I’ve grown very suspicious of hype over makeup products. There are so many variables that contribute to the impression of extreme pleasure (including needing to influence viewers to buy things as part of a job), but personal differences are huge. Many viral products don’t work for me, so I’m not easily convinced anymore that I really “need” something.
It's definitely a good mindset to have because makeup is so incredibly hyped up these days. I even feel like my videos and content don't do as well if I'm not focusing on the brand new hyped up products because it seems like it's all anyone wants to see these days. It's nice to hear that someone isn't only interested in the viral launches!
Ahhh. I started purchasing makeup around the viral UD Naked craze and their eyeshadow primer potion. I remember thinking $49 for a palette was so expensive. Thinking about the price jump makes me flinch 😢. I recently bought the ND I need a nude palette but it was on sale for $55ish around the time. I have not bought another eyeshadow palette since because like you, I have also come to the realization that I have too much eyeshadow and don’t need more. I definitely appreciate de-influencing videos and product reviews that talk about the pros and cons. I’ve been really making strides to limit how much makeup I purchase.
Honestly it’s just crazy to think about the difference. 😭 I remember saving and splurging on my first Naked palette and even feeling a little bit of guilt at spend so much and now every brand is launching $70 palettes. I’ve cut back so much because so many palettes end up creating such similar looks. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the topic!
Thanks for a fun video. I don't know why but I love hearing about over hyped makeup. I guess it's because it makes me feel like I'm not missing out as much. I've been on a low buy because my collection is out of control and I always feel like I'm missing out and this helps. Lol hope you're doing well! 💕
I understand! I’m always curious to hear about which products people think are overhyped and overrated too! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch. 🥰
I have to agree with you on the Fenty concealer, I swatched it in store, and I knew immediately it wasn’t as hydrating as they claimed…That stuff sucked the moisture outta my hand in 2 seconds😂😂I’ve too too a step back on over hyped makeup as well, I’m just not buying into it or actually buying makeup in general right now..Loving what I already have is key right now!
Right?! That’s exactly how I feel about it! I’ve been testing out their new foundation and it’s definitely better but I’m still not sold on it yet. It feels really good to use older and well loved favorites! I’ve rediscovered some older favorites lately and it’s been nice working them back into my routine.
@@AndreaMatillano yes exactly!! I’ve been hearing a lot about their new foundation, as expected..Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this one! It’s crazy how we put products on the back shelf even though we love them to try things we know or pretty much know won’t work on us…I’ve been really working on that this year, not buying things I know won’t work or I just wouldn’t use on a daily basis!
I haven’t gotten any of these products for the reason of being talked about it too much! I have trust issues now days with all these beauty filters. This is the only channel I take recommendations from because it’s real!!
I’m starting to feel like that more and more. I’ve been buying the Tower 28 mascara and as much as I love it, it dries out SO fast. So I feel like I’m flying through it and having to repurchase it more often. There are just so many good drugstore mascaras.
I'm downloading that app! I hate Sephora reviews people complain about there rather than giving any information about the products. I really need thoughtful reviews (good and bad).
I agree the negative reviews don’t tend to be super helpful. I also feel like Sephora has been flooded with incentivized reviews lately so I feel like I never get the full picture! Iris really is a great option for well-rounded reviews. I hope you love it!
This wasn’t a complaint but I saw looking up reviews on the new sol dejanero summer sprays and one review was “this is soooo amazing and I haven’t even smelled it yet” and gave 5 stars. How is that a review!? So annoying.
I’d love a video discussing plumping gloss pens like you mentioned! Your lip oil video was very well made, I especially appreciated the price & price per oz comparison. Helped me find a new go to product 😊
I love the Haus labs. I’ve never found a foundation that truly blurs my pores but also gives me the hydration I need. Plus Haus labs lasts really well for me
I love makeup reviews but I don’t buy high end makeup except a foundation for special occasions and creamy lipsticks. I’ve sampled quite a few products in Sephora though. For most makeup days I’ve found so many drugstore products that perform amazingly well without my having to spend a fortune. Eye makeup and blushes particularly aren’t worth spending extra for and I don’t sculpt or bronze much. If I’m going to splurge, it’s going to be on skin care products.
