Air pollution, unfriendly people, high cost of living, lack of biodiversity with birds, fish, and other animals, and long cold Winters make Utah very depressing. People from Utah well connected tend to do fine in Utah. I dread that I came to Utah and don't have some personal wealth like a vehicle to make another move like to Kansas or Missouri. Don't move to Utah to retire. Do move to Utah if you're positioned for a great 6 figure job. If I do end up homeless, then I'll Greyhound to Missouri to restart life. It's a desert in more ways than just being a desert, but if you're professional person positioned for something, then you're golden.

I'm a lifelong Utahn and I always thought the grid system was more of a selling point than a liability. Probably something that I would have warned people about, rather than the grid system, is about the people, themselves. Utahns, by and large, are very polite people. However, people from elsewhere mistake that for "friendly". Yes, some of us are friendly, but please don't be disappointed if you find it difficult to make social connections here. Polite is different from friendly.

Dont move to Utah, its not as nice as everyone says. There are only two seasons, winter and construction. In the construction season it gets and stays in the hundreds for a couple weeks. SLC has the worst air quality and it has only gotten worse. You'll pay $2k rent for a 2 bedroom apartment and you'll be asked to pay 800k for a 300k house. Don't move to Utah.

Two things I noticed when I used to visit Utah.
In the summer time, it would be a nice 95° day, then all of a sudden it gets windy and the clouds move in and it starts raining. The wind kicks up the dirt from the surrounding desert and it's now raining mud. If you were driving, you'd have to pull over and a half hour later, it's sunny again. The second thing is the bad drivers. It's like they don't know what a turn signal is, they make lane changes without even looking in their mirrors.😮

If you really want to enjoy living in Utah you really need to be passionate about the outdoors or church. Or your job. If you're self-employed even better. There really is a major cultural vacuum outside of those things. There's (obviously) no beach, no music culture, no drinking culture, no sub-culture and no outdoor restaurant social culture. And a lot of people really lean on these things (in other cities) when they're not working or spending time with their families. There also really is no traditional working class culture here either. You won't find too many greasy spoon diners, old local mom n' pop businesses, historic traditional delis, old ice cream parlors, anything like that. You'll notice that most people here are middle/upper middle class. And there's really a feeling that most of the businesses seem quite new. It's probably a bonus (also) if you love talking everybody's heads off because otherwise either people don't engage with strangers here or after a while they only want you to listen to their one sided conversations ;)

cultural vacuum is all around America especially with brainwashing from tv. Drinking is not a culture, it's degeneracy. Want real culture, learn an art or play an instrument. The cost of living is way too high here. In the last 10 years Utah has become insanely crowded, combine that with the shitty drivers and commuting here isn't a lot of fun. Too many people on the roads. I'm looking forward to retirement when we can leave. Also, Utah heavily taxes social security and retirement, which is another con.
The grid system is brilliant and once you learn it, getting around is a lot easier.

So, I'll be the nerdy paragraph guy who talks about the benefits of grid or numbered streets.
While winding or straight roads with only street names and not numbers are more pleasant, it's easy to get lost in a new area without a map or satellite navigation. Much time is spent just finding which end of Oak Street you're searching for. Or was it Oak Avenue? Or Oak Drive? Even a delivery person can mix up mail between these similar streets.
Roads (both winding and in a grid) which include street numbers (with or without street names) can indicate the cardinal directions and distance from the main street or center of a town. These ensure that I won't get lost and won't need a map or sometimes questionable navigation. Think of this being organized as an XY axis quadrant. A center or main street can have any name but it exists at the zero point of an East/West or North/South axis, or perhaps where both meet at the actual center of a city. It's like a local lat/long geolocation. It's efficient. Yes, it's boring, but no other house or business or dot in the XY quadrant in that city can be confused with yours.
If I'm in a city for the first time and I find myself at an intersection of a south street and an east street and am looking for 215 North 300 West, I know I need to drive northwest. No Siri is needed. As I drive, I'll see the street numbers decrease until I reach a center street or main street, then see the numbers increase as I drive further away from that zero point of the axis. I can enjoy driving along several streets from the other end of the city until I reach 300 West, without worrying if each one is the tree street or presidential street that I wanted. Once on 300 North, I do what everyone does and follow the increasing or decreasing street numbers and then the increasing or decreasing house numbers until I reach the house with 215 North as its house number. One side of the street will have odd house numbers and then even on the other side. If the street numbers are larger than 300, I know I passed it and need to turn around. So, there's my two cents. Maybe someone will enjoy reading it or maybe not.

I don’t understand the argument about the cost of housing. That particular problem (renting and owning) is a world wide phenomenon! Same thing with groceries, durable goods, transportation, etc.
As someone that travels for work I can tell you is the same everywhere. Want cheap affordable housing? Travel back in time or move to an area no one wants to live in, but you may find without good job prospects and living in the boonies.

Yes and no imo... Utah has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation and is generally considered one of the best places to live depending on your priorities.
There are definitely states where the real estate costs are much lower for a similar property. New homes are constantly being built in Utah all across the Wasatch Valley (which is where 85% of the population lives). Wasatch Valley is basically from Logan all the way down to the suburbs of Provo... and if you are going from Ogden down to south salt lake the whole area is just one large blanket of suburbia where you can only see where one city starts and the next begins by using a map.

Horrible air in the winter (the reason we do not need any more people here)! Jobs are low-paying compared to other areas. Housing is out of control, and prices are astronomical.

If you want to move to Utah to escape from a "Woke" city or state that is going to shit, then you will want to avoid Salt Lake City or Salt Lake county in general. Salt Lake is going the way of "Wokness" so you will want to elsewhere.

i have check out the crime in abq 4 years. im not worried about it and will carry a weapon. there and i did in florida too. im not poor and wont live in the ghetto. salt lake city has its share of crime and mormons which are cult like to me. ive know some in the past. also u have tremendous pollution in salt lake. i dont shovel snow and abq hardly has any. what u get there 100 inches a year, just a guess. abq arguably best weather in the usa year round.

106 and it's not only dry it's very similar in a lot of ways to Phoenix oh yeah now they are still hotter definitely but Utah's not that far behind lately right now in the summer as I put this comment Phoenix has only been about 12 to 13 degrees higher when we've been hitting 98 to 103 and they are about 115**

Avoid SLC if you cannot handle homeless camps and drug addicts everywhere. Everyone talks about how bad it is on the west coast. It's just as bad here. And they do it openly. Walking the dog this morning came across 4 different people just openly doing their drugs and as a result I accidentally inhaled a little of something. I don't have any idea what it was but my lungs burned and I felt really weird for about 30 minutes. This is not a safe community for families and particularly for children.

@@livinginslc ..I have never been in the heart of Salt Lake City but just saw a video the other day on YT of someone just filming the streets of SLC and the homelessness looked pretty bad (but not sure if it's as bad as the west coast-- I could not tell).
Otherwise the parts outside SLC seems super clean compared to San Francisco region and LA region. First thing I noticed was it was super clean haha.

I'm a mail carrier in South Salt Lake. Yeah there's homeless folk. But it's really not this shattering thing that makes life difficult. Like they exist. But it's not stopping transit or business or folk raising kids in a safe and clean environment throughout the state.
It's really concentrated to small geographic areas in SLC. 20 minutes away in any direction and you'll see panhandle folk, but not tents and carts and such.
If you really hate seeing homeless folk existing, you can just be somewhere other than the center of SLC.
