    Shout out to the translator. I don't speak Japanese but it seemed like he made a real effort to actually translate the questions (even the sensitive ones) and facilitate a conversation.

      ​@julianlaustsen1991 take it from someone who just finished a 5x5 four days a week program, I could barely recover and I am on a huge surplus.
      Even when it was like 70% of my 1RM it felt like death. Definitely got some technique and size on my legs, but I'll never run it again it feels like shit.

      Yeah, PEDs open the door to *real* volume. Even when Clarence was at maximum dosage, I don't think he got near the tonnage of the Eastern systems. Iirc front squat volume in Poland destroyed Clarence's knees, which is why his squat looks the way it does.

    5x5 @~80% is brutal. Let alone 5 times a week. LET ALONE with 3 back off 10s at ~50%. LET ALONE with 1 minute rest between the backoffs.
    I would collapse of a fatal case of death by session 3.

      When I was a stupid 22 year old I did the 5x5 with 80-85% 5x a week with pretty minimal time for acclimation to the volume and by the 1.5 month mark I got patellar tendonitis that took 2 years to fully go away 😂

    Interesting he talks about the deeper breath holds. Idk if bodybuilders or weightlifters still practice this but back in the silver era and golden era of bodybuilding, those guys used to train dumbbell pullovers for rib cage expansion and practiced deep breaths -- to the point where they could blow up those thick rubber balloons during strongman competitions. I'd imagine if one could expand their rib cage and lung capacity, they could probably get a squat PR just from that.

    I get what he means by more breath. Was doing front squats today and on my last set of 5 I just didn't think I'd get the last rep so I intentionally squeezed as much air as I could in and the stability it provided was insane. I don't know if its viable for more than one rep though since afterwards I felt like I was gonna pass out lmao

      yeah, breating big is really important when lifting heavy ffor stabilization. when you are stable, you can grind. when you are not, when you start to grind, you just also start to fold and break down instead of being able to transfer the force to the bar.

      By the way this is only when training for weightlifting. If you're training lowbar for powerlifting a large chest is not ideal cause it's harder to brace against the belt.

      @@chrism45 actually with breathing, afaik, you should not only breath to your belly but you should fill up your whole torso with air. you fill air to your belly, lowerback, chest, upperback, everywhere. I do it from bottom to top. And after i breathe, i just basically "push against the closed airway" to create enourmous pressure and then squat. It applies to lowbar too i believe.

      Sometimes I take a few quick breaths between reps, and after my last rep I focus on breathing. It's not just a out getting oxygen, you also need to get the CO2 out.
