AG, I actually clapped when you said you had lived long enough and were going to buy what you like! I feel exactly the same way. And I don’t care for generic Mac & cheese either. I have filled every nook and cranny in my apartment with my food preps. I was lucky enough to have a second coat closet in the apartment, and it is full of all things food. I also have prepped cleaning supplies, laundry detergent and ziplock storage bags. I have 4 bins full of food that I need to make a written inventory of. I so enjoy your videos!

I have made it a rule that no matter how short the trip, I will never leave without some form of protein, be it a can of corned beef, tuna or other fish, or even beans, or dried beans and lentils, no matter what. I have picked up every kind of vegetable, especially if it is something a little extra special that I think we would like, (this is after I am really stocked on basics.) I can't think of anything worse, (after starving), than having food fatigue.
I also have put away instant pudding mix if I have someone young here and they need fortification and to cover-up the perhaps less palatable milk, (dried or boxed). I have laid in jello-type dessert boxes in case someone becomes ill and needs to be on a liquid diet for a short time, (hopefully a short time.) I have a sports drink in bottles and mix for that reason, as well, along with some Pedialyte-type bottles.
I actually prefer the pint jars because I learned to pressure can to have lots of meat on hand and one pint of meat should be able to stretch, and we can always open more than one.

For those who are not opposed to cooking, I LOVE Chef John from Food Wishes here on You Tube. He's funny, gives excellent training. His recipes are outstanding. Check out his Lentil Gumbo and apple crisp for starters. When you make his recipes you will eat and love what you make. Left overs are as wonderful as the day you make it. If you take it to a pot luck people will love what you make. I also LOVE his asparagus soup and plan to give it a try with canned asparagus. I print many if his recipes just in case the internet goes down. I shop based on his recipes. Thankfully are local Farmers Market is now going to go year.

Went to Walmart today to get odds and ends. Shelves in our Walmart in central pa and even the local grocery chain have a number of large empty spaces throughout the stores. Green mountain coffees, cottage cheeses, etc. Plus prices are going up, seems like weekly. Stock up while you can, never know whats going to come. We like the Bear Creek dried creamy potato soup. It has dehydrated potato's in it (I sometimes boil real potato's, drain, and add them in the last 10 minutes, to bulk it up), you only add water and it's done within about a half hour. They have a variety of soups, but I haven't tried them yet. We also like the Keystone meats, which have a 5 year shelf life. I buy the roast beef (make hot beef sandwiches, use it over mashed potato's, or egg noodles, and sometimes add sour cream and mushroom's to make it more like stroganoff). I buy the chicken (good for wraps and casseroles), the ground beef (for tacos, burritos, and hamburg gravy), and the shredded pork (for sloppy joes). I also keep an inventory, of all household goods, along with the food, so It's easy to see what I need, at any given time.

Thanks. Always good to keep reminding people, don’t buy what you won’t eat, makes sense. A good point how you explain how to do a quick calculation about how many cans you would eat based on how often you eat them. Hearing reports of bad harvests for wheat, corn and potatoes so think of each of what you eat based those grains - such as cornmeal, even corn starch for products from corn; flour, pasta and others for wheat and dried and canned potatoes. Our grocery store stopped carrying canned turkey so don’t know if this can mean a Turkey shortage too! Thanks again AG!

Canned sausage gravy is good to have in your pantry. You can heat it and serve over toast or hash browns or freshly baked and split open Southern biscuits for a hearty breakfast or even put it over cooked white rice and top with a fried egg for a high calorie and thrifty lunch or dinner.
I would add some cans of baked beans and Spam and a canister of dried onions flakes and a bottle of BBQ sauce so I could make loaded baked beans. Just dice and brown the Spam, stir it into the beans along with some onion flakes and some BBQ sauce (and maybe a little ballpark mustard) and bake at 350" F in a casserole dish until the top is browned and crusty. This is a high-calorie dish for cold winter days that even finicky toddlers will like.
Canned yams/sweet potatoes and canned plain pumpkin puree are also good to have in the pantry. In addition to making a baked candied yam dish for the holidays, the yams/sweet potatoes and their sweetened liquid can be pureed in a blender and added to muffin batter or pancake batter. The pumpkin puree can also be added to batters too or used to make a thick winter soup.
For those with a bread machine, it is good to store pizza dough mixes in the freezer and then use the bread machine just on the dough cycle so you will have risen dough to make homemade pizza in your oven. Canned tomato sauce, dried Italian herbs, garlic powder, shredded mozzarella cheese from the freezer and some diced Spam make good pizza toppings when you are snowed in and cannot get to the supermarket or have a pizza delivered.

I have a question - I'm going to move out of state next spring. Would you try to eat through your pantry so there is less to move or continue to replenish as needed because prices are so unstable? When my canned meat gets within a couple month of best by date I like to give it to the food bank because they always need protein and they can't use it after the date. I am not sure where I need to fill in. You sure have me thinking about it though!
I have lots of seasonings, I want to make sure I have nutritious herbs and seasonings, as well as dried vegetables. I go through a lot of mushroom powder and kale (or spinach) powder as I try to boost the nutrition of everything I make. I don't always want a side of greens, but I can incorporate it by using powders. Then other stuff has medicinal properties. Of course we have canned, frozen, dehydrated options too.
Our garden wasnt great this year. I am focused on making sure we have what we need next year (seeds, supplies, etc) and having a plan. Trying to figure out what happened, what we could do better, and how to maximize the bounty.

You are such a blessing especially during the height of the pandemic with your tinned meat suggestions. Plus, it isn't just winter where I may not be able to get out of the house to go grocery shopping, this has been a very HOT, humid summer where I simply didn't want to go out. Thanks to you, my prepper pantry and your imaginative recipes came to the rescue. Sincerely appreciated.