Absolutely agree with your critique of the Haus Labs foundation, pros & cons. I found that it showed texture unless I applied it with a sponge. I think less is more with this foundation and it's overpriced.
Unpopular opinion: I suspect that most high end eyeshadow palettes are overhyped. I just bought my first two: ND Retro Glam and O/S Wicked. I think I expected angels to sing, the goddesses of blendability to come down, and the demon of fallout to be banished forever. Instead they were ….. good. I liked the color stories. They performed well. But like, I’m not sure the cost versus colorpop or BH cosmetics is all that justified. (I’m not even going to discuss Urban Decay Wild Greens, everyone thought that performed poorly which was sad, colors were pretty).
So I haven’t used the huda beauty pressed powder but I did see a short on Monica Ravichandran’s channel saying that it wasn’t actually meant to be used as a setting powder but as a brightening powder to help shape the face. Maybe you would like it better that way?
I was so disappointed in the Huda pressed powder. I bought it too thinking it was as great as the loose. It looked terrible on me as well. My makeup was a mess by the end of the day! It even looked terrible when I used it as a touch up! Very disappointing
I'm so glad you called out the Haus Labs foundation. It just wears off so fast on me, and I don't think it's great at covering dark spots that mature women have. I was really disappointed. I'm a teacher and I need my makeup to stay on all day!
So frustrating! 😭 I understand because I really do prefer for my foundation to stay on all day. You might like the Catrice True Skin foundation! It’s on their website or Amazon and I find that it lasts super well on my skin and has nice coverage.
@AndreaMatillano I've been meaning to try that. I discovered the Shiseido Radiant Lifting Foundation when I was still having to wear a mask all day, and that one is very reliable. The most reliable one I have is Hourglass Ambient. I wear that on my longest days, like Back to School Night. Double wear, too.
One product that got super hyped, and it influenced me to purchase, was the KVD Good Apple Foundation and it was terrible! It looked heavy, cakey and wore terrible on me. Plus, it's not cheap!
I love the Nars cream bronzer. I’m fair to light and I wear the shade Laguna 01. It’s not as pigmented as the MUR cream bronzer. I like it because it’s not orange and it practically blends itself. 😊
@AndreaMatillano I have medium COOL toned skin and the Nars cream bronzer in 01 is perfection for me. Not orange at all. I can't wear any other Nars bronzer because they pull too warm orangey on me. And as @juliewells4282 said, it does practically blend itself. The MUR cream bronzer pulled green on my skin tone. So weird.
I finally picked up the mini version of the huda beauty loose powder that I can’t wait to try. I do have the haus labs foundation and I too feel like it’s very trail and error for me, I feel like less is more with that foundation.
I absolutely love the Fenty concealer, I even bought a second shade! I’ve got dryish under eyes and I find the formula to be hydrating leaning normal, it stays in place even without powder. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 💕
Not gonna lie, I bought so much makeup because it was over hyped! Soooo much!!! Now I prefer high end, but I make more informed decisions. I don't buy into the hype too much. Once in a while I will see something hyped up that I need it. Lol. Like the new ysl bronzer. I love it cause it looks like the purse. Lol. I stopped buying eyeshadow pallettes completely. I gave 90% to my daughters and I kept the most likely ones I'd use. Ive been more about skincare and a more natural look. 😊
I actually returned the I Need A Nude pallet. I was underwhelmed with it, especially considering the cost. It didn't show up, it faded away after a few hours. My skin tone is similar to yours but mine is darker. So many people seem to love that pallet
That’s really frustrating! It’s too expensive for it to fade away and not show up on your skin tone. Have you seen the new gold palette? Do you think you will grab that one?
I really like my lipsticks and glosses from Red Apple Lipstick. For those of us who suffer from allergies and sensitivities, these products are gluten, corn and soy free and are great. I love the lipstick in Audrey and their gloss on Cabernet. It’s a great brand and they also have mascara, eyeshadow and blush. Another great crème shadow are the ones from RMS…for me they last and are so easy to put on….but a bit up there in price at $29 each.
