Got a crick in my neck watching this , but very nice and helpful
Doing mine this weekend, I believe T20 for skid plate. Had a rebuild tranny when I bought this 2022, but started getting grind noise. Have redone back diff several times to fix leak, so doing front this time
A boat lower unit pump works great . Its a hand pump with hose
Thanks guys. Great video, especially for having to do this job on the garage floor. None of this looks particularly hard, just kind of annoying, especially those skid plate bolts for the transfer case.
I appreciate it! Ya it's not a super tough job but laying on the garage floor does add a variable to it haha.
What was thst uou put in it?? Didn't look like 80/90 gear lube to me. Dandahermit
The transfer case will drain right through the holes on the skid plate, if you want to save the hassle of removing it.
With working on these ole’ reliable trucks/SUV, penetrating lubricant is required. Makes everything easy
couple of questions,, you have the front wheels on ramps,, are the rear wheels on ramps? Do you just use the capacity stated in the manual, or fill until it leaks out the fill hole?.
Capacity listed in the manual if on ramps or jackstand. Fill until it leaks out if its level.
Is the drain plug and fill plug on the transfer case interchangeable?
Thats a good question. I am not sure, but if you need a new drain plug or fill plug, I'd suggest getting it from rockauto.
You need to take xtra precautions by using floor jacks or jack stand to support that plastic ramp!!!!
Haha you’re right. We had the rear wheels chalked but we probably should have put a stand or 2 under there. However, those ramps are actually rated for a pretty heavy load.
@@bossadamsgarage Yes understood, but remember if it fails....your toast. Research them plastic ramps or Rhino Ramps........they do and will crumble on ya. Alway's a few will fail.
I have seen them ramps shatter. I made some 2 X 12 wooden ramps for about $65 in supplies. Stained and ready to go
I just got a 95 1500 but 4x4 it’s not working hopefully I will fix it soon.
Check the 4wd actuator
Great vid. Thanks much. Question. What fluid was used in the transfer case? I have a '95.
Valvoline Full Synthetic Transfer Case Fluid, we picked it up at our local autozone
@@bossadamsgarage Thanks so much
I use dextron 2 that's what the owners manual says
The transfer case on my 1999 Suburban has no drain plug. It's one of those Auto 4wd transfer cases with the Autotrac fluid. You can fill it, but not drain it. I bought a gallon of Redline MTL fluid for the Autotrac, but that's just weird that it has no drain plug.
That's pretty wild. I've never heard of a transfer case not having one!
Suck it out
Auto tracs have a 10 mm hex socket real small not like big bolts this case has
@kenjuicekrajewski9577 Yes, I did find it. The problem is that it is seized. I had my mechanic work on it, and still no go. In the end, I was able to remove the top plug, so I sucked out most when hot from driving. I got most, but not everything. Then I refilled. I figure I can replace a little more often, around 25k, to keep it more fresh.
Just keep pumping in new fluid until it runs back out looking new again
Good video, I just got a 98 a few weeks ago and I want to change all the fluids out. Is it the same fluid capacity for all model years of that generation you think?
I believe so, I have a 98 extended cab as well and that’s the same amount I ran out in mine.
What size T bits are on he skid plate protecting the transfer case?
I'll be honest with you man, I do not remember. My buddy had a set of them. If I had to guess, it was probaby in the T20-T30 range. But again that is a guess. I would recommend just buying a set that covers you from the low numbers all the way up to a T50 and that should have one that fits. Something like this set, amzn.to/3eEsKyH.
How much fluid in front diff and transfer case?
The manual says 1.4 quarts but I believe we ended up using closer to 2 quarts when it was all said and done.
You need to get a creeper so you can slide right under
I agree. That's next on the necessary tools in the budget!
what oil did you use for the front diff
We used 75w-90. The manual recommends 80w-90 but 75w is a little upgrade over the 80.
@@bossadamsgarage thank you
@@bossadamsgarage do you need to use limited slip oil
Hum they make a pump for quart bottles
Ya we saw a couple online, but I wanted to show what you can use if you don’t have one or don’t necessarily have the extra money for a pump.
So all I need to buy is one court of tranny fluid?
We bought transfer case fluid, which is what is required. The transfer case on these trucks take 2.4 quarts.
Transfer case skid plate was the sh!t to get off! Not really that bad, but good grief I got a hand cramp.
Air tool and impact socket T20
..set that hand soap bottle full of that pretty red "hand soap" on the bathroom counter and wait for wife to use it... :)
Lol that might be a good prank to pull on someone!
Easier find spray bottle top that fits right on fluid bottle
You're not posting type of fluid used?
Sorry about that. Links to the fluids used are in the description of the video now.
Why couldn’t you use a funnel and run a hose down through the engine bay and stick the hose in the fill hole ? 🤷🏻♂️
That's a pretty good idea. Hadn't thought of that. Could possibly work but we were working with what we had in the garage.
How much fluid did you put in the transfer case?
The manual says 1.4 quarts but I believe we ended up using closer to 2 quarts when it was all said and done.
Why did I watch this my Chevy is 2 wheel drive 😆
Haha we appreciate it anyway! Hope you enjoyed it!
A true chevy fan 🤣
