I’ve just come back to my boat after 3.5 weeks away. The Marina was frozen solid. I turned the water pump off and left all the taps open. I left one porthole window and all the doors open. Left a gap of about an inch under my bed, pulled the mattress away from the wall and left all cupboard doors open in the bedroom. Everything was ok when I got back. I did set my heating to 18 degrees during the day and it must have come on because the boat wasn’t very cold when I got back and I’ve used about a quarter of a tank of diesel.
Happy Tuesday 😊,love how you both try and learn ,and then take time for us to cross our fingers ,take a breath ,and then a big smile comes ,because you both rocked it again .See you both Friday, cuppa in hand .Hi to the special boy Rufus .🐕☘️💚🤗
Lovely to have you back on board again. GG really had chilled down and thank goodness you were forearmed into planning ahead for the cold weather, but sorry the boat plants took the hit. The buds looked alive so you might get new growth coming in a couple of weeks. Hope so. I see a new potential moneymaker in sock garlands! Stay warm and safe. Xx
Thank you for another interesting and fun video. Well handled water/pipe issue!! Love the new fans. What an interesting/lovely shot of the frozen sidewalk plants. Your reality is my time away from all the "stupid" going on here in the good old USA!! Hope it warms up for you soon!!
I think the fan probs has two functions, taking the heat from the pipe and kicking it out, but also the heat in the room (further into the room) is already sitting on the ceiling, it will help shift that heat and circulate it (I would have thought anyway) What a glorious morning it was there today, I stayed over, so beautiful. Loving it there.❤ I hate to say it, but I had my Jasmine in the garden go transparent' like that and it never recovered..I had to cut it down to the roots, it did grow again but it lost 3 years of growth!!! ugh.
Great new fans. Your twiggy plant is a Dracanea, you can regrow the cuttings, & where you cut will regrow, & your Pathos thing won't mind the haircut you've given it. Just try to water with tepid/room temperature water 2 or 3 of the next times you water them. I'm a plant murderer, & can't go wrong with Jade plants, Aloes & Mother-in-laws tongues, super tough plants, that have lots of Babies. 😊 Glad your warming up, eventually. TFS, & take care you 3. 👍🙂🐶
Aww - sorry about your plants. Fingers crossed they'll survive! I loved seeing Rufus barking at the bricks! He's right - they shouldn't have been thrown in - but wow - that is some strong ice!!
Hi guys Maybe you could buy a small oil filled electric heater and leave it on its lowest setting while you are away. It will keep your pipes from freezing inside at least and your plants alive.😊
Hi from Australia, You said it Wes frozen beds of water never gets boring and we are lucky to live it through you guys, it is so hot here I hate It, my mum and dad came here from Glasgow and what I would give to touch snow or have a cold x.mas. I am 60 so I will carry on living it through you both. Rufus is a human in a fur coat I ADORE him.🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤⭐⭐
Omg you both looked frozen but hey your pipes had not frozen.. So so pleased you have a nice quiet fan 😂. I would take the big one back I don't think you need it .❤
Hi Amy and Wes. Well done for preparing your pipes before you went away. Sorry your plants were frozen. Leave them a few months to see if any new growth comes from the roots before replacing them 🥰 Take care. Nick
I have never been clever enough to understand but the fan working is a dream and for what it does. Gently, gently with your plants, they may make it as they are resilient! My first thought was is there any way you could leave a gentle heat on whilst you are away because you have a lot of faffing about on your return! Unsightly, do you want to be warm or make it look pretty!
I reckon you’ll stop noticing that new flue fan soon enough, it’ll become background scenery 😅 you might be able to cut & propagate that broken bit of the plant! my grandparents have had a dragon plant for as long as I’ve been alive & regularly cut it back, and it’s now got great-great-grandchildren! hopefully it’s not been too ice-damaged to work, but it’s worth a try? 🤞
Oh no! Poor plants, it’s amazing that the inside of the boat reached minus temperatures too! It’s not looking good for them, but you never know! Keep warm and safe all of you. xxxx
@@shirleygreaves9650 I guess because it’s in the frozen water, all the heat gets drawn out of the boat & it reaches the same/similar temp, and there’s no heating turned on to fight it - thermodynamics! shame about the poor plants though 🥲
So glad you are back, I missed you both and Ruffus. Looking forward to what 2025 has for you. Brrrrrr that is so cold coming from me in Australia where it is summer, we have been having 23 to 28 degree days.
Aw your wee plants . Really feel for them ...and you two. I've been having trouble with Bonsai that I've been nursing along . One had to been thrown away .... so sad , still struggling with another . My really old one is fine . All the best with yours xxx
We learnt that the hard way left our boat for a while it had got to -7. Had not drained the pipes fully and when we switched on the water pump kept running 😮 panicking switched it off,on checking it was the shower mixer valve was completely split by the ice. Expensive but easy to fix😊
Blowing warm air from ceiling level is a great idea. There used to be a company who installed ducted heat from ceiling level to blow out at floor level. Their claim to saved heating costs was incredible.
See this is one of the (many) reasons I follow the channel - for the hints and tips for when I get a boat 👍. I will say I hadn't thought about plants (the dracenia should grow back. I had one for years that used to get cut back). Thank you for the fan (see i wasn't the only comment 😂). Hadn't seen a flue one before though 🤔. If you are taking requests can we see some winter cooking on a boat please 🙏
