I was working on the Disney project in France to build Eurodisney the night i heard he died, as an Irishman i felt in my duty to get as drunk as i could and sing Queen songs in every bar i visited. Great night was had by all and exactly the way you remember a rock star..
This is my favorite Queen song. It was used on the soundtrack for the Higlander, about a guy who is immortal and the only way he can die is if head is chopped off, because in the end "There can only be one." This song goes so much with the character. Another song they did for the Higlander is the song "Princes of the Universe".
Also from the Highlander film Queen did the track A Kind of Magic, which also goes well with it. In the film - during WW2 The immortal Connor McLeod as a soldier gets shot in the back by a Nazi while he was trying to save a child from them. He opens his eyes and the girl asks him why he isn't dead "Shh, It's a kind of magic" He tells her just before picking up the automatic weapon he was shot with and shoots the nazi back. (The Nazi dropped it thinking it was faulty).
Oh boys, you want to see Freddie sing opera? Check out his duets with Spanish opera singer Monsterrat Cabballet. The Golden Boy (my favorite), Barcelona, How can I go on. All amazing
I know that Brian was going through difficult times when he wrote this song, based on interviews...but I also cannot believe that they didn’t have an idea that Freddie was already ill at this point, or knew what was happening with him...such a beautiful, heart wrenching song. Queen...again...just perfection.
Freddie Mercury wasn't diagnosed until 1987. That's a fact that has emerged since his death. The movie Bohemian Rhapsody took artistic licence by showing him telling the band that he had AIDS before the 1985 Live Aid concert. The Highlander film is from 1985 and the last tour of Queen with Freddie Mercury was the Magic tour of 1986 which culminated in the famous Wembley Stadium concert. They added one last concert at Knebworth Park and Freddie came off stage at the end and said "I can't fucking do this anymore ". They had a break for 3 years and released the Miracle album in 89 with minimal videos and in 91 the Innuendo album was released. The videos for some songs show how ravaged Freddies body was by the virus. He announced that he had AIDS the day before he died. He left a lot of material and the band released Made in Heaven in 95. This includes songs Freddie had previously recorded solo and they turned them into Queen songs like "I was born to love you ".
He knew he was dying at that point, he wanted to do as much as possible before he died, he idolised Montserrat and wanted to do a duo before he left which is why we have Barcelona.
That was always his philosophy. He has said in interviews that a band is an ensemble. A solo should only complement the song/vocal, not dominate it. That doesn't mean he can't cut loose once in a while of course. The full solo on I Want It All, on his solo track Driven By You and the Halen-esque tapping fest from Resurrection (another solo track) are all longer/more elaborate than most of his usual work.
Also the philosophy of Roger and John as well as Brian. They give the song what it needs and the singer the room to do what they need to do. Brian always mentors instrumentalists to never get between the singer and the audience.
As other queen fans suggest, do the live version of this song in Budapest, It gives a whole new perspective upon the song as freddie sings all the verses with great passion. I can't help but have tears watching that performance.
Im 77 years old have known Queen for a very long time and i cant enough of them and oh that Freddie what a beautiful voice. Nov.23 2020 Freddie only drink water on stage.

This was a song written by the Queen guitarist, Brian May, for the "Highlander" movies. The other song was the main theme song of the Highlander movies & TV series, "We Are Immortal!" But THIS song was sadly played in the movies when the Immortal character fell in love with a mortal, knowing she would eventually grow old & die. No time or place for us just this one swift moment - sad. Who wants to live forever anyway - after centuries of broken hearts, they wish to grow old with their lover rather than grieve over another lost love & starting over. But then, it also definitely addresses issues that Freddie faced in his life, too. A beautiful ballad! 💖
This song was written to tear your heart out. In the Highlander franchise it was used whenever an Immortal lost their significant other to death. After Freddie died... it took a whole new meaning. I cannot listen to this song without crying.
Highlander - very few movies are famous for the soundtrack. A Kind of Magic from that movie is also awesome. As you go deeper into their catalog you will be even more amazed at their versatility. Check out Innuendo. An absolute masterpiece.

But with his illness he sing this song perfectly with the high notes & theres a line there that he need to hit the note so much high. Brian was doubtful that Freddie cannot do it because he is so ill but Freddie said “Hold on darling” then he sip his vodka and then effortlessly did it. So hoping to react it next.😊
This song was one of the songs written for the soundtrack to the 1986 film HIGHLANDER with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. Not only was it a great film which has gone on to spawn several sequels , and TV series..but QUEEN filled it with extraordinary music, and really helped make it an award winning film. This song makes more sense when you understand the film is about a tribe of old world Immortals, who are living in a modern world. Just a remarkable song .
