- "Diva" is a short documentary directed by Northwestern University student filmmakers, Ashley Gates, Dan Q. Tham and Yoonie Yang. "Diva" explores the life mission of the sassy and incomparable Rae Lewis-Thornton, a Chicago-based AIDS activist. As Rae continues to spread her message of hope and perseverance through her use of social media, she prepares to tell her story in the biggest way yet: as part of an emotional commencement speech at her alma mater.

I remember reading that issue of Essence magazine when she was on the cover I believe it was 1994. Mrs. Lewis-Thornton is still holding it down. In spite of her illness, she keeps on doing her thing. I love the zeal that she has it's very inspiring. God bless 👍👍👍
i cried watching her college speech. whenever i think I can't make it through and get my graduate degree, I'll watch this back for affirmation that there is no excuse. If she can do it given her life circumstances, I certainly can as well.

Started crying at 8:25 , powerful documentary . I can just imagine living in the 90's with HIV and the utter despair the young people with HIV/AIDS felt. It killed young people or ruins their lives today, that's the tragedy

This woman is AMAZING
When I was 11, I saw an AIDS documentary in which a young lady was talking about her AIDS and wasting. It was 1995-96. I remember thinking that she would be dead ssoon, but I was VERY wrong! 15 years later, I read about Rae Lewis Thornton, looked her up, and realized that Rae and that young lady were one in the same. She has a lot to be proud of.
I love her strength and faith!! These are the type of people who make a difference in this troubled world; and even though she has AIDS, her voice is really impacting so many people!!

I am so inspired by you! It is my goal to see the end of this epidemic! I want to work as hard as I can to not make it on to the AIDS Quilt, but if I do I want to be able to say just as you did that I gave AIDS a run for its money! Its not easy to live with but we find a way to wake up every morning, take our meds, and greet the day with whatever challenge may come our way.

I have always had a love hate relationship with the ARTs. Though my doctors disagree, I fervently believe the reason my body has not changed after 20 years is because I take "medication holidays" from the meds. Though the ARTs are life saving & u=u, the meds are toxic. I believe it's individual choice.

Wonder did she get herpes and hiv at the same time? Or could herpes be hiv?
Herpes and HIV are two different viruses that have both been isolated in people without the other present; they definitely aren’t the same. It’s certainly possible she’s got herpes from the partner who gave her HIV, but it’s also possible she got the virus when she was raped or from another previous partner. Hell, she could actually even be taking antiviral pills for oral herpes which can be transmitted just by sharing a drink with someone else or kissing. I’m sure she’s done these two things since contracting HIV.
