    Hi folks.
This is a, sort of, recap to my time on the SUPERB Africa Twin.
We had just spent a weekend camping in Wales, which is where I rode my first miles (and IT's first miles) on it.
It's clear from this video how I feel about it.
This bike, as it stands, with all the fitted extras would cost £17,244.
    Base model RRP is £12,999

Great to see you having so much fun. Your enthusiasm is contagious! I’ve been riding a 2016 AT DCT in Japan for the last 18months. It is so incredibly versatile and easy to ride on the narrow mountain roads.

I remembered being so impressed with this video, photography, location and the review of the bike. Just revisited to see if the 1000 DCT was any lesser performer than the 1100, I think not.
Love the graphics, sound an overall look of this one........Great video, many thanks 👍

Brilliant video Sir really enjoyed it. I'm into my 4th year of CRF1000 ownership, the DCT is very addictive. That Honda tall screen just doesn't work on the bike, in fact shorter screens work better, I have stock screen with MRA spoiler added.

You have just relieved my Lockdown blues. The roads you picked are favourites of mine and funnily enough I did the lane a while ago in the mud on an 06 1200 GS with the lovely Louise as pillion. Hilarious! and the Honda certainly handled it better. Love your enthusiasm and on the back of this the Honda with DCT has gone to the top of my list as a replacement for the GS.

The AT, was my first dream adventure bike, then i saw the tenere700 with a little less gadgetry, and 1 or 2 other bikes with other things, but i keep seeing the AT, videos like yours and its videos like yours, thats cemented it for me permanently, thars just no comparison it has to be the africa twin no question about and the one i preferred to start off with, and yes i agree its got the look of a animated superhero look of it and the sound is better than the rest. 👍

Headlights are pretty impressive, something most reviews don't cover as they are only reviewed in daylight. So one up for you Richy. And the switchgear could be illuminated as well. In fact it should now be mandatory on ALL new bikes with the many buttons to press and wiggle.

Many thanks for this and the great shots! Yours aye, Alan

Hands down the best review i have seen for the AT & iv'e watched a few as it was on my short list last autumn when i was in the market,
Could really see you on an adventure bike when funds permit, as i think you would make full use of its capabilities
** Ohh & i'm pretty sure you can retro fit cruise control on these long as its the later ride by wire model for about £300 watch lamb chops rides ** I personally think they missed a trick & should of fitted it as standard considering most people use them for touring

I tried the GS but fell in love with the AT within the first mile of the test ride. I'm in my second month and love every mile on mine. I only have 30" inside leg and are fine with the seat in the lower position. The ATAS however would need longer legs. Thanks Richy!

Great review, I picked up an Africa Twin Adventure Sports a couple of weeks ago. I love it, been riding for over 45 years and this is in the top 5 bikes I have ever owed or ridden. Im 5'11" and ride with the seat in the low position. I didnt get any buffeting with the stock shield but in cooler weather I feel its way too "vented" so for now I popped on a Puig Touring shield and the airflow is just at perfect. I have zero complaints about anything on the bike. I grew up on dirt bikes so the height doesn't bother me. I read on the forums of people replacing the seat and I have come to the conclusion people just replace shit on a motorcycle for bragging rights. "oh look at my new $1000 seat"...... The stock seat is fine. I ride 120 miles a day to work and my butt hasn't complained yet. This might be the perfect motorcycle for me. Oh and mine is a manual.

Great video, as always. If you commented on engine temp and vibes, I missed it. I love my newly-purchased 2015 VFR Interceptor Deluxe with quick shifter but I am always surprised at the engine temps I see. (I live in the Southwest Desert in the US). So I'm always curious about engine temps on Honda's bikes and curious about vibrations on any bike. Obviously, vibes not an issue with the smooth-as-glass VFR.

