I commented on this video 2 years ago after having bought the 12e (under the name "LindyLoulie"), and now I am watching/listening to it again after having bought the 10e. I am now in love with the 10e too! So now I will contribute a followup to my original comments.
I see that there are 27 thumbs-down for this video. I can't understand why anyone could possibly dislike it. This is still simply the very best demo of these two Taylor Academy model guitars on RUclips! It demonstrates the instruments both unplugged and plugged-in. It gives the listener a great idea as to what the tonal capabilities of these instruments are. The playing is not just someone hammering away at chord changes which is so often the case with so-called "reviews" of guitars. The recording levels are perfect, both mic'd and plugged-in. This video gives the listener a good preview of what a finger stylist could do with these guitars -- which is the style in which I play. For what it's worth, I have found that the 10e gives me a fuller sound with more low end as compared with the 12e. I think that has to do with the body shape and size. Dreadnoughts naturally by design produce more low end. Also, for some reason the action on the 10e is lower and more comfortable than the 12e as well. This is probably a result of a different setup. I imagine the 12e could be set up similarly. These guitars, although aimed at the beginner, are very capable of providing the gigging musician a wonderful instrument to perform with at a price which won't empty the wallet. They are well-made, and to me the simplicity of their design creates a "beauty" all their own. It is true that sometimes less is more. For perspective -- I own two Martins -- a D-41 Reimagined, and a D-45 Custom Shop piece -- and I thoroughly enjoy playing the reduced-size Taylor 10e just as much as I do the Martins. The diminutive size of the Taylor is more comfortable to play, and the tone is very satisfying. Although I bought these Taylors to use as "couch guitars," I would have no problem gigging with them -- especially in situations where the weather conditions are such that I wouldn't want my expensive instruments to be exposed to the elements. Bottom line: These are NOT just beginners' guitars.
wow.. nice ... glade you wrote this after two years ... which help people who really interested of buying one to decide what to buy.. I initially I thought buying 12e, after this definite 10e, or ended buying both.......:P and also this was the best demonstration on you tube I have seen for the Taylor Academy series guitars.. hope he do the 12N-e version also....
Thanks for your upload really helpful. Is one of the guitars easier to play for a beginner? I have pretty long fingers. If I understand you right the 10e has more bass then the 12e because a lot of reviews say it opposite? Appreciate your reaction!
@@RV-rv9nv The 10e, having the dreadnought body, produces fuller low end than the 12e. In general dreadnoughts, by design, produce more low end (bass) response. As such they can also sometimes have a less-even response across the strings. I found that this Taylor 10e is, indeed, fairly even across the strings. Not sure why, but perhaps this is because the overall body size of the 10e is not as large as a full-sized dreadnought such as the Martin D-28.
@@RV-rv9nv I forgot to reply about your long fingers...the reduced scale length and narrower fretboard design could leave your long fingers feeling "cramped" and you might have a difficult time getting good note separation due to fingers touching (muting) open strings adjacent to the ones you are fretting. The best thing is for you to do is get your hands on one to try before you buy.
@@lindyloulie80 Thats helpful thanks! My fingers are long but pretty small. There is no shop in my area that have one. Gonna 9rder the 10e and will let know how it turns out:)
Dude, you really make both these models sing. Taylor should be paying you, as yours is the best Academy demo video out there, IMO
Awesome!
They are paying him lmao
Stereo: 10e: 0:00 vs 12e: 3:12 Recorded through pickups: 10e: 1:35 vs 12e: 4:46
Legend!
i just want to cry when I hear this guitar play. it is so soothing, deep yet bright, but not harsh.
You make her sing her melody as if she is just breathing. awesome job.
Would love to hear you demo the A12e-N. This is the very best demo of the Taylor Academy 10e and 12e on the internet! Beautiful! Yours is the only demo that does these great guitars justice. I absolutely LOVE the A12e! I spotted it at Guitar Center, and to satisfy my curiosity I picked it up and first tried it unplugged. I was blown away! Intonation, sustain forever, depth, balance across the strings, easy playability -- fantastic! Next I plugged into a Fishman LoudBox Mini. That did it! I own several high-end guitars, yet I am totally addicted to this little beauty. Mine sounds just like the one in this demo. Phenomenal! Oh, and BTW, mine has the most beautiful highly figured "bear claw" spruce top. It is gorgeous! To those of you looking for demos of these Taylor Academy guitars, look no further. This demo says it all.
The song is called Natural Beauty by Neil Young, I think it's on the Harvest Moon album.
Tom C thanks for the title
Also pretty much tom petty "it's good to be king" .
That pickup sounds so naturally! Was thinking to get myself a GS Mini or a 214ce, but by seeing this video i think about changing my mind and buy myself a taylor 10e or 12e guitar!
they market this guitar as a great strumming and flatpicking guitar but I think it sounds so beautiful as a fingerpicking instrument it has a such an awesome folky sound
Done very nicely. Smooth and flawless. If I could play my own guitar half as well, I would be delighted. I like the combination of good Fingerstyle mixed with flat picking technique. The mellow sound and the increase in tempo work together. Thanks for sharing.
