  • In this video, I discuss eating persimmons, and how to know when they are ripe. Persimmons have to be mushy before they are ripe enough to eat. Unripe, hichaya persimmons, leave an unpleasant, dry feeling in your mouth. For easy cooking and recipes, be sure to check out my easy cooking channel. / @tostinmaneasycooking

Thanks for the info. My son picked one up from the grocery and we had no idea when to cut it. Still need to wait a bit longer.

I just had one for the first time today. It had the texture of a mushy pumpkin which i didn't love, but the flavor was like brown sugar and cinnamon. It's more like candy than a fruit.
It was still slightly astringent which i kind of liked.

I’ve bought them in England. Each one has black marks throughout the fruit. Not centre as seeds would be presumably. I cant bring myself to eat those parts. Should I?

Love Persimmon ! Today tried these hachiya variety and it was not ripe. AT ALL.
It leaves your mouth feeling tingly like if you had applied orajel and then your mouth gets really dry.. its a lingering dryness that spreads through your mouth leaving an awful taste it’s disgusting.
Regular flat “sheng” variety are crunchy like apples
I had no idea they were total opposite for ripening..

I have heard of them. But I don't remember ever eating them. I think they would make a good pie or cobblers.

  • @IamJaneS

I repeatedly tell people, DO NOT attempt to eat it until it's like a rotten tomato. If you pick it up and it feels like it's going to explode in your hand, then it's ready to eat. Yet, I keep getting told how disgusting it is when they got furry mouth.
If it's not ripe enough, your mouth feels like you've just licked the inside of a vacuum cleaner bag, and no amount of rinsing will change that. It has to wear off in its own time. Always fun for the unsuspecting!
