My 9 year old is really interested in modeling and 3D printing. I have a couple of larger printers I use, but am regularly tying up. It would be really cool to have something small that she could call her own. Would you recommend this for her given I can help overcome the issues you described in the video or is there another budget 3D printer that may better suite this use case? Thanks, Angus!
I really like how you don't hold back on your views on it. I watched you doing the live unboxing and really enjoyed it. Love to see you do more of them. Thanks Angus.
I actually realized that I print many small things. Spacers, little connector, hooks, vacuum connection rings. Usually only a few centimeters high, and smaller than 10 by 10cm. So something that prints petg 15*15*10cm with the reliability and ease of use like my Prusa I would like it.
The H bot design is really cool. Small printers are actually good for beginners - they tend to be more forgiving and their small size makes them less intimidating. And less room is needed for them. Fabrikator Mini is also another good one.
If your into small printers should check out the voron zero, its a DIY printer but fits 120mm3 print volume in roughly the same size as the minibot, corexy, heated bed and enclosed as well.
I have a small 3d printer of a different brand similar to this one (in fact, it appeared in this video!) And I agree - these tiny cheap 3d printers are great for newbies getting into 3d printing. I certainly get a lot of use out of mine!
Personally enjoying my Cr-100. First & currently only 3d printer I have but it works great for what I needed. Been running it nearly every day for about 3weeks for various here & there prints.
The printer is so small I could print 4 of them on one of my printers. Sadly metal / rubber and printed electronics are still a bit away. But a 3d printer which is printed in one go would be kind of amazing.
Interesting printer, especially for the price. Usually at that level you get a kit, but obviously not every beginner wants to assemble hundreds of parts.
The Pi Zero is not that bad. I had it a while on my Prusa MK3, piggyback on the EINSY board. It works well, especially if you take care of 3 things: 1) Try to connect it with the GPIO pins and if needed, use a PiCam. Connect through USB with a USB cam uses too much resources on the single USB bus in (every!) Raspberry Pi. 2) It works better for functional prints, where the single gcode commands are longer than on rounded, flowing shapes. A square is 4 gcode commands, a circle is dozens of commands. Every commands takes time; the less gcode lines per second, the better. 3) Do not use the OctoPi during a print. Uploading the next gcode or getting live updates on the terminal or gcode viewer uses too much resources. Upload gcode, start a print, and wait until it's done. Works fine...
That portion of their terms of service are null and void. at least in the US. it is established with court precedent that the output of software where you are a primary factor in the generation of that output then you OWN the output. the software maker has NO holding in your output. this would be like adobe or microsoft claiming ownership of documents you make using those programs.
I love my Tronxy X1. It's my workhorse for making all kinds of tools, clamps etc. I love that epoxy print surface too. Its quiet indestructible, works great with 3D lac spray. I mostly use e-Sun pla plus. Works fine. Now it gets company of an Anycubic photon S for more detailed jobs.
Anyone else that was expecting an ad when Angus started to talk about Octoprint? Ok we all know it’s Open Source and does not need any advertising at all but the style of his words could one make believe it’s an ad 😀
Maker's Muse yes you did. But not to worry. Some guys that do no sponsoring in their videos also do this intentionally as a joke like Tom Sanladerer did recently as he told that this video is sponsored by..... his community. I like that.
just put a small washer under the idler wheels on the X-Y gantry. It has to be small enough to only touch the inner part of the bearing, and thick enough so the spinning part of the idler is not pushed against the plastic and binds up the movement. Crazy that they did not see that problem in planning/prototyping the machine, they could have just done a tiny adjustment to the injection molds to fix it.
If you want an awesome, small printer & you’re not afraid to spend a bit ($500), look at the Epax X1. Its a resin printer, so it’s detail is astounding, but it’s ready to print straight out of the box. Seriously, plug it in & you’re ready to print! Obviously you’ve got to download their slicer profile from the SD card, but it’ll download Chitubox for you & slices w/ that. If you want to order it, Amazon is a good option.
What’s the best small 3D printer sub $150? I’m thinking about having one as a second printer to use while the main one is busy with a bigger job. Requirements: 1. Quiet 2. PLA 3. 10cm x 10cm x 10cm build volume
That H-bot system seems like a great design to me! If I would build a new printer from scratch, I would definitely give it a try. Though the coreXY system also works very well.
Gears, fittings, widgets, clips yada yada, I've been happy with my MPMSV2 even with the small build volume but it's hard to beat this price point for getting your feet wet.
Is it possible to use old smartphone with usb-otg for octoprint? It would be cheaper than rpi and you have good camera, wifi and touch screen build in.
I think people have tried Termux before. I think you need a rooted or flashed phone with specific drivers for Termux to latch on to USB devices though. You can just use any old android as a display for your Pi, easily enough.
This is great. I would like to take it a step further and DIY the touchscreen of the printer using an old Android phone to further decrease the cost. It could communicate with the printer board over WiFi or Bluetooth, so no USB shenanigans are required. I guess the market for a display-less 3D printer basically doesn't exist though.

Love small but functional printers, I personally also love the Delta so I got a Monoprice Mini Delta, if its on sale you can get one for about $10 more than this printer, but it does need a little adjusting to get it rolling, this printer is an interesting idea, but the sound is a bit of a turn off.
Check out the Kingroon KP3-180 (I think it's now the -180...). Similar price point, 180mm^3. Z is raised with I think it was 6 screws and a couple plugs. I got it for $112 black Friday, but I think you can get it for $150.
It is a D-Sub plug normally used for RS232, but RS232 actually describes a data transmission ...thingy (not sure if "protocol" would be the right word).
Personally, I wouldn’t buy it because for just another $60 you can get the A1 mini from bamboo. Labs would be a lot better before you correct me yes I know that it doesn’t come with multicolor if you get the non-bundle option.
That's pretty cute. It would be a little too small for me but I agree that kids might get a lot out of it. Interesting kinematics - what's with small printers and uncommon kinematics?
I really want a mini 3D printer for my desk that is quite. I think I am going to have to design and build my own though. I think I would want a slightly larger build volume, more like 100x100x100.
Nice little printer, but to be honest, I bought my Ender 3 for 150 € new and this thing is only 20 € less ( I looked it up, it´s 130 € here) so in my opinion if you can get that much better of a package for just 20 bucks more this kinda isn´t worth it.
