For me, this song is how I feel about myself and my son. I’ve struggled with depression and suicide for a very long time. I unexpectedly became pregnant and my son is special needs and I know I have to stay alive for him. 🖤
I was a heavy metal guy when I was young. Black Sabbath's "Die Young" was an anthem especially as I was a committed motor biker at the time. Never thought I'd see 30. Happily I've achieved 63 and loving Sylvan Esso. :;)
Was not expecting the ending I couldn't read first. As a 42 year old male that grew up on my parents music and the early rave scene, I feel as though my taste in music is beautiful as it gets. I'm so bummed I couldn't see her in Oct at Hula. She is a bucket list and you sir have great taste in music. I never thought I would make past 21.
That moment when "I was going to die young. Now I gotta wait for you, honey" is a heartfelt message you yourself. The song takes on a whole new meaning.
Great insight -- adds layers of additional depth to this (already beautiful) song. Thank you. I'm currently rereading Carl Jung, & what you've said fits right in.
Ok so i’m crying right now because of that outlook on this song. It’s like if you die young you won’t get to know the awesome person you could’ve become
You're so vain You probably think this song is about you You're so vain (you're so vain) I'll bet you think this song is about you Don't you? Don't you?
My partner confessed to me he had a plan to take his own life until he met me. The world would have been so robbed of his beautiful energy. This song is my love song to him
Sylvan - Thank you for being the woman I needed to see growing up. As a 33 year old woman, you have moved me to tears with your art, bravery, confidence, grace, poise, could go on and on but the point is your impact is so very real. Thank you from my heart to yours.
They are part of the soundtrack for my GF and I too (along with Whitney, Spoon, Ween and the Silver Jews). We haven’t seen Sylvan Esso yet, but we just this morning won the pre-sale lottery for their Red Rocks (CO) show (Summer, 2023). I wish we could’ve seen the Silver Jews. I envy those who did.
I seriously CAN NOT WAIT for this album to come out!! The video is amazing! You two are amazing! Amelia I love the faces you make in this video!!! Both of you are such good actors too!! AHHH my favorite band! !
I had it all planned out before you met me Was gonna leave early, so swiftly Maybe in a fire or crash off a ravine People would weep, "How tragic, so early" I was gonna die young Now I gotta wait for you, honey Now I gotta wait for you, honey Now I gotta wait for you, honey I was a firecracker, baby, with something to prove Now I gotta contend with the living blues I could've missed it, I never knew Chain reaction but you're holding the fuse I was gonna die young Now I gotta wait for you, honey Now I gotta wait for you, honey Now I gotta wait for you, honey Oh, I don't mind I got the fire Electric light So high, so wild It's not like I chose Not like I tried But now I gotta wait around and watch you burn so bright I was gonna die I had…
Hello everyone! There is something called a “foreshortened future”, a term that describes what happens when a person endures trauma to the point where they feel an inability to develop thoughts about their future. Instead, they grow so accustomed to surviving on a moment-by-moment basis, that the “future” begins to *feel* like a big, loud lie. They often expect to be sent off like a beautiful, loud firework. This was a belief system I carried until several months ago. I never thought I’d grow old, or be with another person, because of how “challenging” my experiences were. I found my person, she truly loves me, and together we’re building a big, bright future. I’ve been a fan of Sylvan Esso since their single radio premier, and just caught the last show of their tour the other night from the front of the pit. I danced with a room of heartbroken strangers and felt my bones shake with the bass. I watched pain turn into life with strobing lights and an incense stick up on stage. Thank you for everything, Amelia and Nick. You carried me throughout so much of adulthood. I’ll be forever grateful.
Only 34 likes and one of my favorite songs with an entirely fantastically produced music video. How much more does anyone need to do to make it in the music industry? This song is indelible and I will never forget it. Seriously one of my standalone, favorite songs ever and, I'm so grateful I came across it. Fabulous work.
At first I was a little hesitant to this song just because Radio and Kick Jump Twist are absolute masterpieces. Sylvan Esso went above and beyond my expectations. I'm absolutely blown away! I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
Two years ago I discovered this song and fell in love, only to have a friend of mine of almost my entire life commit suicide soon thereafter for reasons I will never know. The meaning and feeling of this song changed significantly for me after that, but not in a depressing kind of way. I feel like it's almost a tribute to my dear friend who I miss so much. I put it on repeat every now and then to think about him and what could have been. Miss you. Xo
That's beautiful and tragic, all at the same time. I'm so sorry for your loss, but I am glad you're finding the strength to keep him alive in your memories, and in your heart.
I saw ODESZA at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Baltimore, MD last night. I had no idea who you guys were. But I’m glad I went early, your performance was pure bliss and you have a new fan. This song was the highlight of my evening. Thank you
In the most basic sense yes, it is bass with some form of distortion (most likely just a triangle wave oscillator sound to begin with but hard to know). But really it's probably a multi layered bass synth sound. It's likely 2 or 3 completely separate bass synth sounds and from the sound of it they are not always layered in the same way or some kind of after effects were used to emphasize certains notes or transitions. Watch good electronic music artists make their songs and you realize almost no sound you here on a song is just some preset with one effect on it. I own a Roland Gaia synth and it has 3 layers you can individually edit for any sound, some sounds only use one and others use three, each with different effects applied to each one. It's daunting but you realize quickly there is a reason you can't just walk up to a synth and hit a few notes and get good sounds, that's not what anything good you have heard really is. There are plenty of exceptions and some preset are gems but the producer (keyboardist) in her band probably worked that bass track up for hours.
I can make the sound in 5 minutes. it has an LFO on it in the beginning on a LPF, and what sounds like slight pitch modulation from an ADSR. Thats where the wuh wuh wuh comes from. Slight Release. Any old camel phat or saturn will produce that dist, it swings from the sides to the mid. The higher notes sides and the roots in the mid. That being said, designing a sound and putting together an enjoyable song are much, much different. Any real producer who makes pop will tell you that this shit is about spacing : ). Its ALL ABOUT THE FUCKING SPACING RIGHT SYLVAN ESSO ? Love the nostalgic 808 snare in the bg also. Dope
I know I am pretty fuckin late, I was a huge fan of Britney Murphy, watching the doc on hbo bought me here ….this song to me will always make me think of her now 😞….also happy to have found a new talented artist in you sylvan 🙌🏿
FF to 2:50 and catch the Stevie Nicks vibe on the backing vocals. Very nice touch and is the moment this song reaches up above and kisses the sky. This is why we love music.
As someone who spent their entire teens and 20s trying to “flame out” as gloriously as possible in a cavalcade of booze and drugs, I feel like this song should be my anthem now that I’m pushing 40 (oh, and I should probably add that I’ve been sober FOR YEARS).😊
A friend of mine sent this to me as she knows I'm at raging alcoholic. A friend of ours died in a freak skate accident with a whole future and so much potential in front of her. This song hits on so many levels. RIP Lizbeth
The idea and thought process behind this song is incredible. She wasn't planning on writing a love song on this album and just so happen to write a begrudged love song. Not wanting to grow old and die young, she ends up falling in love and now has to wait because shes too in love to leave.
Absolutely so much love. My whole year is made and knowing the new album is coming out makes all the other nasty shit happening right now worth fighting.
ngl, I usually hate when people say "this song is so underrated," but I am just trying to figure out why this song hasn't blown up? I feel like it sounds very accessible and catchy? idk