Stick foundations: they contain something to hold them solid, usually waxes and/or clay, and don't look good on anybody. Overhyped is anything makeup with "skincare" that most don't read the label for (assuming the actives are disclosed on the label, which they often aren't). Specifically overhyped is hyaluronic acid. I've burned my skin on that ingredient. It's still an acid. If you use other actives, plus this, you are overdoing it and wrecking your skin barrier.
Loved the video! I know everyone and their cousin loved the Natasha Denona HD Concealer but I hated how it looked on me. I didn’t get the hype because it didn’t work for me. Happy for everyone it did work for! I just had to keep searching for a concealer that worked for me 😀
Ok I'm gonna say it..... y'all don't come for me. But Natasha Denona is exponentially overhyped. Case in point her latest gold palette. If tarte had released that palette they would've been slaughtered! Look at tarte doing all neutrals again blah blah blah. I;ve brought this up to you but I think you would looooove Indi eyeshadows. Try Ace Beaute, Bella beaute bar, Lethal, Adept. I could go on and on!
Haha that is definitely true! It’s interesting how some brands get a pass for doing the same thing like Natasha Denona and Pat McGrath but other brands receive so much criticism like Urban Decay and Tarte! I’ve been putting together a list of indie brands that I want to try. I just ordered from Coloured Raine and I can’t wait to try more brands!
I have not bought any of these, although I never get swayed by hyped stuff. I was always the type to research products themselves and get what I like, and I often buy products released ages ago rather than new releases
I love the Nyx clicky lip pens. I've only tried just that one because I, too, can't justify spending over $30 for one lip product. Also I'm kinda' on the fence about the Patrick Ta blush duo. I've only had mine a week or two, so not sure how I feel about it. The color I got doesn't really look like the shade on Sephora's website. I refuse to spend $70 on an eyeshadow palette.
I would say the Haus Labs foundation tends to pull kind of oily looking on me (I have really dry skin). I wish I could skip a powder with it, but I really can’t. I really do love it though- I managed to snag a near perfect shade match online, which I feel like sways my opinion. I’ve never had a shade match so close, even being matched to MAC, Make Up For Ever, and other foundations at Sephora and Ulta. A bad shade match really affects how you see a product.
Same exact impressions. I expected the Huda pressed powder to be good bc the loose is but it was so bad I returned it. The Patrick Ta contour also bad. I wasn't sure if it was just the fact I bought the new Too Faced contour the same time which I loved and it's so much better that maybe I was just comparing but nope it's bad and there is no pigment I wish I had returned it
@@AndreaMatillano thank you for doing this review so others can see. Even though since I tried these I've seen other reviews on YT saying the exact same things, for some reason these got great reviews on Sephora which were so misleading to me. Please lmk if you know of a good pressed powder. I am still searching since Too Faced discontinued the one I loved which was perfect for my oily textured skin.
Agreed! It gives me Bath and Body Works vibes from high school. They don’t even last as long as Bath and Body Works. It’s very cheap appearing too. If I’m going to spend money I’m going to get perfume.
I've watched different people show face primers on their channels...I've bought them and tried them, then ended up throwing them all away...none of them worked the way they claimed and went on about. It's "buyer beware". I watched a content creator show her declutter on her makeup and as she went through alot of tube make-up one had exploded and was popped open. It was a face product from Hourglass! It even made her wonder...WTH? That was scary to see. The fact that she hadn't had it for years either. In all my years, I've never seen a tube of make-up do that. 😳🥴
That's so strange! I wonder what caused it. It reminds me of when a lot of people were open their Melt eyeshadow palettes to find that some of the eyeshadows had exploded and gotten all over the palette.
I completely agree with you on the haus labs foundation. I honestly don’t love it, it gets really greasy on me and it’s not smoothing at all like you said. I will use it up and then not repurchase
I agree. I definitely don’t plan on repurchasing it either. The shade I have is too dark for me so for a little while I was thinking about getting a lighter shade, but I don’t like the formula enough to spend the money on it again! 😭
I agree with you completely on everything. I own almost all those products except Hourglass lippies. I love their bullet lipsticks but never purchased these. Thank you for your review.
