The performance at 9:18 and 10:53 is essentially unmiked because there were some microphone problems so it doesn't work as it should. You can hear how well his voice really carries.
Alex newell has such a high and developed voice , i honestly laugh when some one tries to call him a mezzo soprano when he's odviously a Soprano , He has a very rare voice in fact Modern vocal teachers don't know how to train a voice like this , Male soprano/sopranist is the most misunderstood voice in fact the Soprano voiced in general is misunderstood

Also that's mostly because people use the worst clips of him in compilations and mostly from his teens... He improved a lot. Even this concert is eh compared to his voice now (technique-wise). And he's also a HIGHLY stylistic singer. With a developed chest voice at that.

A vocal doctor analysed his vocal folds and confirmed it’s a soprano voice. Plus it really doesn’t sound much different from a normal developed soprano voice to me. His passaggi also sit like that.

Kaji, do u think singing is subjective? I get mocked by some people because I believe singing is not subjective. Singing has a standard for distinguish a singer and non-singer, amateur and profesional. They think that bad or good singing is based on personal liking. I think even though I don't love someone voice, when she she has met the standard that required, then her singing is good . They don't even know that (singing in tune) is one of the standard to produce a beautiful voice, and distinguis non singer and a singer. And when I said that, they were silent. But I personal believe when someone has developed voice or technique, her voice will sound beautiful in everyone's ear. But what do you think?

Like you said , proper technique is the standard to distinguish an amateur , a good singer or the bests vocalist. On the other hand, tone and musicality can be subjective as not every one will like the same timber of voice . I’m not a big fan of Maria Callas B5/C6 because I just don’t like her tone up there but Technically you cannot denied that she is one of the best vocalist of the last 200 years !
His tessitura is higher than most male but I don't think he is a male soprano because his voice is too heavy, too thick, and too dark. Male Mezzo soprano is correct for me. He has easiness in upper range(F#5- ) because his flexibility and mixing is great

Is there a correlation between voice type and sexuality? especially in male? because i notice, gay men 'tend' to have higher voice than straight men, at least an androgynous tone, i know it's not all true, gay men can have deeper voice too but still it's more often found in gay men....i'm not being offensive, it's just pure curiosity and maybe this is a silly question

Even tho he has a very "feminine" tone ,I guess because of his vocal tract he also has a bit of a masculine edge in his tone (I dont know how to word it in another way)
Differences in skull shape etc. between men and women play a part in it. Men also have thicker oropharyngeal isthmus (opening at the back of the mouth into the throat) which is a large part of why men sound different even if they are natural sopranos. That's also why some women like Rosa Ponselle (video on my channel on her as well - classical dramatic soprano) sound they way they do. They got thicker isthmuses. And why someone like Ben Cook has an almost boylike texture to his voice.
Alex just causally belting better than most female sopranos. His mid belts are my favorite, powerful and resonant.

He's actually freakishly full and chesty up high. When he drops that extra weight he has no issue sustaining B5s and even C6s.
