  • In this episode I return to Loch Thom in the west of Scotland. This was one of my most productive days exploring this stillwater with some stunning brown trout. Float tube (belly boat) fly fishing, although challenging at times it is an an awesome way to explore waters.

    Canny possibly hate a float tube! The best fun you'll ever have on a loch, I love it. The worst bit of it is forcing myself off the water to get home for dinner Douglas! lol

      @@AyrshireAlps very true it can be physically challenging in a strong wind, I think that’s one of the main things people underestimate about the tube. For me it can be mentally challenging, peddling with the fins, casting and talking all at the same time, great for your coordination. I’m so glad my wife doesn’t watch my videos as I can actually do more than one thing at a time😳

    You're really making yourself at home on Loch Thom, and its obviously becoming a succesful venue for you. Great to watch, it all looks so effortless on your part, which shows the importance of technique.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Gordon. It’s a wonderful wee venue, apart from the road being close to the shore in some places, it feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere just love it. The fishing’s pretty good too. The silver butcher in a verity of sizes is certainly worth having in fly box. The bibio is also one of my favourites, works well on many other wild waters👍

      Thanks again for your comments mate very much appreciated. I’ve had a few people say they’re interested in getting a float tube from watching my vids. I think I’ll do a video on a guide to float tube fishing based on my experience since getting as it. I think it’s not for everyone and there’s a few factors you need to consider before jumping in.

    I'm not a huge fan of the belly boat, I feel more comfortable fishing into deeper water (16g lures do that to a man) 😂

      Hi Troj, this time off year and through the summer generally better in the evening/early morning or a dull dreary day.

      @@davidmathieson4280 hi David, nice one mate. I hope you enjoy the float tube pal. I’ve never fished Ardgowan, although I know plenty that have. I’m not that into fishing on heavily stocked fisheries David, Give me 20 small wild brownies any day of the week, rather than a 20lb stocked rainbow.

    Hi Douglas. I’m thinking of getting myself a float tube to explore the lochs around me in Lochaber. How well do you find yours drifts with the wind like you would from a boat? It’s hard to tell from the videos if you’re holding your position using the fins or just drifting along.

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  Месяц назад

      @@adrianmowat Hi Adrian, the float tube drifts well but it also holds position well in the wind. The oars certainly helps. When the wind is quite strong I keep my left oar out as the wind can catch the tube which swings it round. One swipe of the oar prevents it from swinging and you can keep the bow into the wind and carry on your drift line.

    • @adrianmowat
      @adrianmowat Месяц назад

      @@PiscatorUK-Fishingawesome. Thanks. I was up around a loch near me yesterday with a lot of reeds and vegetation in the margins and I was thinking how good it would be to drift along the edges and use the fins to hold my position in the more promising areas.

      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  Месяц назад

      @@adrianmowat I’ll be honest with you, when I first tried it I thought this is definitely harder than it looks but it has grown on me and after a few times using it, it’s certainly got easier and I wouldn’t part with it now.

    Some good fish do you ever eat brown trout if theirs plenty of wilds in the local river I will keep the odd one cuz I think they're nice eating but some people disagree, also butcher fly is the one I've been most successful with believe it or not its my start off fly or if I start with something else and no takes ill put a butcher on usually turns things round.

    Hi Douglas, im thinking of buying a permit for this loch its fairly close to me. Is there much scope for bank fishing and wading? Great video cheers for sharing mate 👍

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  Месяц назад

      @@Aboutaweekago1787 thanks buddy, this loch is predominantly fished from the bank. I’ve been told that wading is not really necessary but I’ve seen a couple of angles wading near the island. If you live local it’s certainly worth trying even just for the small wild brown trout sport, with a good chance of some thumping stockies which as you’ve seen are in great condition.
