I work at the university and finished my PhD two years ago so I can understand you being ready to be finished with it. I felt that way. In my country we are usually working at the university while doing a PhD and we have a lot of teach. I mean a lot. Especially in some parts of the country. I was crushed. I had up to 7 courses to teach each year and it was no fun. Now I wish I did some things differently but mainly I'm happy my thesis is finished. 😁 Good luck with everything! ☺️❤️
I went through a similar thing where it was only after I graduated uni that I became able to tackle big writing projects. I'm more of a script writer than a prose one, but I definitely understand what you mean. I also feel that my writing has gotten exponentially better as I grow up and approach my thirties. I did miss your videos and loved this catch up. Looking forward to your next video :)

1) A video about how you got around the motivation roadblock would be highly welcomed, as would 2) an audiobook read by you. I love your voice, and I'm one of those folks who needs an audiobook to read something capably (getting as many of my senses firing as possible when I do things REALLY helps me get things done). 3) As a lesbian who enjoys a good flirtatious swordfight between the two lady love interests, I definitely am behind that medieval sapphic romance. 4) I'd love to get an in depth explanation of what hopepunk, as a genre, is - what are the aspects of it common throughout hopepunk stories, what are some of your favorite aspects about it, etc. And 5) lovely to have your face come up on my Subscription feed again! Would love a Greek Myth retelling, maybe a reimagining of the gods of Mount Olympus as corporate CEO's or Influencers :-) Very into the idea of a Gothic novel, and I'm getting braver at reading scary books but not keen on gross elements like in Mexican Gothic or Madam - I'm all about the atmosphere and foreboding sense of dread. I've just read Mrs. Rochester's Ghost, can't get enough of retellings of Jane Eyre. Excited for the return of That's Ancient History!
Since I was a child I want to become an author. But everything I write seems stupid and boring. Maybe I‘ll try this year‘s NaNoWriMo again. Two years ago I even won, but the novel is … not good. I keep trying. 😂
Congrats on nearly being finished with your phd. I’m currently doing my master’s degree, but I’m a bit older (turning 36 in November), because I started studying at nearly 31. It was always my dream to go to university. But I still don’t know what to do after I finish next year. At least I know what I don’t want to do. That counts for something, right?
When it’s safe again to travel I’d love to visit Edinburgh and Scotland in general. I’ve been two London twice (it takes a bit over 4 hours from where I live in Germany by train which is really good!) and definitely want to visit again. But it will have to wait because I still don’t feel that safe to travel, although I’m fully vaccinated. And I’d need a passport because of Brexit. 🙄 Until it is really safe again, I will dream and read about everything British.

I downloaded your novel last night and I am so excited to read it. I really wish hopeful and Sapphic fantasy was more widely available. I often think what's commercial successful is determined at least in part by what they want to publish, rather than what potential customers want! Here's to more diverse books. I am also from Edinburgh but working overseas and I am very jealous of your flat hunting there :)
SAME I need all the hopeful sapphic fantasy ASAP. Yeah it becomes a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy aha - it shows that the markets exist simply by how well some self published books do that would never have been traditionally published.

hey, there! long time fan, first time commentator - I must admit I resonated sooooo much with your phd talk - I finished mine 2 years ago and I'm currently working as a lecturer at Uni, but sometimes I really feel like leaving it all behind and moving on. super struggling with this at the moment and it's so amazing to hear other people evaluate and re-evaluate their situation - I feel sometimes in academia it's almost stigma to leave and that really needs to stop. so congrats on that!

As far as for November writing. I would suggest the YA Gothic novel. Would be very different from your usual writing that you do.

That board game looks amazing, we will have to look for it. Congratulations on your writing and getting close to finishing the PhD! I totally understand the feeling about buying your first place without a romantic partner. It is really a great idea and I would hope that more young women especially would consider doing the same. It is massively important to your personal development as a person to have become your own independent person prior to committing to a lifelong relationship with everything that comes with that. Even though your lives are together, establishing your own space and responsibilities makes good sense. I love that you and your mom have cohabitate so well during the pandemic. Given that your dad passed away so recently, it is great that you could be there for each other, especially with the lockdowns and isolation. In terms of your book and making an audiobook, I love the idea of you reading it! I would guess that most of the people that follow you are comfortable with your voice and the Scottish pronunciations would be a treat. What a great idea! Lastly, in terms of the writing to try, I’m going with the gothic YA finishing school idea. That sounds excellent. You have so many wonderful projects coming up! I’m looking forward to seeing you get through them (which will only create new ideas for the future!). 🔥