We have little greenhouse heaters in our boat: one in the front of the boat and one inside a cupboard in the front. We keep it on a very low setting all the time in winter and it just takes that icy cold out of the boat. Sad about the plants. They are not meant to withstand such extreme cold. But let them warm up and don’t overwater them now; let them recover. Plants have their periods of being dormant and down so just keep them warm now and see if they survive. Next time, take them away with you when you go away when going to someone’s house. By the way, the volume became really high so it was very loud!
So sad about your plants! We had the same freezing weather and our bunny lives in the greenhouse overwinter and the door kept freezing shut . Fingers crossed that you manage to save some of them (although it’s a perfect excuse to buy more) ❤️
You did better than us. I took keira back to uni and accidentally left the pump on and pipes full of water just before the cold.snap so marty had to do the 300 mile round trip as soon as I got back to turn them off. He went back to the boat last night and even with the emptied pipes our shower controls are now leaking so we need to replace them. And 2 windows have started leaking this winter and damaged the internal woodwork. No idea how we are going to fix them. It never ends
Shame plants didn't survive. Amy next time you leave Gi Gi try putting all plants in shower tray, cover them with a plant fleece, that should give them a better chance. Guess it's a trip to garden centre to stock up on new ones. 💚
I hate the cold weather, I always enjoy our summers in Australia, a hot Xmas, being in our beautiful outback camping, I don’t know how you do it living in freezing temperatures I suppose you get used to it living there. 😊
You know what happens if you freeze lettuce at the back of the fridge... thats what has happened to the plants, all the cells have ruptured. If you prune them back really really hard so the root system is supporting very little... they miiiiiiiight come back, if the roots were protected from frost by relatively dry soil. If you soaked them before you left, probably not. :( Imagine I've said something lovely and positive here to balance out ^^^.
Keep the old fan as a spare. It is not hard or expensive to change a bearing. I hear that some of the older fans are actually made to better standards than the newer ones and can last a very long time. I know my late great uncle and aunt had one in the house and it lasted decades - it might still be going somewhere as far as I know. "Everyone should pick up a piece of ice at least once a year to show how thick it is" Not fair, there is never any ice here. My wife was shouting at the screen during this video - we have a couple examples of the same plant. Apparently the top part of the plant Amy cut off can be replanted and if the frost damage is not too bad (that's the part we don't know since we are in the tropics), then it will root. Also, the trunks do push out shoots to replace the top if it is lost. They just don't branch out if there is no need to. I hope the plants are the only damage from the cold. Tim & Jalika, Malaysia
It's been so cold here in Yorkshire. The snow was four inches thick. Still some snow left. Amy I feel so sad that your plants are flopped. I hope they come back. I don't have indoor plants because my cat would eat them. But I do have a herb garden. Some plants are more delicate than others others so I will have to wait and see what survived . Hey Ho a good excuse to dash out and buy some more while Wes will feel he can't say no.
I had one of those thermo fans on my wood burner here in Oz but it was as much use as a chocolate teapot. Didn't even move a tissue....does yours have any airflow from it as I'll buy one when I'm back on holiday later this year.
When house plant leaves get frozen, you can try watering them to help them recover. You can also bring the plant indoors to a cool room or garage. Watering Water the plant with about an inch of water to help rehydrate the plant's tissues. Check the soil around the plant to make sure it needs water. Bringing indoors Move the plant indoors to a cool room or garage. Avoid placing the plant in full sunlight. Patience Be patient, as the amount of damage depends on the severity and duration of the freeze. Plants can usually recover from light freezes that are short in duration. Other care Avoid pruning the plant right away. Hold off on adding fertilizer to the plant. Signs of freeze damage Damaged leaves may shrivel, turn brown or black, or become limp. Eventually, the damaged leaves may drop off.
Wow. We never get anything like that here in Brisbane. Instead we have 33c today and 37c tomorrow and the coldest its ever been for the last 25 years is 4c.
sorry about the plants... I had that happen once when we left our place for a bit and none of my "tropical" plants came back. I managed to get cuttings from friends and restarted them but since then, I learned I had to either take them with me or take cuttings with me just in case.
When you drain your pipe have all your taps open till it is fully drained. I would leave them like that till you return to the boat and have opened the water flow valve from the tank
Amy leave your plants alone they should recover in a day or so. In future wrap with garden fleece(around canes it will keep them warm put the dracanne Uber the really long one canes in that pot and youl save 2plants xxxxyour warmer than we arexxxx
Brrrrrr! One tip if you have to leave the boat when there is a risk of frost and you can’t leave any kind of heating on: take the plants with you, well wrapped. Less risk of damagecas temps for houseplants ideally would have to stay above 15 degrees C.
Your plants are frost damaged. And the damaged parts will just die. But if you cut them right back they should recover. As long as they don't get frosted again. If you take them to your mums for rest of winter they will grow again. I'm a gardner. Xx❤❤❤❤❤

