  • A brief introduction to polishing 'cold cast' Aluminium powder when mixed with polyester resin.
Polishing this way by hand is great for smaller castings but on larger pieces it is quicker and more efficient to polish mechanically using a polishing compound on a buffing mop mounted to a drill or bench wheel.

Thanks so much for making this. I really wanted to see how this was done and how it looks.

it looks very much like pure aluminium. great video.

The trick is using the right amount of aluminium powder, the more you can physically add to the resin the better the final result.

+Tiranti I was wondering about using iron or iron oxide? to build a toroid for a transformer. that is how I came across this channel. but I am also interested in other stuff to. I also would like to know more about mould making. what is a good material for a mould . and where to get the supply's. I figure it must be ordered. I do t think there is a local supply. there is nothing here where I live. and does this process work equally well with fine sand to simulate stone? what type resin is used? thanks

The resin used in this example is a multi purpose polyester (fibreglass) resin, the mould used to create it was a silicone rubber of which we supply many but shipping outside the UK is tricky. Iron powder can be added for weight or finish (rust) in resins quite easily. stone as powder, sand, chips or larger aggregate can also be added, and example of marble powder can be seen here (www.tiranti.co.uk/EdgeImpactShop/product.php?Product=1419&Content=Marble+Filler+Powder+kg+Casting+General+Fillers+Marble+Filler+Powder) cheers

+Tiranti well I live in the US I looked on eBay for materials . I think I found everything. but I don't really like buying on eBay. unless its from a actual business and I can contact then outside eBay. so you don't ship to the US. or is it better to order from someone inside the country? I'm guessing I need a minimum of 20lbs of iron for a electrical toroid. in guessing its not electrically conductive. but highly magnetic. am I right? since each piece of powder is coated in resin right? thanks for replying and I'm gonna check out more of your videos. thanks

Assuming the iron is bound within the resin and coated it should not become conductive, you could try the complete sculptor in NY city, they seem to have everything you would need. shop.sculpt.com/
