@@Roasted_Bunny Yes. Although this is a digital camcorder the aesthetic is pretty much the same as the hi8 in terms of how it looks. It still shoots interlaced standard definition video on a 25 year old sensor so it will not look like a modern camera. If that’s the look you are going for then you should be happy. This camera has an amazing 20x zoom lens with three manual rings and a ton of control over every aspect of shooting. So, despite its modest 1080i native shooting, it would be good in many situations. I'm not really sure what the requirements of live fighting sport events require, but the only drawback to this camera is its size and weight. If you are mostly stationary, it's probably okay. That is an excellent question. I said in my review the Kodak would not be my first choice for $250, but the choices in this price range are severely limited. There are many expensive compact cameras and a lot of inexpensive junk and international models with no warranty, but not a lot in-between. You best option might be a used model of higher quality or to spend more than $250. In hindsight, the Kodak might be the best model out there in this price range if you want to buy new because I basically came up empty looking for something I liked better. The Minolta MN26Z is available for a little bit more at $299 but it uses AA batteries and has less zoom. If you are willing to spend a little bit more and renewed I like: * Nikon COOLPIX L840 with 38x optical zoom and wi-fi for $299 * Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX300 with 50x optical zoom and renewed is $289 * Canon PowerShot SX530 50x Optical zoomwi-fi renewed for $280 So if you have your heart set on buying new for $250 the Kodak is pretty much all there is. Yes, unfortunately this camera pre-dated the popularity of HDMI. I wish the HDD would make a comeback. Like I said, I have left my card behind more than once. I got to Florida to watch a SpaceX launch and discovered on the way to the launchpad that my SD card was still in the computer. Oops, no way to recover from that. I loved having all my storage capability built-in.

Congratulations. With a previously owned camera, you never know if maybe it was defective. For video make sure you have it set to the highest quality. 1080p should look really good. Also make sure you have it in full automatic for starters as previous user may have used an extreme manual setting. If you need ore help le me know and I'll walk you through it.

@sideburn aside from being an illegal brodcasting setup, I tried that, and it didn't work for me. You must have a powerful amplifier? Digital TVs still use a subset of the old frequencies, so your setup potentially interferes with your neighbors, so be mindful of that if they are in close proximity. But I admire your creativity. @@WaybackRewind all I did was chain a couple cheap Indoor TV Antenna Signal Boosters to the rf modulator and then attach a small antenna. Cheap and easy. Range is about 200 feet if that. Won’t effect any one outside the perimeter of my house and none of those vhf signals are in use anymore.

That sounds like a nice setup. All those portable tvs can be put to good use. But the reason you don't see commercially available setups like that is that the VHF frequencies are still in use. Most tv stationsarein UHF, but not all. During the transition to digital TV, VHF was full, so many stations had their digital broadcasts in UHF, so after the transition just switched off VHF. The FCC didn't auction off that VHF spectrum, and it's still available for new stations.

FYI, I just checked the frequency map for Houston and PBS, CBS and ABC are still broadcasting on their legacy frequencies of 8, 11 and 13 respectively. NBC went from 2 to 35. I was honestly surprised it was 3 out of 4. Fox is still on 26 but it was UHF both before and after.

@@WaybackRewind ahh I’m in San Diego and uhf and vhf seem to be dead air. I can barely even get the digital over the air channels. I just returned the antenna and decoder box since it barely worked and just stuck with my setup. I use the Roku app on my phone as a remote. The range is ok from room to room but it gets pretty weak once I go to the shop in the back yard.

I typed an answer for you but it disappeared. As far as I can tell the XL1A is not actually a separate model but the "A" just identifies it as the American or NTSC version. The differences between the XL1 and the XL1S are well documented. Basically although they look the same the XL1S is basically all new on the inside. First, the picture it produces has been substantially upgraded. There is a +4dBi sensitivity, which increases its low-light capability. The gain control now runs from -3 to +30 dB. It is now possible to configure the performance of the camera to your individual specifications. There is a sliding menu cover below the control wheel, which allows the user to adjust color phase, sharpness, color gain, black level to their own satisfaction. There are now zebra patterns, which can be selected which can be variable between 80 IRE, 85 IRE, 90 IRE, 95 IRE and 100 IRE. The White Balance control now has added three settings allowing the user to store three different color balance settings in addition to either daylight, tungsten or automatic. Canon has also added a new "clear scan" function, which allows the camera to synch its picture to the different cycles encountered when photographing TV and computer screens.

