  • In this video "60.5 mile racing pigeons training" The racing pigeons experienced first hand what adverse conditions can have on their homing ability. The California smoke from wildfires caused disastrous results for a routine training day! If I had only realized it was smoke instead of hazy skies I would not have attempted the training on that day. Racing pigeons homing ability was diminished significantly.

Sorry for your losses Mike unfortunately I know the feeling too, I live in Southern California two race seasons ago old birds we had bad fires here plus over 90 degrees every race everyone experienced big losses. Fire, smoke, haze and heat is the perfect combination for loosing good birds. It hurts but it really makes you a better flyer and observer of the birds and weather conditions. Breed up some more and get back out there! Love your videos peace and good luck.

Hope they continue to trickle back. This smoke is really creating issues with deciding to train or not. It’s not like they can fly around it. I was the same as you thinking it was just some ground fog that would burn off until someone told me about the smoke. I think it’s more of an air quality issue then anything. Just one more thing to think about when training or deciding to do a toss or not. I have been training on the short side more often and hesitant to push them out too far. If I lose half of 18 it’s going to hurt.
