    This is an absolutely fantastic video! it is really helpful since I am in the VERY SLOW process of building a new wardrobe. I am so sick of having "nothing" to wear, I am sick of hurting the planet with bad shopping habits like I did in my very early 20's, and frankly I don't want to spend a bunch of money on clothes that will make me feel bad and guilty (since I only wore it once, or so) and now its out of style. I have been having a capsule wardrobe for 7 months now and not adding anything to it unless it is the right piece.

    I feel like I buy new clothes every month. I feel like my style is so multifaceted and I’m still growing finding my style has been a battle. I feel like my style priorities all fight each other but somehow that makes sense to me. I plan on clearing my closet based on this and hopefully it goes well!!

    I've never really been into fashion, but these last couple of years with it being so all over social media, I'd definitely got influenced and purchased things for the first time that just ended up only wore once or just a few times before I realized it just didn't work out.
    Things I figured out for myself to figure out if it's something I'm really into, or just think I do;
    - If I'm able to see myself actually wear this in daily wear more then once, and am I able to combine it with more clothes I already have. Can I make more outfits out of it, or just that one.
    - Is it this piece of clothing, or is it a character/costume that I like. Maybe it's because I got interested in clothes due to costumes, but I see the same with trends; it sell you this idea that if you wear this you'll feel 'cool', or 'sexy', 'countryside girly', 'I'll finally go to the gym', 'edgy', or 'I can deal with the whole world'. Look for the feeling you feel the clothes give you, and if that's something were you're you, or you just want to be someone else.
    - Similar, to the last, am I interested in this piece of clothing, or the scenario it sells me, like wanting the idea of being outside in Italy or Paris in the summer, or on a luxury boat, or inside with a warm sweater in autumn, or walking down the red carpet with everyone looking at you.
    For me it's especially the being inside in autumn with a warm cup of tea that made me buy too many wool sweaters and scarfs, some I almost never wear because it's doesn't get that cold where I live so I'm already lucky to wear one wool sweater once a year, let alone get four others gain dust in the closet. It took me a while to realize what I wanted was the cold weather, the enjoyment of seeing the leaves fall and drink tea and hot chocolate, not the wool sweaters.
    I've definitely realized that some places used in pictures definitely influence me in thinking I want something, while what I really want is to be in the place the picture sells me.

    right now im having the opposite problem to what you described. i look too many different things and styles, without actually knowing what it is that i like, that i resort to underbuying. i have too many basics and not enough statement pieces, if any

  • @angelatewson8202

    Good video. You articulated well what I have been doing (with some mistakes) for decades, which is find and buy trends with elements I always liked. Some years I will buy very little and others much more, simply because the trends don't fit/fit with my aesthetics. I also had practicality and a limited budget to contend with, which in many ways makes you less likely to buy trends which are too out there, even if you like some of them. Decent materials and quality are another thing to look for. It's not worth all the searching if after a couple of washes, it's unwearable and scruffy.
    Another tip is to know what colours you are drawn to and look good in, then start rejecting most clothing that does not come in those colours, unless you love a particular shade in a bag, top or smaller piece that you can incorporate as an accent.
    Neutrals (creams, whites, browns, taupes, olives) are the basis of my wardrobe basics. I also love blues, white, sometimes violet and yellow, and I stick mostly to those. I like fuller sleeves with cuffs, dislike dangly sleeves etc. Think about what you find most comfortable to wear as well. If you feel confident and at ease in it, you will wear it well. If you have any doubts, walk away and think about it more. How will you wear it and with what? How often? How long? How many other things you own can you wear it with? If you buy separates, be careful you can match them with things you already have, or find matching items at the time, when shades are matching and similar.
    When you go to buy clothes, you can't avoid 'trends' unless you buy vintage. Before buying, look at what is in shops, make a shortlist of styles you love, and reject most. It helps if you are fussy anyway!

    Hey there! I wanted to ask how you can best determine your style priorities when there are certain elements that may similar across certain styles you like but different parts of those aesthetics that you don’t like. For example, I am drawn to very “elegant” looking tops/dresses as I would describe them. This includes sheer/flowy fabric that is very feminine, tops with puffy/flowy sleeves, some waist definition, etc. I also like oversized tops and wider/straight legged pants. All of things however are part of quite a few different style priorities, yet you mentioned that you may not consider one style priority to be something you have yet it still could be. How then can you know which style priorities you have? I would greatly appreciate some clarification!

    • @elliejeanroyden
      @elliejeanroyden  2 года назад +16

      This is a great question! What you have just described are more to do with what shapes you are drawn to rather than the feel you are aiming for. You can create elegance through wide leg pants, straight leg pants, wide sleeves, fitted sleeves etc. The style part is less about which clothes you already like to wear, but rather the person that you are. If you consider yourself to be a professional person both at and out of work, this might be something you want to convey with your style. You might do that in a myriad of ways, the Pinterest board I have shows only a few examples.
      I hope this helps to clarify things. Basically, don't choose your style priorities based on the shapes of clothes that are in the board, but rather the impression that you get. How you then execute that is up to interpretation!

    You don't need to be a wardrobe trendsetter, just mixed match your clothes that suits your styles, body and age. You can save money by not buying unnecessary trending clothes. It is imporrant to buy clothes that won't be easily or (almost) never be outfashioned. 🥰

    I only buy trends that suit my body type and are practical and then I wear them for the next ten years😂 So to me they aren't really trends. But yeah that way I am not even remotely tempted to buy the outlandish trends that only last for one season or less. I also make my own clothes with both modern patterns and the more timless looking patterns from my mothers 90s sewing magazines and currently also dipping my toes into sewing even older vintage styles. So being super trendy never was my concern at all.

    Advice from a video editor: you should be filming yourself from a bit further. Because you're all over the frame and constantly moving so it's rather hard to focus on you. The viewer is always distracted from what you saying by your movement.
    If you stand a bit further, your movement won't be as noticable and less distracting) cheers)

  • @Carrie-sgda

    Basics should be very different to each individual in my opinion. Basics shoukd be items you buy that you love and work well with at least most of your wardrobe . Whether that be patterned , textured, brights , nudes, pastels or darks it doesnt matter. There are items i bought 12.5 years ago that i still wear. Your style should be timeless and should never go through drastic changes. When we age, we may become more modest and comfortable but our asthetic should stay some what the same vibe.

    It really bothers me how much the shops follow trends - especially when those trends don't suit my body type or style. In this day and age of body type systems and widespread advice, it really shouldn't be that hard to buy cuts of clothes that are right for my body type.

  • @metalmiauws

    hehehe that is not a corset, that is a flimsy (cute, not arguing with that) underwear bustiere type of top. A real corset has steel or spiral boning and is thick but if well made very comfy. If you have a waist cinching one that will not be of cheer fabric, that will rip, it can have lace over the fabric. Is something completely different than what you have here. But then again a real corset is not for every day clothes, but more of a lifestyle (gothic for example).
    Personally I do like to mix different styles (tule skirt and (fake)leather jacket can go really nice together!) but it has to fit together indeed. Do like your way of explaining :)