Very nicely recorded. Wish everyone would take as much care on their reviews.
0:00 10e via AKG C414 mics

3:11 12e via AKG C414 mics
4:46 12e via pickup system
This video sold me as well as handling in person. Ordered this as my 13 year old Sons first(as well mine) guitar.
Love this... just bought the A12E without reading a single review after playing in a local music store. Couldn't put it down last night.
Micing makes the acoustic so soulful!! Loved the review
I just bought a Academy 10e, sounds exactly amazing like in this video. It's worth more than the price.
I personally think the 12e sounds a bit clearer. However, I have a question: Does the 10e have more volume during heavy strumming, do to its bigger body?
little late but the 12e is a grand auditorium body which makes finger picking and light picking sound loud. The 10e is a dreadnaught which means it’s a lot louder with heavy strumming and is quiet with fingerpicking and light picking
@@Pugrug. I disagree I actually like the picking sounded better on the 10e, the 12e you can't hear the mids on it but that is better for accompaniment. finger picking or strumming.
love the 12e. so much articulation
I have this guitar. Its awesome !
I really like the sound of the 12e. And the shelf is just genius! I want one😛
Maybe my comment may help people, i went to my shop to purchase a Taylor 214CE ended up walking out with an new Academy 12E it plays like an absolute dream even fir a 25 year veteran. One thing i will mention is, the finish is natural and EXTREMELY soft. My pinky nail left some indentation so, be weary of that. Besides that its an incredibly balanced tone for only 650 is a tremendous value.
I am going to buy the Taylor 12e today and I would love to know and where I can find sheet music for this. It touches my heart so much. It is enough to make me weep.
I've learned most if it by ear. Just take some time to learn it I got it in 10 minutes. It's basically just Em C and D chords. With a pinky added for what I believe to be a D7.
The track he is playing is called improvisation, nice sequence, thinking of buying the 12e, already have a BBT.
This video was a reason why I did purchase Academy 10e
Awesome! is it possible to get tabs of this beautiful song ?
Is this a chord progression you improved, or is it a song where tabs or notes existing? Not only the guitar sounds great! If there are tabs, please tell it to me!👍
whats the difference between this and a 110e?
Great playing, it appears that you can make about any guitar sound wonderful. It's a great guitar, love mine. I highly recommend for beginners, quality & playability is unmatched.
12 sounds like a good one for recording. I'd go with then 10 live tho. Cuts thru better.
Wouldn't the 12e cut through better because it's more upper mids and less bass heavy?
@@mollers92 That thought works well for a live setting, sure. I'd rather have a wider range of tones for recording. Less tampering of the E.Q. during/after recording. I suppose "what" you're recording is just as much important here, though.
10e is better acoustically - way fuller, but the 12e is just a shade clearer through the pickup, but nit enough to make me choose it over the 10e
I was at the best guitar shop in Chicago yesterday trying out guitars. This one was like night and day compared to the rest. The only comparable guitars were multiple thousands of dollars. I’ve ordered one since the one at the shop unfortunately was cracked.
hey guys would you recommend taylor academy 12 e or PRS se a40e? In my country the price is similiar so i am not sure what would be the best bang for the buck? its around 750 euros
My sweetie just bought me one! Love it!
artsymamanana Relationship goals! Haha
Very nice demo, thanks.
I watched this video and bought this guitar (the 12e) two hours later.
Hey since you wrote this comment 7 months ago, may I ask you what do you think ebout the 12e now (after 7 months?)? Thank you Kuba
I bought the 12e 4 months ago and I love it! It plays so easy and sweet. Man this thing is worth more than I paid for sure.
@@rodnocker505 would you recommend this one or the big baby?
I have the same guitar and totally in love with it!
I like the 10e’s sound better ...
But I like the 12e’s shape...
I don’t know which one to buy!
I hear you. Best to go for sound.
The 10e has less bass sound and more balanced and brighter fuller open sound
The BEST Taylor 10e demo. thank been looking for one everwhere. Talked (played) me into one.
The thing with my academy 10 is that the action is too high. >3.5mm on the low E string on the 12th fret. Didn’t expect Taylor to make this kind of mistakes.
I would love to know the setting you had the guitar on and what amp you used. This is probably the best comparison video I have seen and will ever see. Great playing and an extraordinary job on video and sound quality.
this might be the best pickup ive ever heard on an acoustic. he must have used some kind of processing afterwards. sounds incredible. usually pickups sound so thin and fragile
I've watched another comparison video and it does actually seem true that the dreadnought sounds better strumming while the concert sounds better picking. Why do there have to be tradeoffs!!!