I have been buying smaller eyeshadow palettes. I do enjoy my PT bronzer because it is light It’s good for my mature skin. I do want to get a blush one. Always enjoy video
I’m definitely a fan of smaller palettes too! I feel like they are less overwhelming and larger palettes are so expensive these days. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! 💗
I like the Haus Labs foundation, but it can be a little finicky. I look cakey when I use too much and you can feel it on the skin. Have to use only half a pump, but I still usually just use the elf halo glow as foundation and maybe a light tinted moisturizer.
I confess--I am a sucker for those Hourglass lip balms. The formula is so luxurious--they look and feel great on the lips (the HG lipsticks are also amazing). I did buy the NYX and colour pop versions as well--they are nice, affordable and I like them too. But, nothing measures up to that Hourglass.....
I feel the same about the hourglass lip gloss and the haus labs foundation. I don’t get the hype. And I’m very selective when I buy makeup so it bothers me when I buy these products and they are just ok. This is why I trust your judgement. You take everything into account.
That means so much to me, thank you for watching my videos! It really is frustrating when you try a product that just ends up being okay, especially with a higher end price tag.
I think the Natasha Denona palettes are overhyped. Her color stories are some of my absolute favorites, but I cannot get her shadows to stay on my eyes no matter how I prep them.
In today’s beauty industry, most products, drugstore brands or luxury, high-end lines, products are generally well-made. And to be honest, make up has gotten so innovative and fun compared to what it used to be 20 years ago, That it makes sense that these products would appeal to a wide range of consumers. It’s only a matter of time before a popular influencer falls in love with a product, and said product is now viral. People are not even taking the time to look into how that product might work for them, And they’re rushing into buying a product because they want it to possibly help them go viral too. And when that viral product doesn’t meet everyone’s expectations, which it won’t, it goes from being decent product to “over hyped” and “don’t buy that, buy this instead.” At some point brands are going to start saying, “Hey look, we’re going to stop putting so much effort into creating products that are fun and innovative, while at the same time trying to give consumers everything they’re asking for, whether that be, “clean” “cruelty free” “no dyes” “vegan” “talc free” “skin like finish” etc. if you can appreciate how much work goes into trying to give you everything you want.”
HAUS labs foundation is the one product I wouldn't call overhyped. It is literally the BEST I have ever tried, my single favorite makeup product of any category. Ethereal Eyes is my second most prized product. I respect everyone's experiences; just WISH everyone could experience what I do with those!
Ahhh yes such a good way to put it! That's how I feel when I rave about some of my favorites too. When you have an amazing experience you want everyone to feel that too!
Hahah not the Patrick Ta bronzer! I actually LOVE it and the brush and it wasn’t even on my radar but I was interested cause I love a cream bronzer duo. On me it looks good but to each their own. 💜
The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Pressed Powder is expensive but that's a really good alternative because I feel like it does everything the Huda one claims to do! That being said, the Flower Beauty Light Illusion is an amazing alternative and it's more affordable!
Do you have an iPhone? It’s currently only available for Apple but they said are planning on making an Android version so I will definitely keep you posted once it’s available! 💗
Personally i find the elf sunscreen to be overhyped. It looks nice and glowy but stings my watery eyes and then they're a mess! So im just using that on my body until i use it up. For the face, Korean sunscreens are where it's at for me!
Oh that’s the worst! I’ve tried a few sunscreens that burn the eyes and it’s seriously the worst feeling. I love the Heimish Artless Glow Base! I think it’s the first Korean sunscreen I tried and it really is gorgeous.
I have to shop smart and so many products are over hyped. Like the red cushion foundation from tier tier (spelling) ?? They bought someone a luxury handbag , that is almost as much as my yearly income. I mean. Viral is the same as over hyped . So much was given to the one who made it go viral. It doesn’t sit well with me , so many influencers do not get this because a product was made viral. Ha. No shade or hate tho. I get it. Love your videos❤best of all, you’re honest….
