To think that we almost lost Larry in 1988 to a crazed gunman outside of his home studio, "Room 335". Thank God he survived and is still playing beautifully over 30 years after that awful day. Larry, we still love you; thanks for sharing your great talent and soul. The world is a much better place with you in it!
I’m from Lomita California originally like Larry, I never knew that until now. I remember the day he got shot as I was living down the road from him at the time.
I heard he was shot point blank with a 357 magnum. it might have had 38s in it but he's very lucky to survive. I loved his strikes twice album back in the 70s.
5:02 I love that a legend with such an extensive library of music said that. I practice every single day, but if someone asks me to play something I’m like…. Oh boy what should I play?
He seems a little nervous when he starts playing. How refreshing! I loved it when he asked "What do I play?" He's just a human being, not a "guitar player." So many guitar players are a guitar player, and being human gets completely lost for them.
As far as price on Carlton's 1969 335, $850 in 69 translates to $6,237 today. Sweetwater sells them new for $3,300 to $4,000 today. Looking at the past, the older you get, the better it was. I know. I'm 72, and it's true!
I was introduced to Mr. Larry Carlton in 1969 by a band mate of mine named Jamie Shane, who was a next door neighbor and a close friend of Mr. Carlton in Newport Beach, CA. Jamie Shane told me that Mr. Carlton was selling a motorcycle, a Honda Scrambler, and I bought it from him. I rode it home to Hollywood where I used to live, and I almost killed myself because I barely knew how to ride a motorcycle, what an adventure when I got on the freeway! A couple of years later The Crusaders double album came out with Mr. Carlton playing in it, I was blown away! Then “Lighting Strikes” came out and I was mesmerized by his solo on “Mulberry Street.” I still have both albums. Backtrack: the day that I went to Mr. Carlton’s house, he was jamming with a couple of friends, one of them was his longtime keyboardist sorry to say that I forgot his name, but they were smoking hot! Playing jazz, blues, etc. To this day Larry Carlton is one of my top five favorite guitar players ever, and indeed, not only is he a phenomenal musician, but also an outstanding human being.
Travis, Larrys son, is an amazing bass player. Saw him in 2008 playing with his dad at the Jazz Cafe in London.Travelled 600 miles round trip to see that gig and it was worth it.
Yeah Mr Larry. If I had a music store I would lose my mind if you came in. As a guitarist I am floored just to see how down to earth you are and your son is amazing -- be proud!!
We love having you in Nashville Larry!!!! It has caused many musicians to move to the Music Capital!!! Definitely one of my favorite Guitarists of all time!!!!
One of those handful of guys early on that totally made me wanna play guitar. Great to see you still strumming the git-box Larry. You're a national treasure by now!
Thank you Larry ... I was lucky enough to see you here in Sydney Australia ,one of the most memorable concerts I've been to. True gentleman and amazing performer.
listen to his alone but never alone acoustic song beautiful...saw him at the Bottom Line in nyc years ago one of the very best shows....any genre larry really nails it!
Wow...what a touch and what tone. I love the 335 and LC is the reason why. Man...I hope he isn't having any nerve type illness (Parkinson's,etc.). Live long and prosper Mr. 335...stay in good health for the health of your many fans out here!
I too have noticed, Rick Beato did an interview with Mr. Carlton, you can watch it for yourself. We all get old (myself included), hands don't work the same way they did decades ago. It's been said "Getting old is painful and expensive, but still better than the alternative". I can't say enough good things about Mr. Carlton that haven't already been spoken/written, he truly is a gift to us all. Myself, I consider Larry Carlton the Guitar Players Guitarist. May we be Blessed with his music and inspiration for many, many years to come.
Mr. Carlton is an American Treasure ... and so humble. I had the pleasure of seeing him live at the Roxy, here in LA, when he came out with Strikes Twice. I bought his first few albums. The solo and fills on Kid Charlemagne are just the tip of the iceberg regarding what Mr. Carlton can do.
One of the greatest ever!! LC is a hero to many of us and it's so great to see him still performing and kicking ass! We're not worthy! Always inspiring Mr.335. 🙌
I was lucky and got to see The Classics Concert last night at Citifield in NYC. As Larry stated he was filling in. Terrific concert, by The Doobie Bros, Steely Dan, and The Eagles, all were really excellent. Larry made my night playing Kid Charlemagne, the solo note for note, perfection and grace! Thank you!
Larry Carlton & Robben Ford is why I bought myself a ES335. Although I will never ever be a skilled guitarplayer like Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith or Kirk Fletcher... I enjoy picking up a guitar and play. And I enjoy listening to the guys that can play!
Fun interview, yes...but WHOA that is one gorgeous guitar! The cherry red finish on that '62 has the most luxurious warm silky satin glow, I guess that's what beautifully maintained nitro looks like 55+ years.
I was happy to see Larry Carlton play alongside Jon Herington in Vegas. Larry came on for Kid Charlemagne and did a wonderful job on the few songs. Black Cow and Kid Charlemagne. The next day I was lucky enough to get a guitar lesson from Jon Herington!!
Saw both Larry Carlton and Robin Ford playing together at a small venue here in Salt Lake City. Pretty much an unforgettable evening of music, just amazing!
The other concert of the three that Larry played on was the Greenwich (CT) Town Party..Located right were I have my regular day gig! Didn't make it though, had a gig of my own that night. If I knew Larry was playing, I would have cancelled on the spot.
Larry seems to be a great guy, reserve fella. I bought his album when it came out, to this day he still amazes me, especially in “point it up” solo, his in he’s own league, everybody else is just a copy of that style, thanks Larry, you’re the man ✌🏻
To think that we almost lost Larry in 1988 to a crazed gunman outside of his home studio, "Room 335". Thank God he survived and is still playing beautifully over 30 years after that awful day. Thank you jellyfish! Your words are so heartfelt and I agree totally
I’m from Lomita California originally like Larry, I never knew that until now. I remember the day he got shot as I was living down the road from him at the time.
Yeh, what was that all about? Some asshole shoots him in the throat! His Left arm paralyzed for a while. He was working on an album at the time...
I've been a fan of Larry's for years but I had no idea he'd been shot, what on earth was that all about ?
I heard he was shot point blank with a 357 magnum. it might have had 38s in it but he's very lucky to survive. I loved his strikes twice album back in the 70s.
Larry Carlton ..... super guitarist , minimal ego , class act all the way.
...and is playing WES chords and sounding like Wes..... never go wrong doing that.

