    How to tell if a video about a controller is by Rerez:

      @@marksaile6419 I can think of more than a few arcade games with noticeable slowdown on the original hardware - the Metal Slug series (moresoe the earlier games, the later games generally run better) and Double Dragon were particularly good examples of this. Arcade hardware was generally far more powerful than home consoles, but developers could still push it a bit far/release not-so-optimized code on arcade boards.

      @@nayyarrashid4661 Well, it does give you a bit more reaction time in those hectic moments. It was definitely a side-effect from arcade devs trying to get their games noticed by being more and more bombastic - even arcade hardware has limits to how much it can process and still update at 60hz.

And even I have loaded nearly 2,000 classic games on SD cards and play them with a Super Retro-cade. There's even a joystick controller that's readily available and works on the Super Retro-cade right out of the box. Which is great because I can't stand those Nintendo style controllers. I've had my Super Retrocade since June, 2018 and it has worked like a champ. I've got a library of HUNDREDS of classic games with artwork saved on SD cards. Ditched the D-pads for a pair of Sanwa JLF-8YT USB joysticks and buttons which was simple with the RUclips tutorial. That thing is an incredible value! The only issue I have is that it won't play games that originally used vector graphics. Just using roms from the late 70's to 1989 I've got about 700 games saved on SD cards. The retro gaming forums were there EVERY time I had a problem or a question when I was getting started with ROMS, artwork, and upgrading the controllers.

    I'm so glad the company grew up a little bit in maturity and actually QUALITY TESTED and put in some freaking effort into the emulation AT LEAST! Always annoys me when companies make a profit from LACK OF EFFORT! It's very likely though they just hired better engineers for the job this time!

    • @fonarte

      Ketorulz you mean stolen emulation? They didn't hire anybody, retro bit subcontracted some Chinese company to steal. I mean, all these games could run perfectly 20 years ago , on my Pentium 3, using an old ass MAME build. There's nothing special about this device running them fine today. I don't know what they did wrong with the previous version but even a cheap phone from 2011 should be able to run these full speed. It's nothing to brag about.

    • @subzero8679

      Yeah thousands of dollars worth of bulky computer equipment vs a 3"×5" box that costs $60 bucks and you can add tons of games to it as well. Some people like console gaming. So what? Don't buy it if It's not for you, it's that simple.

    • @yellowblanka6058
      @yellowblanka6058 4 года назад +1

      I used MAME ~20 years ago, and you definitely weren't playing all those games "perfectly" on a Pentium 3, and that was even taking into account that the MAME version back then was WAY less accurate than the more modern versions. MAME has gotten more accurate, and thus, more demanding over time.

    • @yellowblanka6058
      @yellowblanka6058 4 года назад

      @@Imgema and mobile/Raspberry Pi etc. releases of MAME are just as out of date because they don't have the CPU horsepower for the more accurate emulation in newer builds of MAME. Regardless, my point stands that early MAME versions were anything but "perfect" when it came to emulation, I know, I used them - this was a time when just emulating these arcade games at ALL was exciting. Slowdown, graphical glitches, sound skipping and mandatory frame skip were the order of the day.

      Who cares? It's under the GPL, thay can't stop them from using it.
      "Their stance is it should never be used as a commercial product."
      So why did they licence it under the GPL? It wouldn't be to get a load of programmers working on it for them for free, now would it? Programmers that might not have worked on it had there been restrictions on commercial use?
      *REEEEEEEEEEE* all you want about businesses using open source software in their products (and isn't it strange that RetroArch only seem to go after small startups?) but the GPL *allows* that.

    This review underestimated the Super Retrocade badly and what it's really capable of. This device is awesome especially if you have a dual arcade stick. I legally own hundreds of Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and other 80's and 90's arcade games. I put all the games I own in rom form. It's much better than my emulation station/retroarch combo on my laptop. More options and better compatibility. Plus I can play everything through smooth hdmi and full screen on my curved monitor and plug in some gaming speakers. I also put everything from my Famicom Mini on it. Awesome device.

      Also the NES Classic obviously has to upscale, too, so that's a good example as well.
      I actually think that the blurred upscale is better. Pixels never were too sharp on real oldschool hardware. Even if the transfer to the CRT would have been perfect (which it wasn't), the CRT itself would round pixels and blur things a bit. Many games look quite frankly pretty horrible with sharp pixels, in my opinion.

    Did Retro-bit ask for permission to use RetroArch? I recognize that save state font at the bottom. I have a lot of doubts on the licensing of that.

      they should stop promoting these kind of stuff, specially if they are sold with the non-commercial use software.

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 7 лет назад +3

      RetroArch is released under the GPL, Retro-Bit don't need the developers permission.

