hello :) the vcr is in fact an OEM hitachi, can't exactly tell the original model, it's a "VT-somenumbers". they aren't too hard to work on, but cleaning melted belt can be a pain. but with a bit of patience you can get them back. you may also get some bad capacitors, as they use miniature electrolytic, some of them age badly. edit : if you want to try, you can search a belt kit for the VT-6500/6800, VT-680. those were realeased in 82, but they still share the same chassis as yours.
I saw the Hitachi on eBay. Looks like RCA made some cosmetic changes but it is obvious that they share a chassis. I am pretty sure new belts will make at least one of them playable. I'm no expert but if its an obvious fix maybe I can repair it. Thanks for the input.
@@WaybackRewind if you have some patience, it's totally doable for a beginner. and you can also find service manual i think. i forgot, but you may also have to deal with idlers, specially the one who drive the take up reel. problem can be the gear who drive the idler itself, even with a new tire, it might not get proper contact to the gear. the gear is in nylon and very likely can shrink a bit. so i ended by putting some heat shrink around the gear and voilà :)
@@Whakamescope Thanks. I haven't found the service manual for this model yet but I have one for a later model maybe it's similar enough? It's mostly the rubber parts that have failed. Maybe between the three of them I can piece together one good one?
@@WaybackRewind i'm pretty sure you can find the service manual for the VT-6800. but sure you can get one for the VT-680. and you'll get procedure for belts replacement as it's the same chassis.