Those beautiful old Gibsons were built in my hometown, right down the road from me. It's still a very special place and I visit there often
He seems a little nervous when he starts playing. How refreshing! I loved it when he asked "What do I play?" He's just a human being, not a "guitar player." So many guitar players are a guitar player, and being human gets completely lost for them.
What a great guy - Larry Carlton !!!! ... And how this beautiful ES-335 sounds in his hands !!!! ..................My heart is too full for words !
Evan Gart Nice, bro. Let music move you! (Let great music change you...)

One of the best guitarists ever !! In my opinion! Seems like a very nice man.
Incredibly beautiful !!! All of we Japanese guitarists are like your disciples. Mr.Carlton is the God of the guitar to us.
What about the incredible Jimmy Sakurai?

Larry Carlton...what a nice feel in his sound..it's just great ..
Proves that there is plenty of room at the top and guys like Larry prove that you don't have too have a monster ego even if if you are a genius.
Love Larry Carlton. One of the masters at his craft.
Agreed, I've heard that Large Mouth Bass and Perch fear him!
Always inspiring to hear Larry Carlton.
Larry is a god amongst musicians.
Larry Carlton a Guitar God for sure! An alien!
When Mr. 335 is your sub, you know you've made it.
Omg...that's great playing, and sound. Thanks for all the great music Larry. Class act!

Larry's solo on kid charlamagne is one of the all-time greatest ever
Can't decide between his work on Kid Charlemagne and Don't Take Me Alive as my favorite Larry Carlton offering. They're both amazing.
Such a nice chap, and one of the greats, I wish I had one third of his talent.
third my ass...Ill take 10 percent
I think everyone needs a 335 and it's got to be a Gibson, what a treat. Thanks Larry, thanks Norm.
But, but, but I could only afford an Epi at the time. I have only had it since 2019, like it and will likely keep it.
@@geraldhenrickson7472 I have an Epi 339 with Seymour Duncans. It's outstanding, a keeper too!
Yeah Mr Larry. If I had a music store I would lose my mind if you came in. As a guitarist I am floored just to see how down to earth you are and your son is amazing -- be proud!!
Just the best So well spoken. He is so kind & humble. Thanks so much.
Larry Carlton is an institution in Jazz. Great that he keeps it alive. Love it!

He plays at 6:05
a couple of us are actually interested in his anecdotes
Barnaby Wylde
Well, many weren't. I didn't make you skip.
god's work
boring pair of old farts... 6:05 is when the real talking starts for oooo about 12 seconds.... ffs not getting that time back
You apparently have no clue who Larry Carlton is then.
I transcribed the solo to Kid Charlemagne in '79 note for note and taught it to dozens of students. So good.
Fun interview, yes...but WHOA that is one gorgeous guitar! The cherry red finish on that '62 has the most luxurious warm silky satin glow, I guess that's what beautifully maintained nitro looks like 55+ years.
Totally agree. Absolutely fab guitarist and Es- 335 style guitars are amazing👍
What Larry just played there was SO hip! He pushes the blues like no other....
Great guitar master
He has Perfact and beautiful sound
"We're not worthy, we're not worthy." The man is a legend.
You are right - the man is a legend, but, exactly what is it that "we are not worthy" of ?
@@BernieHolland-w4l You didn't see Wayne's World?

One of the best eletric guitarists ever. Skills and soul !
Don't take me alive....All time best intro.
Well...it’s pretty much the *only* guitar solo intro....as it should be. Any other will end up being compared to Larry’s and fall short
My fave guitarist of the 80s and 90s....
Radical such a nice man, great, great musician, learn what I can from him. Great interview! Made my day for sure. Hope he catches the big one!
Saw both Larry Carlton and Robin Ford playing together at a small venue here in Salt Lake City. Pretty much an unforgettable evening of music, just amazing!