    • @nilz91
      @nilz91 7 лет назад

      that does not state anywhere about selling software though!

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 7 лет назад

      The GPL does not prohibit commercial use.
      From the emulation shown here...
      NES emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (FCEUmm)
      Arcade emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (several versions of MAME)
      I don't know that console the console version of Mercs is, if it's the SNES, then AFAIK the only GPL'd emulator that can do SNES is MAME (as MESS) though I've personally never used MAME for that, I preferred it when MESS was a separate project.

    Great news about the system being much better than the Generations!! Was excited to hear about the release of this one but was nervous after getting the Generations. Still preordered it the Retrocade now just waiting till next Friday to get mine. Any news on the DLC or firmware updates they mentioned in their latest press release?

    How can you play games like Heavy Barrel & Midnight Resistance which both used the rotary joystick? Is there a special rotary joystick usb controller that you can buy to play all those rotary joystick games on MAME like Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, etc.?

    Sega controllers work really well with this console and the bundled controllers aren't that bad. I bought this console from this review and I love it. I've added over 50 snes and sega games that all run perfectly. The loads and saves also run faster when the game stays paused as opposed to still running

    The two NES games I test to see how well the D-pad is are Ninja Gaiden and Contra. Those two games pretty much give me an idea on how well it will be.
    Button layouts just need getting use to.
    Oh yeah, I also like testing it out on Street Fighter 2 and MK

    That's the main draw for me with these emulation boxes, well *OFFICIAL* emulation boxes, compared to just emulating off my computer or a Raspberry Pi is that I'm able to support these developers, which I obviously am probably not able to if I'm running these off of MAME or something like that. I already have an SNES Mini and am actually planning to get the NES Mini because I care more about it now, so I'm probably gonna get into looking into the Retro-cade as well. Kind of a shame that I won't be able to use my new BotW PowerA Switch controller, though.

    • @waterheart95

      You know this licensed product is using stolen roms downloaded from the internet and a stolen version of retroarch with non-commercial license cores such as FBA, Gamebattle, and Genesis Plus GX to name a few.

    • @fonarte
      @fonarte 7 лет назад

      Yeah supporting thieves you mean? They licensed the games and stole all of the software to run it. Ra and mame Devs get nothing and walked all over. None of these companies have enough gall to actually spend the time and money to make their own software.

    • @Chaos89P
      @Chaos89P 7 лет назад +1

      I never said I didn't want to support MAME or anything like that. I thought that it most likely that RetroBit *did* get the rights to these games. Holy crap, guys!

    The problem isn't that the resolution is being upscaled but rather that they're using android with retroarch as the emulator and it has bilinear filtering enabled by default making everything blurry

    This thing is awesome if you have little kids and you want to allow them to explore and enjoy the classics but don’t want them to ruin your pi. I personally really like my Super Retro Cade. The only down side is having to scroll through every game to find the one your want. That isn’t so bad if you are only playing the 90 games it comes with. But if you play games off the sd card...hoooboy.

    Was the cable you used with the controller that flat grey one in the video? It looks like an 8bitdo cable which I'm pretty sure only carries power and no data, which is why it wouldn't work. Did you try any other cables?

  • @316whatupz

    lol It is running the Android version of MAME. Not sure why they didn't go for the PC version of MAME. Probably using cheap hardware? That's my guess.

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 7 лет назад +2

      If by cheap hardware you mean an ARM SoC, then yeah.
      Don't know what you mean by the PC version of MAME, if you mean the Windows version, then not only would they have to build it from more expensive X86 parts, but they'd also have to licence Windows, which would probably triple the price.
      Why do that if a cheap as chips ARM SoC that you'd stick in a £40 smartphone will do and you can get AOSP for free? I mean, come on, you're emulating 20-30 year old arcade and console games. It doesn't need to play Crysis!

    • @316whatupz
      @316whatupz 7 лет назад

      Yes, the Windows version of MAME. I'm not even sure if they are paying the license for any of the emulators on this system. If they did, they should have the latest build source of MAME. The ARM SoC hardware would explain why MAME is running as it is in that console.

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 7 лет назад

      Well, they don't need to buy a licence for MAME or even RetroArch, they're both GPL'd and can be just taken and used. The only other platform I definitely saw being emulated was the NES and again, there are GPL'd emulators for that which you can take for free.
      It's only when you get into things like the MegaDrive or the SNES where all the emulators have a no commercial use clause or the Amiga, PSX or Dreamcast where you need copyrighted firmware to get it working when you need to get the lawyers and chaequebook.

    I saw on another video there is a way to play other games via the SD card. Also I'm hoping the internal hardware on the Dreamcade is identical to the Generations. That way maybe us Generations owners that were disappointed can hopefully upgrade at some point.