Thanks for the tip on rolling shutter. That was never a problem on older cameras. It's a huge problem on some newer cameras.

I had trouble installing it as well. It has to recognize a Sony camera before it will be installed. I had to try three different Sony cameras before it worked. I have no idea why. Any dv capture software should work, though. Keep trying, and eventually, it will work.

@@WaybackRewind Not with me. My previous reply got deleted for some reason. Sony Vegas pro11 is meant to work also but no go with me either. Did you have to install Pinnacle before playmemories would would work ? I presume later versions don't have support for firewire camcorders ?

@@digitalmediafan I loaded the Pinnacle Studio software first because I figured there might be a driver in there that the Device needed. I don't know if that enabled the Playmemories or not. I did have to use three different Sony cameras before it even recognized that I was allowed to install it. And then It recognized that I was using a digital tape camera and opened the import from tape option. Either way I'm using the Pinnacle as the firewire input. Are you using a Mac, because not sure where your firewire support is coming from? I recommend getting the Pinnacle as it works with everything. I'm not getting commissions, I just like it.

@@WaybackRewind Yes I have windows 10 on a 2012 mac mini but I have osx also. Do later version of Pinnacle have firewire support ? If you look at techmoan's video he is using a combination of adapters for a USB C / thunderbolt connection and uses Sony Vegas Pro 11

@digitalmediafan I forget exactly where, but later versions of Pinnacle dropped firewire support. The thunderbolt to firewire adapters work if you have thunderbolt. Many PCs do not, which is why I like the Pinnacle it converts firewire into regular ole USB. I'm pretty sure you have a driver issue. I would look for an end to end solution that is likely to work.

I said "sizes and polarities" DC barrel connectors come in dozens of sizes times 2 each for positive and negative sleeve. If you do the math there are more than two.

@adamjhuber in camcorders they (almost) never produced a stereo model in NTSC that I am aware of. The Panasonic M10 in PAL was hi-fi. Edit- there were Apparently a few NTSC vhs hi-fi camcorders but they were rare. Thanks for watching.

@@WaybackRewind panasonic did at least one with the M10 and i'm sure there's an ntsc variant of the M10, and probabely others models. but sure, they're very few. i'm not sure about JVC, or Hitachi. Hitachi was definitely the king of full size VHS, they did a whole truck load of models since mid 80's but yep... not sure if they did one with hi-fi. edit : and btw, those RCA are indeed OEM Hitachi :)

@Whakamescope yes RCA was rebranded Hitachi. I don’t think any of the full sized hi-fi models made it to the US as NTSC. If they did I have never seen one. Not even the SuperVHS full sized had the hi-fi that I am aware of. I believe it was a technical limitation of the small head and electronics needed for the 60 hz. I would love to be wrong but never seen one.

@@WaybackRewind that's sound a bit weird to me. considering ntsc was a big market just by north america and japan itself, i can't see any technical reason for not having at least one full size VHS with hi-fi even if some used a small diameter drum. full size VHS usually don't have LP/EP capability, so providing the four extra heads (on small drum) for hi-fi was doable. and JVC indeed offered some compact models with hi-fi and EP. so what they did is used SP video heads to record in EP mode, sacrifying a bit more of resolution. edit : for full size S-VHS you can get the JVC GF-S1000 which was the first hi-fi model ever made. then panasonic also did some with the AG455 and 456 for exemple.

I had an ag450 back in the day the I bought brand new new and it was mono. I guess I didn't notice that the ag455 was stereo thanks for pointing that out. I'm not sure why they were so rare if there was no technical reason but I almost never see them.

Reality was somewhere in the middle. I want to shoot more footage in bright sunlight to compare. I was in a hurry to get it done over the weekend. But I will try again this upcoming weekend. Not to mention the removable battery and removable memory card which all phones have dispensed with. The camera makes more sense to take on travel than relying solely on the phone.

Thanks for the tip. I have several enclosures to repurpose old drives. Sometimes, I don't even use the enclosure just a cable.

Sounds like a configuration issue. Your router may be connected to the TV but it's not providing internet service. I would try a few things. Go into the router configuration to see that the TV is actually connected. Maybe try wireless to rule out a cable issue with the Ethernet. try restarting the router and make sure there is no firewall blocking the TV. Check with your internet provider. They may have some tips on how to configure it. Eventually you will get it working. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching.

Sounds like a software issue, it might be looking for the S-video and you are using the yellow RCA instead? Hearing the sound is a good sign though, at least you know the camera is being recognized. I would search for an option to change input on the software. Let me know how that works out.