just the lyrics alone are so moving and romantic... then you add the music and its all too much ! The song is perfection, but I can't help but want someone to remix it with a huge beat drop on the chorus.

Her name is Amelia.

Love Sylvan!
Met my wife right before this song dropped and we went to see them live. It’s like part of our soundtrack.
They are part of the soundtrack for my GF and I too (along with Whitney, Spoon, Ween and the Silver Jews). We haven’t seen Sylvan Esso yet, but we just this morning won the pre-sale lottery for their Red Rocks (CO) show (Summer, 2023).

What? That it is a seriously thought out comment!
You have a very strong knowledge of the english language, don't you!
Trolls!! Go home
She's absolutely the most gorgeous girl ever
My soul is a gymnast performing back flips of joy... Cannot wait for this offering to drop!
I had it all planned out before you met me
Was gonna leave early, so swiftly
Maybe in a fire or crash off a ravine
People would weep, "How tragic, so early"
I was gonna die young
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
I was a firecracker, baby, with something to prove
Now I gotta contend with the living blues
I could've missed it, I never knew
Chain reaction but you're holding the fuse
I was gonna die young
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
Now I gotta wait for you, honey
Oh, I don't mind
I got the fire
Electric light
So high, so wild
It's not like I chose
Not like I tried
But now I gotta wait around and watch you burn so bright
I was gonna die
I had…
Wow.. absolutely powerful and intense!! Thanks for sharing the lyrics💙💜
Thank you thank you thank you!
Thank you so much. The lyrics are important to me.

How did you make yourself feel adequate and worthy of respect and confident enough to get a better life?
Literally one of the best newer artists today. See them live, really great show. They sound better live then even the recordings!
hot. beyond perfect
Some songs are just awesome. This is one of them

That synth melody is soooo sick. It's like an oldschool NES Metroid-era game or something.

its just a bass with distortion on it bud. : )

The lyrics to this are weirdly, morbidly romantic
Romantic in that love defeated her desire to achieve a certain poetic timelessness in an early death.
It's a very happy song
Slaps! 🎶🎶🔥🔥💥💥