It looks fine and functional. Take it off in the summer. Who cares how it looks now. The most important thing is your warmth.
Omg you both looked frozen but hey your pipes had not frozen..
So so pleased you have a nice quiet fan 😂.
I would take the big one back I don't think you need it .❤
Ice on tap...how cool is that. I usually have to make it for my morning Gin.

Aww we watched twice this week! And we spotted a boat called Noggin! Our black lab is called Noggin! Yay for the Noggins🖤
The ponytail plant and trim ivy and will come back. Now it’s a challenge
Great fan you will get used to it hope the plants survive love Rufus coat keep safe and warm 💗🙏🐕
Happy New Year to you both, you could paint the flexible thread black and you will never notice it. Bob
Oh Amy, I ache for your plants! They’re goners and you’ll be shopping for some newbies come Spring 😘
Thank you for the video. It is good to see Rufus has a nice coat. Take care.
Give it some time, you're gonna miss the bad bearing fan haha
Aw your wee plants . Really feel for them ...and you two. I've been having trouble with Bonsai that I've been nursing along . One had to been thrown away .... so sad , still struggling with another . My really old one is fine . All the best with yours xxx
Awwwwww I feel the same about my plants Amy. I do not like anything dying.

Turn the fan around to point at the chimney. Pulling room air over the cooling fans makes more electricity and therefore spins the fan faster
Blowing warm air from ceiling level is a great idea. There used to be a company who installed ducted heat from ceiling level to blow out at floor level. Their claim to saved heating costs was incredible.
Amy and Wes I hate the winter, sad about the plants try and keep warm.everything looks dull horrible XX❤❤
I love your sock garland, very colourful 😂
My water filled heated towel rail expanded, hadn’t realised I needed to drain some water off and top up with antifreeze
Yay new video 😃
yaay! 🎉☺️ hope you like it!!

Moss balls! I must have one as a pet. ❤
RIP Amy's plants - the (cold) snap strikes again :(
A few more fans on that flue and you would be sorted 😜✌️💜
Always leave a tap open aswell due to expansion in the pipes but turn off the water pump
Hi, just a daft question but don't you use the radiators? I'm guessing they run through diesel heater?
We have little greenhouse heaters in our boat: one in the front of the boat and one inside a cupboard in the front. We keep it on a very low setting all the time in winter and it just takes that icy cold out of the boat.

That happened to my plants so I gave them water, and in a day or two they were fine. Hopefully they will be ok. Take care!
Sure looks cold there . Good job on the extra fan . Sorry about your plants.
Can u guys leave a small electric heater on when u leave the boat
Would a diesel heater stay on all winter? No coal dust, no freezing, no coal bags, even heat all winter? Thoughts?
Wow, what a lot of cold stuff.. 🥲
If you were only gone for a couple of days could you not have left an oil filled radiator plugged in to keep the chill out?
Always open your kitchen cabinets I have to do that.
the fan on the tube needs to be halfway from top to bottom for it to work right

Water your plants with warm water to thaw them out. It might work
Is Rufus warm enough without a coat ?
Water tanks dont usually freeze as they are under the water line 🦆💕
Those plants might just be dehydrated Amy. 🍃🌿
If you like, I can send you some cuttings of our boat plants? We've got a big devil's ivy / pothos that could do with a trim :) x

Next time since you are in a marina leave a convector fire on a timer switch ?

I have my thermostat on the same all day and night, cabin is always warm,
I keep a few bottles of water handy for cups of tea. It was only cold for two days!
My boat is warm enough in side without fans.
Keep the blinds down when you can, it's warmer
Get yourself a electric oil filled radiator. I use one in my caravan. Can leave it on
Don't use much on electric. And keeps it warm all the time

It woukd save your plants as well.

Have you heard how the Bears are doing?
they’re doing well and we still stay in touch 😊 we are meeting up with them soon!