I saw that earlier today too. 👀 It’s crazy because it seemed like so much progress was made in terms of gifting and PR and then with the popularity of TikTok, everything went backwards again. Now it seems like brands are really trying to entice influencers to give good reviews with extravagant gifts and trips again.
@@AndreaMatillano honestly, I only use her after I set my under-eyes with her loose powder; literally to brighten my inner-corner. My forehead shows every pore-when wearing it.
Right now there's only an iPhone version but they mentioned they do have plans to create an Android version too! I'll definitely keep you posted once it's available. 💗
It really is! I sometimes buy products thinking I will absolutely love them because so many people are raving about them for them to be a complete fail for me. It's sometimes nice to shop in person to see what the colors and finishes are like but I don't have a full Sephora near me and the drugstores don't always off testers.

Love this type of video. Thank you for your honesty. Take care and stay safe.❤❤❤❤
Thank you so so much for taking the time to watch! I really appreciate it!
Waiting for your glossy lip balm reviews. Thank you ❤
I would love to film that video! There are so many good options!
I tried the huda loose and thought that was way over hyped. Didn’t look any different than my other powders
I have not bought any of these, although I never get swayed by hyped stuff. I was always the type to research products themselves and get what I like, and I often buy products released ages ago rather than new releases
It's definitely a good strategy! There are so many amazing older launches that get overlooked just because they aren't brand new!
I wasn't sure if it was just the fact I bought the new Too Faced contour the same time which I loved and it's so much better that maybe I was just comparing but nope it's bad and there is no pigment I wish I had returned it
Wow that’s really helpful to hear! I’m glad it wasn’t just me who had a bad experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I have fallen victim to overhyped makeup too many times😅 I watch these type of videos to help me not buy more 😂
I understand it happens to me so often too! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! 🥰
Is the app just for Apple phones? I can't find it on the play store
I downloaded the Iris app! I’m excited to have a better source for product reviews! ❤
I hope you love it as much as I do! 💗
Your hair (color and style) looks so beautiful! Love the color so much!
Your authenticity keeps bringing me back 😊
That honestly means so much to me! Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos!
Thanks for this video! ❤ Personally I’m really sick of hearing about Sol De Janiero products
Agreed! It gives me Bath and Body Works vibes from high school. They don’t even last as long as Bath and Body Works. It’s very cheap appearing too. If I’m going to spend money I’m going to get perfume.
me too 🙄
I've watched different people show face primers on their channels...I've bought them and tried them, then ended up throwing them all away...none of them worked the way they claimed and went on about.
Wonder if it was a clean beauty product? 😅
@@AndreaMatillano Woah 😮
I 100% agree with you about that Patrick Ta Bronzer.
I’m glad it wasn’t just me! I want to love it but I never like how it looks on the skin. 😭
@@AndreaMatillano yeah! When the drugstore is as good as it is complexion wise it’s hard to justify the high end price point unless it’s amazing.
Happy Tuesday Everyone
💗💗
I agree with you completely on everything. I own almost all those products except Hourglass lippies. I love their bullet lipsticks but never purchased these. Thank you for your review.
Is the Iris app only on Apple?
The elf Halo Glow really is so beautiful! I need to use it with the ColourPop Tinted Moisturizer!
i just downloaded iris and already love it!! commented so much and learned so much interesting information!! ❤
Oh yay I’m so happy to hear that you’re a fan!
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one struggling to like the Patrick Ta bronzer. I do love the the blush.
Ahhh I'm so frustrated whenever I use it because I expect it to look like the blush but it doesn't! 😭
@@AndreaMatillano if I try and layer the powder and the cream together, I just get a mess. When I do that with the blush, it’s great.
Nah I’m with you…I sway his entire line during the sale. Mario skin enhancer is wayyyy better imo.
The Haus Labs foundation broke me out terribly! And it slid right off my face by lunchtime.
Oh no! That is seriously the worst. 😭
And when that viral product doesn’t meet everyone’s expectations, which it won’t, it goes from being decent product to “over hyped” and “don’t buy that, buy this instead.”