Once again Richy a brill video, very informative. Know what you mean about DCT. I ride a 750X with DCT and after enduring some flack from mates who said ''It's a scooter''🛵 But i absolutely love it , by the way, don't know if you can fit a electronic foot gear pedal on to a Africa twin but I've had one fitted to my 750X really changes the feel of bike it's more like a quickshifter. Keep up the good work 😁

    • @gordonLP
      @gordonLP 5 лет назад

I would imagine with the DCT in manual the foot shifter would be quite good (I have an X-ADV so I'm aware of the options), but you then have to question why have the DCT version as its heavier, more complicated and cost more. I'm still not sure about the DCT, for me it always seems to be in the wrong gear when you want to overtake (I know you can knock it down, but it will nearly always just change up again), it also has an annoying habit of changing up whilst cornering on round-abouts, I think on balance from my experience with DCT, I would stick with the manual option.

I bought a DCT back in 2016 when they came out. I went for it as I'd enjoyed a couple of test rides. Ultimately I didn't get on with DCT as it lacked the involvement I wanted in a bike so I sold it after 900 miles. I prefer to have a regular gearbox - especially with an upshifter and blipper which you'd imagine is quite similar to DCT! Can't explain why - just horses for courses. I also felt it was a little top heavy and tall for me (32" inseam, 5ft 11 ins). And my spokes rusted! Everything else was great though.

Those lights must have been bright to show up on the GoPro like that.

As always, the GP doesn't show it like it was. They are super bright.

Well that’s the best shot night riding video I have ever seen. The lights look great. Would love to try one but then I might want to change my NC750X DCT and the Mrs would not be happy!

I think this is a very well rounded and thought out video and description of the attributes of the Africa Twin DCT. I really liked that he could ride and talk, without wind buffeting interruption. I'd like to have riding that quiet. I know that's more than likely an attribute of the camera used more than anything else. I'm new to the AT and the DCT and so far, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I appreciate, how much he APPRECIATES the bike and all it offers. Great video and representation of the bike. I especially liked the way he condemned the trashy area he found. Some people are such boneheads.

Cheers Scott, and welcome. I did a review on the brand new one, too. I shot up to Scotland in January on it. Some would say foolish at that time of year, but I had a great time, and the series of vids it produced (in my opinion) are really great. Check it out!

For me anyway the Africa Twin is the best looking by a long way of all the adventure bikes.
I rode one when they 1st came out. I had the bike for 2 days and put 700 miles on it, and found it comfy and capable on road. Its a big bike but the engine was a bit dull, a bit meh.
Dunno if they've improved engine performance now or not.
For on road use the powerplant is a bit uninspiring.
    Thanks Rich.

How long ago ? I test drove the 2018 model (and bought the 2019) and touched 90mph and still felt like it had much more power to give.

I owned a 2017 standard shift and thought it had great power. I did NOT drive it in low RPMS but rather enjoyed the 1000cc engine in 45-7500rpm range and had a gas!!....and had to gas up a lot...but what fun! Great bike. I took it on a 14000km ride around South America and drove it completely differently, very calm low RPM and low speed most of the time to save rubber and make the next gas station...started in San Antonio Chile rode north a few hundred miles then to the Patagonia through Argentina and Southern Chile crossing the Andes numerous times, then back north again crossing the Andes often and to the northern sections of Argentina, back in the Alti Plano of Chile and Peru, to Ecuador and finally Columbia, tons of off road mixed conditions, snow, rain, very high winds, blazing sun, deep mud, water crossings and millions of turns and twists on very fun routes!! etc. The bike NEVER skipped a beat and had TONS of power even at 4800m above sea level.
Its an outstanding machine, and extremely forgiving and easy to ride.

I’ve had one for a 18 months now, didn’t really like the DCT at first. Now I think it’s a great bike, standard tyres are shite in the wet. The only thing I would change is to tubeless as I don’t get why Honda went with tubes

RichyVida , Brilliant video. I was in two minds whether or not to get one (dct ) now i know i can lower the seat helps only being 5/7. looking at the video the only issue i might have would be there dos ent seem to be much protection for the rad ? did you feel that ..going to get a test run middle of February . Will keep you posted thanks again ..

Best video yet on the AT. I've got one of these in my shortlist and would like your opinion Richy. My short list you've ridden all 3. Honda's Cross Tourer, Cross Runner or Africa Twin. Like most people I won't be riding off road, which should I get?
Cheers, keep up the great video reviews
    Regards Steve
