      Thing that's missed is that the stress units generated by water wheels is defendant upon the number sides in contact with flowing water, which is why a lot of the designs using water wheels have it wrap around. The large wheels may have especially underperformed as a result of this.

    each windmeal bearing can support up to 128 sails (you only used 8 on each), and when taking into account the ability to overlap the windmeals (which you didn't account for), you can have half of ALL the blocks in the chunk be maxed out windmeal bearings (connected to 128 sail blocks and generating 8192 SU each) with the other half of the blocks used for transfering the generated power
    for a total of:
    8192*384/2*16^2 = 402,653,184 SU (aka around 8.55 times more then even the steam engines)

I also made a 3x3 steam engine design, fits 3 of them, and the pumps and arms are powered by water wheels. All im saying is...

    hi :D
    i know this is a silly video but you got my nerdy ass cuious nonetheless lol
    with a few simple calculation, i was able to know that with the level 9 steam engine, for them to loose efficiency compared to the level 4 steam engine, they'd need to be at least 12 layer thick, anyhting under 11.9947 (round it to down to 11) layers will produce more than 47 083 520,.
    at best if you can somehow keep the 5 layer thick steam engine, you should produce 112 066 560 su, otherwise just slighly less everytime until layer 11 where it's 50 135 040 su :D

    Also if anyone is trying to get the absolute max out of steam engines you should go for a 10k source inf lava 'cus it's much much better if you need that much lava for something

    why doesn't anyone use tree farms for steam engines? you can even use a bulk smelter to get a crap ton of charcoal but that might sacrifice too much space and I'm too lazy to do the math so maybe just normal tree farm with 1x1 buffer vaults

    • @CathodeRayKobold
      @CathodeRayKobold 5 месяцев назад

      I just discovered this myself. The amount of trees I needed to support my engine array was a little disappointing, though. It didn't end up being more compact than a dripstone lava farm.

    So the only reason as to why the Large Water Wheels produced less SU than the small ones, is simply because while the large one produced more SU than the small one, there was a larger amount of the Small Water Wheels than there were of the Large Ones. Since the large ones produces twice the amount of the small one, but because of how many small ones there were. They simply outnumbered the large ones by more than enough amount that they produced more SU than the large one simply because they had a bigger number and therefore was able to produce more. If you had an equal amount, then the large ones would definitely produce a much higher amount. But you wanted to do it within a chunk and you compressed it as much as you could, so no faults there and you wanted to experiment and you did. When there is experimentations, there is no such thing as a wrong way to do it! The only thing that exists is how badly it backfired!

    the small water wheels weren't as compact as possible and quite a lot of space was wasted
    waterwheel = [W]
    air = [A]
    water source = [B]
    [w][b][w][w][b][w][w][b][w][w][b][w][w][b][w][a]
    [w][a][w][w][a][w][w][a][w][w][a][w][w][a][w][a]
    is the basic layout and that should end you off with a 15x2x15 square of water wheels
    connect all of the water wheels vertically with chain drives and with this layout you need to only sacrifice 1 set of water wheels because you turn all the chain drives on one set of "[w][a][w]" in a stairway pattern (cant do it all in one layer because neighboring "[w][a][w]" will conflict and break the chain drives) or a bumpy pattern :> you connect them horizontally with a gearbox because they will be rotating in opposite directions and thats what a gearbox is for
    the pattern i listed above is meant to be at the absolute build limit and the water will fall all the way down to bedrock/void to make all of the water wheels rotate
    hopefully what i said made sense because it does to me :P
    all of this was thought instantly by my micro management brain the second i seed you say that [w][a][w][a][w][a][w][a][w][a][w][a][w][a][w][a] was the best pattern and then spaced it all odd lol