At some point brands are going to start saying, “Hey look, we’re going to stop putting so much effort into creating products that are fun and innovative, while at the same time trying to give consumers everything they’re asking for, whether that be, “clean” “cruelty free” “no dyes” “vegan” “talc free” “skin like finish” etc. if you can appreciate how much work goes into trying to give you everything you want.”
HAUS labs foundation is the one product I wouldn't call overhyped. It is literally the BEST I have ever tried, my single favorite makeup product of any category. Ethereal Eyes is my second most prized product. I respect everyone's experiences; just WISH everyone could experience what I do with those!
Are you oily or dry skinned? 😊
Ahhh yes such a good way to put it! That's how I feel when I rave about some of my favorites too. When you have an amazing experience you want everyone to feel that too!
@@DopamineDecor very dry, age 35. It reminds me of Armani Luminous Silk if that helps.
Acne prone skin here, didn't like the haus foundation at all! 😅
Ok I love fenty we’re even. I just bought a darker shade for summer after using the lighter color through winter.
Hahah not the Patrick Ta bronzer! I actually LOVE it and the brush and it wasn’t even on my radar but I was interested cause I love a cream bronzer duo. On me it looks good but to each their own. 💜
I almost bought the brush too because I saw so many videos of people using it and it looked really nice!
I have to agree with the Patrick Ta bronzer, I bought it and have to returned it. I got better result from drugstore bronzer.
I feel like a lot of my favorite drugstore brands for some reason! I don’t know why but a lot of high-end brands end up looking patchy on me.
I’ve always said if I got any Mario palette it would be ethereal eyes. But now you’re convinced me I don’t need it haha
I bought it and I really don’t like it very much at all
Any alternatives for the huda pressed powder? :)
The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Pressed Powder is expensive but that's a really good alternative because I feel like it does everything the Huda one claims to do! That being said, the Flower Beauty Light Illusion is an amazing alternative and it's more affordable!
Pat mcgrath
@@AndreaMatillano thank you, will deff try them out
I can't find the iris app
@@AndreaMatillano the beauty of joseon one is also fantastic! Not 100% sure if they're cruelty free but definitely also a great one
Great Video Andrea Matillano
Thank you so much! 🥰
Thank you so much! Excellent video 🥰👍
Thank you for taking the time to watch! 🥰
City Lips!!! It is just way too thick and sticky!!! And sadly, because I hit a sale, I have TWO of them!!!!!
I use them as a lip balm at bedtime!
The top..the hair..❤️❤️
❤️❤️ You’re so kind! Thank you!
@@AndreaMatillano and only certain ones. And not you tube. It’s all tik tok. It’ll slow down. ! People are getting upset. I read the comments. Ha ha
I was so jazzed to download the Iris app and was very disappointed to find that it is only available in the Apple store😔
Ahhh I know! 😭 They said are planning on making an Android version so I will definitely keep you posted once it’s available! 💗
Oh man I really can’t stand the Patrick ta bronzer. It looks patchy every time I use it
I’m glad it wasn’t just me! I’ve tried it so many times but I can’t get it to work for me. 😭
Same feeling about that Huda powder 😒
😭😭 I had such high hopes too!
@@AndreaMatillano honestly, I only use her after I set my under-eyes with her loose powder; literally to brighten my inner-corner. My forehead shows every pore-when wearing it.
It is only available on iPhone
It is for now but they did mention they are planning to make an android version! I’ll definitely keep you posted once it’s available! 💗
I am late but present. Happy Wednesday ❌️ ⭕️
Thank you for being here! I hope you're having a great week.
So Iris is only available for iPhone?????
Right now there's only an iPhone version but they mentioned they do have plans to create an Android version too! I'll definitely keep you posted once it's available. 💗
Patrick ta blush but the cream formula. Terrible. The haus foundation cakey af. That fenty concealer so drying
It’s so hard to know what to get that will work
It really is! I sometimes buy products thinking I will absolutely love them because so many people are raving about them for them to be a complete fail for me. It's sometimes nice to shop in person to see what the colors and finishes are like but I don't have a full Sephora near me and the drugstores don't always off testers.
I wish Iris was
for Android phones too.
I know! 😭 They mentioned that they do plan on making an Android version so I will definitely keep you posted once it is available! ❤️
