to rely on any one thing working (other than the decks actually playing the records!). Learning all methods also opens more possibilities and gives a wider perspective. But ultimately, techniques and methods are just a tool to make it easier to get the desired result. The true art of DJing comes from being in the moment and brining positive energy to the dancefloor, I guess from good awareness of the crowd and track selection.

    I think is sync is fine. What makes me mad is prerecorded sets. I checked some videos of pystrance dj's at the Universo Parrallelo festival jumping around twisting some effects nobs and thats it. No track selection or beat matching going on at all.

  • @avationmusic

    Using sync is fine imo because it’s just something that speeds up time provided you know how to beatmatch without using sync if the need ever arises. For example, the system might read the bpm/grid wrong and doesn’t sync properly in which case you have to beat match by ear. If you can do both methods, then I see no problem in using sync because it gives you more time to set up cool transitions and play with some effects to keep the crowd interested. DJs only hate using sync because of their egos, but the crowd won’t know whether you’re using sync or not, thus your main focus as a DJ should be on making your transitions clean and smooth.

    • @1991elliot
      @1991elliot 4 года назад +2

      I would argue transitions are not that important. If a DJ is playing to people in a club that are drunk they won't notice a 'bad' transition, or if they do they probably won't care. What is more important is keeping a fairly consistent tempo (not jumping BPMs) and keeping the right sort of energy going in the crowd, which arguably comes from track selection alone.

    DJing is all about using the tools you have and creating something memorable. Beat matching is fallback skill for sure but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using Sync. Case in point I've DJed for 25 years and I can beat match by ear so well now that if I beat matched manually I'd still arrive at the exact same point that just pushing "sync" would do. it just takes longer! So now I just hit sync and use that time to be more creative with loops, stems, longer seamless mixes, etc.
    I've heard plenty of people trying to be a DJ that push the sync button and their mixes still sound awful, their choice of tunes is well off and their ability to the read the crowd is non-existent, THAT is where real DJing skills come in to play.

    DJ for almost 30 years. I use sync in a few situations. I just created a two hour set where I switch from UK speed garage to DNB, and I use it to lock in both tracks and control the speed of both with the master tempo. Also, I have in past sets have like 15 minute sections that are mixed very fast, I sometimes have l between 16 and 32 bars to drop in the next track to keep the short mix of many tracks on a short amount of time.
    But, one problem I have with beat sync is getting stuck. It's happened on a pair of CDJs where the button stopped working. But it's just a tool. You have to know how to best match. There are many edge cases

    sync is actually a helpful tool. to deny the use is limiting. there is nothing inherently wrong with using sync. beginners quickly learn that it is not a cheat code and to rely on it in place of your ears is foolish. silly how being able to see the wave forms, key of a song, using the bpm counter, loops, hot cues AND not to mention having access to your entire music library by scrolling on a screen is OKAY but god forbid you use sync. unless you use cdjs exactly like a vinyl turntable, suggesting that a dj who uses sync is somehow inferior is a complete hypocrite.

      Depends who your audience is. Sure in a club, nobody gonna care, sync away. There's a lot of us who care about hi-fi in djing, rotary, vinyl and high quality audio being a big interest to some of us. And with listening bars becoming more popular, this will only grow. It's as much about enjoying the actual act as it is the track selection. There's a balance between the two.

    To almost achieve what he fails to do you must be able to see two decimal places.
    When Pioneer show you 2 decimal places the controller is unable to hit every point at the second decimal place.
    When Pioneer give you a controller that can hit every point at the second decimal place, they give you display with one decimal place. Why they making it difficult.