Did you have to have a full set up, bridge, nut and neck adjustment? With tuner showing all strings in tune playing an open E chord the 12e I just got on Ebay shows ALL the stings sharp except the high and low open E strings. I noticed before buying a lot of reviews said theirs needed a neck and bridge adjustment but mine is out of tune just about everywhere! Playing over 50 years.....
Great Guitars, Great Guitarist
Beautiful sound.....
both sound very nice, good demo/vid.
I bought the A10, very good sound and easy to play! I really like this little song, does someone could give me the tablature and the strumming pattern for it, I really want to play that song :)?
I think its a Neil Young song... cant remeber the name tho
Wonderful! Beautiful!
These sound so good, why would one by a Taylor 100 or 200 series guitar for twice the price?
Michael McBride
These do sound great and play pretty well with a factory set up. However, the longevity and stability of the Academy series is my only concern. Where the 100 series and up utilize traditional construction techniques (i.e. back braces, kerfing, etc...) the Academy series does not. Time will only tell, but I will say that the Academy series sound great, and the price is lower than the sound quality and playability would suggest . Not an heirloom guitar, but at this price, one would be foolish to expect otherwise.
Taylor doesn't use back bracing on any of their laminate backs because its sturdier than solid wood and the bracing just unnecessarily restricts the resonance of the guitar. I think that's where Taylor stands out from Gibson/Martin ect, they're not afraid of trying new things to offer the best all round value possible.
Giffen Goods
May someone teach me the picking Pattern Please sounds awesome
....sounds great.......very full tone......like it
I just bought s new guitar a few months ago why am I looking at new guitars haha
Sounds good
The 12e IS fucking amazing i bought it 1 year ago and couldnt be happier with it
Just got one and I love it!
Wonderful video!!! I'm thinking of buying this fantastic guitar. Would you recomend to buy martin d. jre or taylor academy 10e &12e?
Which one would make a better all rounder?
how is the play ability between them?
Por favor me regala el precio de la 12e-N para importar una unidad a Colombia..Gracias
I think it would have been helpful to leave up the captions for the models for the whole vid not just when you changed guitars, thanks
The 10e seems more bassy while the 12e is more trebly. Do you agree?
yeah, 10E is a dreadnaught body so it’s a lot more bassy and is a lot louder cuz of the size, the 12 is a grand auditorium so it has more even tone and is louder with finger picking but quieter with strumming
Beautiful sounding guitar ..
What song is he playing? Sounds familiar but I can’t think of it
This or the Martin Dreadnought Jr?
This! :)
Its very nice sound. I like it. Hi cn you send me the tab of this fingerficking sound . thank you.
great DEMO ! thanks !!
Hi, does anyone have the strumming pattern for this tune before I spend my week watching this on repeat? :)
listen and copy, that's what a real player does
you nailed it.
Great song!
Thats an awesome tune 👌
Can someone tell me the chords he is playing?
Hey! Does anyone know who this player is? And what track is he playing?
He's just picking 2 chords dude LOL
@@kickpublishing I think it's actually 3, but nevertheless it's great and I've been watching closely to get the picking pattern. It's one of those that sounds like there's more than one guitar and you can provide a wow factor with a simple progression.
I think I like better the 10e :D
Every time I think I need to upgrade my 12e I will have to watch this video and realise I need to sound better before upgrading
Is the 12e considered a full size acoustic guitar?
It’s a grand concert size guitar super comfortable and loud, smaller body than the 10e which is a dreadnought fret size is the same.
What song is this
This guitar is better than big baby taylor ?
I don't know which one to get.
String nylón??
10e or 110e...can't decide....
10e sounds sweeter to me. 12e is harsher due to less bass.
Sounds like my Taylor big baby
No it doesnt sound the same. Funny I just tested it right now and the 10e has more sustain, richer sound. I have both guitars. The BBT is a great sounding guitar just a different tone
What kind of microphones are those?
AKG C414 XLII Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone.... U$ 1.155 each one... any guitar sounds better!!!
I like 10e better..
Wow!
Tabs???
1:35 - 4:46
Both of the guitars are better that the 2014 Taylor 214 that I had. Not even close. Lol
Sweet
Someone buy my 214ce already xD
Similar. But I prefer A 10e
Do you know what the stock string GAUGE IS? I need to buy a new set. Thanks
12
1:00 4:11
oh my ga!!
I have this guitar. It goes through $25 a month in batteries.
Make sure you don't leave the tuner on, and keep it unplugged once you have finished playing thru an amp. Keeping it plugged in eats up batteries even if you aren't playing it.
Check out Amazon. 20 battery pack is inexpensive.
12e sounds better in my opinion but I hate the body
The 10e sounds louder.
William A-D That's because it's bigger
It has more dynamics...getting that one
Taylor entry level guitars cost as much as high end variants of most other brands, so can one really call them "AFFORDABLE?"
Yes, non poor people
If a guitar costs like 500$ and some of that same brand 2k+, then yes, it's entry level. Just like a Mercedes is an entry level car for a multi-millionaire.
just elixer strings' typical tone
BORING
