I'm a little late on this video but I just wanted to say a few things. From what I've gathered, Alex is a gay man, not trans, who has the ability and predisposition to sing like a woman and cross dress. And I think that's fantastic. I know there's a lot of gender identity going around. Many on this comments section even proclaim that Alex is a trans woman or identifies as "she". But, he doesn't. And what I like about that is it send a very positive message. As a man, he chooses to wear dresses, sings crazy belts in a lighter tone commonly associated with female voices, and likes men. On the surface, one might wonder why wouldn't he identify as a she? To an outside observer, many have assumed he was as she. But here's where it gets good. Alex doesn't appear to need gender identity to define who he is. He likes what he likes, acts how he wants to act, regardless of how gender norms see him. So that's my takeaway. I'm not saying this can work for everyone. Many trans people out there were assigned the wrong gender at birth and that's caused them a lot of struggle in their lives. And many other people simply feel very strongly that they are a man or a woman, or reject the binary system completely. I'm not against that. My thought is, it really shouldn't matter. Your gender shouldn't define what you do or like or how you act. Gender norms are stupid. But, nor do I think you should let what you do, like or act define your gender for you. What's so wrong about a man who likes men, wears dresses, and sings high? Because those are female gender norms, he should identify as a female? Why can't he just be who he is and like what he likes? And that's exactly what Alex does, so I applaud him for that. Similarly, why should a girl who likes sports, hates wearing dresses, doesn't like the color pink, or whatever other stupid gender norm there is that fits here, be pressured to feel as if they aren't a girl on the inside because they like those "boy" things? Everyone should just be able to like and do what they want and not have to have gender norms slapped into their faces. Gender norms are no different than stereotypes for gender.

Why couldn't I be cast for a part in The Color Purple, 'Stead of a random black girl singin' the soul? My agent gave me advice. Those words I'll never forget. He said "Don't think you'll ever be cast As Eponine or Cossette." But I guess things always could be worse, When it comes to my Broadway station At least I'm not cursed Enough to have been born Asian. Then I'd be stuck in Miss Saigon dancing on a pole, Stead of the random black girl singin' the soul. The designers can't light me. Director don't know my name. And the make up artist thinks That we all wear the same... shade. And Mr. Stage Manager Thinks I got too much sass. The costumer don't know what to do, With my big old black--hair. Maybe I should audition for American Idol. They love the random black girl singin' the soul. So what does this song change? Well, not a relevant thing. But you gotta be thinkin' to yourself "Goddamn, this sister can sing". Don't you hate it when songs are so self-referential? I'm a random black girl singin' the... Don't stop me now, cause baby I'm on a roll. I'm the random black girl singin' the... I can make an entire phrase out of one syllable. 'Cause I'm a random black girl singin' the soul.

When you are raised in massive black choirs down south, high tenors and extraordinary singers are the norm. Down there, you either sing or sit down. They do let you know!

So a lead on a tv show: that does not make. I'm glad he's pursuing a music career, because that's where he'll really shine. He has a beautiful gift.
