I'm pretty sure the idea is that she was somewhat playing their relationship off as she probably felt hurt and abandoned by his sudden disappearance. Originally she wasn't even aware that he died until she did. She figured he was a player that just ghosted her. It's not all that uncommon to downplay a past relationship after having your feelings hurt or it not working out for less than optimal reasons.
I came to watch this after playing this scene from the remake. I can't help but to fall in love with Aeris/Aerith again. They made her character so beautiful!

I came here because of the remake, where she tells Cloud his name and he spaces out because it's interfering with his memories. I thought to myself, 'wasnt she able to say his name in the og, without him spazzing out?' And it turns out she didn't even say it. Nice detail
So glad that they remade this the first one was great but the remake is even better than the first one has even more story and plot twist than the first hopefully they'll continue with it

The plot ghosts blurred out Aerith saying Zack's name, cuz she originally didn't say it. Damn, the remake is dunking and twisting on people's nostalgia by rewriting what you think happened into something aware of what it is.
I mean, technically they only knew each other for like about two months. Then zack disappeared for four years and she felt him die in the lifestream. Sure it was really sweet and romantic, but I doubt you can call that a serious relationship

It's possible that even when your relationship with someone wasn't a serious one, you still loved them. I mean, it's not like Zack and Aerith were officially boyfriend/girlfriend, were engaged, or ready to get married. So, yeah, it's understandable why she said they weren't serious. She did have feelings for him at the time though, just like how anyone might have feelings for someone even if they're not in an official relationship. People always argue about how long they'd known each other but I don't think the exact amount of time matters. It's more about whether anything serious had developed in the time that they'd spent together. I think Crisis Core makes it clear that during that time, they didn't see each other much, just a few times in between Zack's busy schedule. I mean, there's a reason why one of Aerith's wishes back then had been for the two to spend more time together. Clearly, Zack was busy and they never got to the stage of really developing their relationship. This is why it makes sense that although Aerith had loved him, the relationship they shared hadn't been a serious one.
After watching this a few more times I've noticed a few things that negate whatever romance is supposed to be in this scene. First, Cloud shrugs when he's told to join Aerith on the slide. Really gives off the idea that he doesn't care. Second, Aerith immediately asks Cloud a question about his rank that leads to Zach. Makes it seem like she's already thinking about Zach instead of Cloud. Third, while the two are talking Cloud stops everything to point out Tifa. Not something you do when you are trying to have a romantic moment with someone else. Fourth, Aerith chases after Tifa before Cloud. This could indicate that she was dedicated to changing the subject and get space from Cloud. Finally, Cloud tries to convince Aerith to go home so he can go after Tifa alone and even shakes his head on disappointment when she doesn't listen. Another thing you don't do when trying to spend more time with someone, especially romantic moments. Obviously these moments could have other meanings behind them but to me it really just seems like a casual platonic conversation between two people instead of a romantic bonding moment between future lovers. The Remake version of this scene is more romantic feeling that the OG, not that it proves anything definitive. All this to say, the OG7 Aerith and Cloud ship shouldn't use this scene as proof positive that they love each other and it also can read as pro Aerith x Zach and Cloud and Tifa.
OG7 Aerith didn't care about Zack almost at all, in OG7 Zack if you actully read proper translation from Japanese, Zack was kind of a fuckboy, who liked many different girls, and his relationship with Aerith wasn't even a little serious, she liked him for a while, but then moved on since she thought he just left her for another girl (her words). And later she admits to Cloud that she likes him more than she ever did like Zack. (in the Remake of course they did change many relationships, including Aerith and Zack, and I like their relationship in CC, but in the OG it didn't exist). Btw in the making of the game Aerith, Cloud and Barret were the main characters, while Tifa was created later as an NPC, she was added to the main cast much later. It's not something I came up with, you can find this official information. Plus when they were marketing the game, they used many time the phrase "a tragic love that can never be...", you know why? Because Aerith dies and Cloud loses her.

Every time Zack is mentioned (usually by her) she slumps and lowers her head as if she was sad. This hints that she still has feelings for him. The real clue is when she learns that he's dead. Aerith runs out of the house away from Zack's parents. She claims she just feels bad for the parents but Aerith is extremely compassionate and healing people is her thing, so it's unusual for her to abandon people in pain about their son. Unless, she's also feeling the loss of Zack herself and needed to be alone to deal with it. So thanks to body language and her other actions we can't take her words as the full story. The things she said about Zack were true but it didn't stop her from loving Zack and it didn't stop her from trying to move on with Cloud. Tifa was never an NPC. She was created later on in the game's development but specifically to be Cloud's true romantic partner. Aerith's death was decided early in the development and Cloud needed a romantic connection for the rest of the game especially for the scene where Cloud loses himself and needs help being put back together. Enter Tifa, a character that has the looks and characteristics that were perfect for Cloud and his own preferences. And when it comes to commercials, they make mistakes all the time.

I am saying that the creators have Tifa is the primary love interest since Aerith is designed to die early and all the stuff that comes with that. Like Aerith getting killed and Tifa help Cloud get his mind back together and their time under the Highwind.

Tifa notices this when she didn't believe that everything the Don was saying about the plate falling was true Aerith knows better, that was when Tifa asked "Aerith, what are you not telling us?" . Aerith also tried to tamper this reality by saving millions of lives during the plate fall. The whispers are actively trying to erase Aerith's memories of future events. The whispers surrounding the Shinra building are also trying to help Shinra and midgar as a whole across all realities, because it is Midgar where the massive Sister Ray was placed in the defining moments of the 1st game, where it was used to destroy the barrier in the northern crater housing Jenova-Sephiroth. the But it's not just Aerith that comes from the future, a reunion cloud aka future Sephiroth is also trying to do things his way, but the first thing that needs to be done is defeat the whispers so everyone actually has a choice.
