This is the most lovable prison movie I've ever watched.
Good warden, change of behavior, change of life, and no prison breaks...
Gee, so wonderful to see Jhonny from a bad tempered inmate turned into a helpful prison guard...
    Such an inspiring story

A couple others have spotted this, but the new prison warden was played by Milburn Stone, who was "Doc" on Gunsmoke. I actually did not recognize his face, but rather his voice. I finally figured out who he was about 15 minutes from the end.

Wayne, the soon-to-be-executed prisoner, (Paul McVey), looked much younger,
just 4 years before this, when he had a much bigger role in BURIED ALIVE! In it,
he played a prison warden; and it co-starred two top-notch character actors of
their day: Wheeler Oakman and George Pembroke.

Okay. I'm studying this actor's face and I definitely see Slyvester Stallone as a young, leaner version of himself. Look at the facial similarities, especially the eyes. As for his cellmate, some Burt Lancaster facial similarities as well. Anyway, back to the matinee!

This has one of the coolest 'art deco sounding' musical intro themes. The same music was used for the movie serial 'Brenda Starr', which also featured Joan Woodbury. The music has a deceptive tonality, sounding 'minor' but not just in an ordinary way. These little touches add to the success of many B-movies.

A real convict turned into a guard overnight and sent to work in the same place that he was just released from. Great idea. It would work really well until you got killed. This could take as long as about five minutes.
