Such an interesting take on the after life. Just another day in the office, only you can’t escape the office until someone young and keen to impress comes along to replace you, inadvertently freeing you from the torment. So not so different from the office really.

He wasn't waiting for his replacement. He was retiring that day, regardless of if Jim stayed or moved on. Jim just happened to be his last client; a bit of a narcissist who was so caught up in the things he wanted, he didn't care he was inconveniencing and delaying his case from retirement. When Jim says he's not doing anything until he finds out his wife is okay, the soon-to-be retiree breaks protocol and tells Jim about his wife. When Jim says he's never had a cheesesteak, the guy gets him a cheesesteak hoping Jim will be satisfied by the experience and finish the paperwork so the caseworker can finally get done with work. Not to mention, he was already on his way to leave before he even bothered to ask what Jim had chosen, and seemed surprised that he'd chosen to stay. And narcissistic Jim says, oh you taught me a lesson about helping. The old man says, you're not that important, meaning it didn't matter if Jim had stayed or left.

A few weeks ago I was in the ER for a medication issue and I felt eerily close to dying. I was cold, the room was dimming, sound was getting quieter, and everything seemed slow. I remember thinking maybe I just keep living in this moment, in this hospital, for eternity -- maybe that's what death is, I thought. Maybe it just feels like living forever in a Roy Andersson scene with its relative stillness, mundaneness, and maybe humorousness in a subtle, dark way. There was something absurd about it all. There was a strange calm and a sadness too, hoping that there would be some afterlife, or some reincarnation for me to see my friends and family again. And then i was fine. But I will never be quite the same again because of that feeling. I enjoyed this take on the mundaneness of the afterlife with some palpable sadness and some comedy. It reminded me of my experience some.

  • @ifrahyousaf968
    @ifrahyousaf968 7 месяцев назад +24

Symbolism explained: we all have our own views on afterlife. That is why the man is unable to accpet that he is dead when he landed in a mundane, office-like setting waiting in a queue. He is stuck because of the mistakes he made in his life: he was a narcissist. Hence to atone for it, he is made to help people.
The person who he will replace is also waiting for 600 years for someone who will request a cheese steak.
He accepts the offer. Because he is horrified by the other option: to go into oblivion (when he tries to run away and opens the door, this is what he faces: darkness and nothingness).
He is a narcissist so he will never accept being nothing. He wants to matter and do something. Hence he takes the position. There is a bag which he opens at the end. This will be his offering (like cheese steak was for the person who retired) he will wait for hundreds of years for someone to arrive and ask for it. Then only can he leave.
The person who retired says that he "did not choose". 600 years ago he received a similar contract and he did not choose. It took him 600 years to make a decision: he chose to go into oblivion. He was such a bad person that even after being made to help people for 600 years, he hates this work. He left without even greeting his collegeas for the last time.
    From one narcissist to another.

Instead of faxes they used some kind of tube delivery system and when Mr Schafer chose he made the decision to go back with all these grand plans of changing things in his life. Of course it doesn't work like that and he went back to the moment of birth and lived his life exactly the same way on yeah to have the exact same meeting in purgatory, yet again, upon his death. And yes, I'm sure it was Stephen King. Great short, thanks for making it.

Much like Mr. Shaeffer's Philly Cheese Steak, it's something you may not have tried, but this existential waiting room, will surround your initial thoughts with confusion, hopefully all will become clear in the fullness of time.

From Collins Dictionary: You use 'existential' fear, anxiety & other feelings that are caused by thinking about human existence & death.

Phillips cheese steak must be pretty good! I hope he gets to eat one between each of his customers from the waiting room. I knew it fax technology is here to stay for a long time! 😁😁😁😁

    DIVE IN PLOT TWIST
[11:34] Jim Schafer, the newest purgatory interviewer, dives into a boutique gift sack decorated with pink and gold hearts and pink ribbon handles. Guess what's inside?
Maybe some Godiva Chocolates for his loyal wife.

Your film was amazing! 🎉 What kind of camera and equipment did you use?

@@RohitBSrivastava thank you for watching and commenting! We used an old Arri Alexa and some anamorphic lenses. But honestly it doesn’t matter what you use - a better question is ‘how’ you use it! Especially lighting.

What an excellent after-death concept. Although I would sign up for reincarnation. Just like I did last time. Thanks for a wonderful movie.
