- The Vice Kings trace their roots back to the late '60s to the early '70s (implied by a photo held by Benjamin King gang leader/founder of Vice King's), back in Sunnyvale Gardens to counterbalance the power of Los Carnales. They were the only ones to successfully fight back and triumph against them, who were at the time an unstoppable force controlling the entire city. Los Carnales back in those days, further back before 3rd Streets founding era, dominated every neighborhood in the Southern Island. They were muscling their way into unclaimed areas on the West Side at the time, but Sunnyvale had neighborhood street toughs.

Interesting thing is that he was originally going to reprise his role as Benjamin King in Saints Row 4, but sadly passed away before the game came out, but you can still hear him singing along Just A Friend by Biz Markie along with the others in the end credits.

You could see where they were going with it though. Originally, Saints Row just wanted to be a GTA knock-off with its own identity to distinguish it from those games. The original GTA games were silly, so Saints Row decided to be more serious with a grittier tone (then again, it was 2006, everything was trying to be gritty and serious back then).
Later on, with SR3/SR4, GTA was trying to be gritty and serious, so Saints Row tried to be quirky and funny.

Sure, fans complained about SR3-4, but those games were still very successful and appealed to a much wider audience without sacrificing all of it's unique identity.

yeah it's a good game, it's cool how you can reload your weapon WHILE the sprint, i also like how you can make items fly away by kicking those and the audio player is cool too! i'm glad one of my friends found it for me 2 years ago.

With this in mind Julius was in a bad spot since he was dealing with a genuine psychopath. Julius wanted to help Stilwater even when things turned sour towards the end.
God I love this series. Rarely I've seen a game where you play as a genuine villian while your enemy is a anti hero of sorts.

In a perfect world, we'd have a "Stilwater Saga" remake that combines SR+SR2 into one continuous story. Sure, Stilwater would have to undergo a transformation halfway through, but a remaster of the city et al is painfully overdue.

...My favorite and most interesting gang in the original Saint's Row (if not the whole series, where it shares that distinction with Sons of Samedi & Morningstar from Saint's Row 2 & 3, respectively). Much of what makes the Vice Kings so cool is the fact that they are clearly based on both the longstanding real-life Vice Lords gang based in Chicago and Death Row Records, with Benjamin King representing Suge Knight, Aisha representing 2Pac (with the whole 'faking her death' storyline, which was/still is a popular fan theory about 'Pac, as well as the 'memorial box-set' of Aisha's music King released after she 'died (which is also a nod to the late R&B singer Aaliyah),' and all of Aisha's music that was released after she 'died [As referenced in Saint's Row 2 & 3],' again just like 2Pac), Warren Williams representing Kurupt or Dr. Dre, Tony representing the many Blood-affiliated enforcers Suge kept in his employ to, uh, keep his artists in line, and Tanya representing both singer Michel'le (who had relationships & children with both Suge and Dr. Dre) and the white woman who currently owns Death Row & its assets. King walking away from the Gang and label he built in the end also parallels Suge's life after he lost the label back in the late 2000s.

Simple (and yes I know this is two years late), it's a ploy to get the Saints to try and rescue Johnny, so they could lure them into one spot and bag the lot of them. King just severely underestimated the Playa. In theory, pretty standard procedure, you just have plot armour in this game so of course you're able to take on an entire building full of VK's plus one of their top Lieutenants

I would've liked to see some on screen conflict between the VK's and Los Carnales. It wouldve added some more immersion to the fact that each gang is on a suicide war against three other factions. After all, Ben King formed the Vice Kings to make a strong stand against the Carnales' bullying of the youth in Sunnyvale.
