  • Determined to produce my own veggies year round, I'm experimenting with 3 ways to grow salad greens indoors in this video. I compare the Aerogarden Harvest Elite Slim home hydroponic kit, my go-to seed starting kit, and the 'double cup' method for growing salad greens in my home during the winter months. See which method came out on top & which could use some tweaking!

      @@GrowfullywithJenna Yes! I attempted and failed to grow indoors last year, but I bought better lights and will try again this year. I didn't realize my potting mix did not have fertilizer, so my plants starved from lack of nutrients and insufficient light.
      I'm tempted by that all in one garden though. 😅

    Any kind of greens in the winter is fine. Keep trying until you fine what works best. I went out and cut some Portuguese Kale the other day and we've been eating for two days and it's so good.

    Hello from Canton! I use heavy duty 1020 flats. 1 slotted and 1 solid. Hydrate soil mix (peat moss, perlite and vermiculite) with boiling water to kill any bug eggs. 6k daylight bulbs. 14 hours on. I fertilize with diluted fish emulsion and kelp every 2 weeks. Ate off plants in cut/come again style for 4 months. I have a microgreen shelving unit set up so I just used it. Vivosun makes great lights but I used led linkable lights off Amazon. Like $80 For set of 4. They work great for growing greens!

      Hello my Northeastern neighbor! Thanks so much for sharing your set up- it sounds simple & very effective. I will be trying this very soon! Do you focus on growing lettuce, or do you do mixed greens of all sorts? Thanks again for sharing and have a great weekend!

    • @tan2230
      @tan2230 3 года назад +2

      Aside from microgreens I mainly grow different varieties of romaine lettuce. Large firm leaves are easy to wash and salad spin. I'm currently trying some radishes for the 1st time. Side note...I started a food forest last year and want to incorporate a market garden. Would you do framed beds or go borderless? I'm probably going to do 30" beds. What are your thought?

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 года назад +1

      @@tan2230 Romaine types are my favorite! And I'd love to hear how the radishes do for you.
      Regarding the beds-- it is totally dependent on your individual needs. In my own garden, I get the most bang for the buck (so to speak) by forming elevated, in-ground planting rows or beds with devoted aisles/walk-ways between them. My soil is heavy clay with poor drainage, so raising up planting areas and avoiding compaction is key. I am constantly working on improving my native soil in these beds and adding amendments, but I'm not bringing in any extra soil to build up the beds and I don't find that framing them in is necessary. I use framed-in raised beds when I want to actually bring in some extra soil (or add A LOT of organic matter all at once) to fill the beds. The only crop I've found this particularly useful for is carrots and early spring salad greens. The soil in my raised beds is much faster draining than my native soil, with a higher percentage of sand than clay, so it's well suited to growing things like carrots or getting in early when the rest of the garden is too water-logged to plant. I hope this helps, and let me know if I can provide any additional info. Have a great evening!

    Ha. Love it. Yet again, doing the same here. Working on my indoor set up. Got lights and shelves everywhere. Also working on mixing my own potting soils and figuring out lights. Fun stuff. Part of my mission is to learn better seed starting practices. Another is to provide greens for myself and my chickens. Yup go led. Crank up the wattage and spectrum. For me, aero garden too much to spend for so little growing room, though it looks like it works well.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 года назад +1

      Definitely agree with you on the Aerogarden spend for the growing room-- The amount of lettuce I can harvest per cutting is about enough for 1 salad (granted I eat mixing bowl sized salads, but still). I'd like to have enough to supplement my chickens as well. It's a never-ending process of experimentation for sure!

      @@GrowfullywithJenna Yeah, I'm constantly changing things around. If I find a better way, I won't hesitate to use it. Got to keep the ladies and Bucko happy and well fed. @@bbtruth2161 delightful! Those are some spoiled chickens! Our oldest rooster's name is Bob. Now we also have a Freddy (who we thought was a Freida till he started to crow) and a Shiny Poppycock (the kids name our chickens). The closest they get to pumpkin bread is the seeds & innards of the pumpkins (which they love).

    I've tried several set ups and my current one is 2 gallon pots with a 50 cent saucer (WM) that you can buy when they're in stock. You can turn the pots and space them as they grow and I even stake them with a bamboo when they've gotten tall. Succession planting gives you large leaf lettuce along with fish emulsion. One plant per pot... is great for lettuce. You can use a 2 or 3 gallon pot for collards and kale that can be transferred into the garden come spring. Leaf gets large enough to make wraps with. I'd be transferring those seedlings into larger pots.... to eliminate crowding and get large, healthy plants. Gotta eat your GREENS! 🥬🥗🥬☀😎

    One that tube light is it a T8, T5 or what is it? Lettuce will do just fine under 12 hours of light. Tomatoes and fruity plants need at least 14 hours. That Aero Garden is sweet little system but for the price my wing light and cheap tote using the kratky method works really awesome for an 1/8 of the cost. I am doing a tomato plant under a new light that was sent to me for reviewing. Last year I done one under a couple Sansi lights that done ok but needed more. With a little luck this Spider Farmer light will do a much better job. That video will be out Monday. I had to laugh on the south window lettuce ya done. That was priceless my friend. Stay safe and warm up there and have a wonderful rest of the week!

      I knew you'd have some words of wisdom on this topic CB! That tube light is a T-5... I know nothing about indoor lighting, and would like to get a really good one, but have no idea where to start! I look forward to that video. That was my thought on the Aerogarden too- I figured a homemade version could do just at well without being so spendy. My goal this winter is to follow your tutorials for the kratky method and give that a go! Thanks and I hope you have a wonderful week as well!

      All depends on what you want to grow Mrs. Jenna. That Sansi wing light I use for my lettuce is amazing. I have a few videos on that setup last year and kept it going ever since. T5 lights work really well also. Trick to those are to keep them around 12 to 16 inches above the plants. I have used so many different light setups over the years. My shed use to be a full blown garden over the winter. Wish I had been doing YT back then as you would be amazed at the peppers and tomatoes I grew in there. If you ever have questions I am here to help my friend. I don't bite.. Well not to hard anyway. LMBO..

      Most welcome my friend. Sorry if I have become a thorn in your side. Guess it is just from all the years of doing this stuff makes me want to help others when I see it. I am far from an expert! Never claimed to be one as said in many of my videos. I'm just an old fart trying to grow some veggies and help others that want to learn. Something tells me there is more to your experience then you let on. 30 years I read you been growing is amazing and your garden shows it! Stay safe and warm up there.

      @@CBsGreenhouseandGarden you are absolutely not! I enjoy learning from folks who have 'been there, done that' and life experience counts for a whole lot!! And yes- I think my dad prepped my first garden plot when I was about 8... and now I'm a vegetable, herb and annual flower seed trial manager. I know a fair amount about growing outdoors- but every day I'm floored by what I have yet to learn! But that's part of what I love about gardening. I appreciate all of your insight CB!

      Hi Heather- funny you should mention this because I just last week bought the supplies to build a Kratky set up (I want to try in both a 10 gallon tub & in mason jars)! I think it does sound like the ideal way to do lettuce indoors. I should have set it up earlier in the winter, but better late than never! Thanks for the great suggestion & have a wonderful evening!
