Great advice. Most new shooters or those using a red dot think there is a magical shortcut to getting faster at finding the dot/target. Dry fire is such a great training technique and also way way under used by shooters.

I still find irons more reliable when it comes to quickly finding them. And irons are good out to 50 yards easily, so well within the context of USPSA and even more so defensive shootings. So I don't blame you. However it's preference, some people with bad eye sight can't find their irons anymore and they're gonna have to transition to the dot and work on their index, either that or start shooting from the hip like Bob Munden.

I appreciate your content very much. I’m excited to see how competitive shooting evolves when enough people get fed up with the USPSA administration. In the mean time, thank you very much
Consistent master grip and thumbs forward each time put my dot exactly in the middle every time. I struggled a long time until one day it just clicked, you have to grip and present consistently and the dot will just be there, rather than practicing and training to find it quickly, which is what I think most new dot users wind up doing. Finding the dot easily has to be the result of your actions, not the focus of them.

The dryfire advice is obviously correct, but I’ll add that when I really got my grip sorted out it made things better. Another piece of advice is to dryfire odd positions. I see a lot of shooters who are fine when they get to use the normal stance or something similar but are slow as hell when they need to lean or something that doesn’t show up in their dryfire training.

The mental process I used to learn indexing is
I do not think about "i Need to find the dot"
I look at the target and think "i must align the gun/barrel straight to the target" at that point once the gun is aligned, if the dot is not at my eye level it's just a matter of fixing the height of the gun, depending on the mount height. After some training it became automatic

    • @Fryheart
      @Fryheart Год назад

Thinking about "I need to find the dot" usually leads to someone trying to move the head instead of the gun, in my experience.
I think this error is more frequent with people used to shooting at distance with scopes that have an eye relief.

Indexing is very important, I have a RMSC sized dot on my ccw pistol and the window is small enough that it forces you to index and if you stare for the dot its almost impossible because the window is so small so I have to remain target focused and practice indexing constantly

    • @janemccullough3009

Inside of 10 yards the dot is useless. You better be sending rounds from the hip that close, you won’t have time to bring the gun to eye level.
We are defensive shooters, someone will have a weapon out and ready to go before we can even draw. Unless you are a cop

I feel like if you spent time building up your presentation for irons, then you should not take a ton of time to get your presentation with a dot. I have never had an issue getting my dot to show up in standard positions, but when I am on my side or on my back I definitely find myself thinking, "I need to rep this more at home".

There are no shortcuts folks. Put in the practice. Do the work. Do the reps. And once you’re able to find the dot consistently, don’t worry about “pinpoint accuracy” because the dot always “shakes”. You’ll never stop the dot movement. When the dot is on target, take the shot. It’s called a reflex sighting system for a reason. But take his advice here. Basically, just do the work.

It's interesting how motivating a two cent ribbon and bragging rights can be . I remember when the "Press Out" was a popular technique. Is this "drop the dot", or pinky pressure, or co-witness iron sights the Red Dot equivalent? The scary part is a lot of concealed carry and LE only shooters aren't going to put in the time to learn property. Some might go to a two day class and as you said - two weeks of dry fire is the answer - and they are going to learn some technique and think they're good Or they'll watch some insta vid or read about a technique on a forum and try to copy it.

This doesn't make any sense. If both your irons and your dot are perfectly zeroed, when you align your irons it's physically impossible for your red dot to not also be on target no matter what the cowitness height is. There's minute differences from things like parallax but the dot is gonna be there.
If you have the index to shoot tall cowitnessed irons... You have the index to shoot a dot. It's the exact same index. Again, this makes no sense. All you're doing is blocking more of your window.
If you like a higher cowitness rather than a lower one, that's fine. But there is no difference between the index of a dot in the center of your glass vs the index of irons in the center of your glass. Therefore there is no reason to go out and get taller irons to learn the same exact index.
