Vivitar $19 Camera [PopSnap Digital Camera-Real or a Toy?]
@WaybackRewind On black Friday I bought a $19 camera the Vivitar VEC S124 [Popsnap]. Sample Footage 06:49, I wasn't sure if it was a real camera or a toy. Seems targeted at TikTok creators, especially young people. Claimed to be 44 Megapixels and shoot full HD. I figured I would take a chance on it.
Branded as Vivitar, which once was a proud manufacturer of camera equipment, it exists in name only. Since 2008, and a bankruptcy, the Vivitar name was sold to Sakar International which sells inexpensive imported cameras with the Vivitar brand. And by inexpensive I mean $19 for a full HD camera.
So I put it up against my Chinese built Kodak camera and the results are somewhat surprising.

iPhone XS Max End of Cameras [Pt.6 Apple iPhone Xs Max]

@WaybackRewind In 2018, Apple introduced the 12th Generation iPhone XS (pronounced as "Ten-Ess"). It was a moderate update to the X introduced a year earlier. The regular XS was the size of the old X. But the XS Max had the largest screen yet to be seen on an iPhone at 6.5 inches. Not quite as large as a modern iPhone but getting close. This video takes a slightly different turn as I decide to ...

@WaybackRewind In 2017, on the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, Apple introduced the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the X (pronounced as "ten"). How to Make Free Portable over-the-air Digital TV
How would you charge it? It's my first time buying a camera however I've seen the fz54 is bad battery life. Whereas the fz55 has a USB Charging? Is this correct
Yes, the FZ55 has USB charging and comes with the wall adapter you just plug it into the wall. It will also charge plugged into any USB, such as a computer. Battery life is really good. Thanks for watching.
I have a similar JVC camcorder but the screen is black and shows “lens error”. Do you know how to fix it?
I'm sorry, I do not know how to fix that. Repair is generally not feasible as there are no longer repair shops that work on these cameras. And even if there were, it's cheaper to just buy another one. Thanks for watching.
Do you have links to where I can find the batteries? And do I need an adapter if I have the batteries?
Unfortunately, the internal batteries for this camera are impossible to find. I was unsuccessful in finding them anywhere.
@@WaybackRewind I see. And does the part on the side with the movement buttons matter a ton? It seems to have gone missing
@vanialeedrums If I understand you correctly you are referring to the, stop, rewind ect buttons? They matter a lot because that is the only way to operate it. Not sure how that part went missing?
@ that’s what I thought haha. It is a camera that I found at my parents place and I wanted to use it to record my videos! Not rly sure where the piece went sadly
Hello! did you tried taking pictures os small things? I want a camera to photograph bugs
Thanks a lot. This video allow me to use mi older portables tv's. I never know that small resources are available. Thanks again 😅
You’re welcome and thanks for watching 😀
I'm seriously considering buying this camera because my current camera (a Panasonic Lumix that I've had for 7 years) only has 720p and the video quality is terrible (see for yourself, if you want to). Does the video ever become blurry if you move the camera too quickly while recording? I use my camera to record sporting events and I'm often moving the camera back and forth while recording. Also, what specific battery type does it use? I would need to order extra batteries and would prefer to do so at the same time I order the camera, if I end up getting it. Thanks for your help.
Also, how much does the video quality suffer when you zoom in quite a bit?
This camera does have a legitimate 1080p resolution, so in that sense it would be an improvement over your Lumix. But you must manage your expectations, it is after all a $99 Chinese camera. The zoom is optical so no quality is lost during zooming. Although you don't have optical image stabilization so it's going to be shaky unless you have it on a tripod. As for capturing fast motion, I didn't specifically test that, but I think you would have best results if you put the camera in manual. If it's not trying to adjust the iris and focus while moving then it will have a better chance of maintaining a stable video. I will post more sample videos soon to help you decide. Thanks for watching.
@@WaybackRewind Thanks for the info. I subscribed to be sure that I won't miss the upcoming videos.
Thanks for the sub, actively working the sample footage video this week.
Here is the link for extra batteries. I just ordered one myself. www.walmart.com/ip/Replacement-Battery-Kodak-Friendly-Zoom-FZ53-FZ51-FZ52-FZ53-FZ55-PIXPRO-FZ51-PIXPRO-FZ53-PIXPRO-SL5-Pixpro-SL5-Smart-Lens-PIXPRO-X53-PIXPRO-X54-KLIC/13791718440?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=102478249
Well, wasn't excepting to actually see this camera on this channel. I'm a bit surprised, actually; it's better than a lot of people make it out to be, and I'm glad you gave it the benefit of the doubt instead of ripping it a new one right away like a lot of people on YT have. Still, though, it's clearly making trying to advertise itself as more than it actually is. That lens is clearly made for some other purpose than a point and shoot digicam (maybe a security camera, or a dash-cam), and the sensor it's using is clearly far lower than it says it is. That 1080p footage looks like 480p upscaled to 1080p resolution. It certainly wouldn't bad for as a first camera for a kid, but at the same time, it really should advertise itself a little more honestly (maybe call it a "retro 480p cam" or something) or be equipped with a 1080 res image sensor for actual Full HD capabilities. Side Note: I'm impressed the 5x digital zoom looks worse than the [insert arbitrary number here]x zoom of 2000s era VHS camcorders. 💀
The dishonesty in advertising was what disappointed me the most. It's clearly trying to appear to be something it is not. There is no way it has a 44 megapixel sensor. As a child's toy it's amazing, but I wouldn't expect anyone to use this for serious photography. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
This is the crazy world we live in when full HD camera costs $19. In 2009, I paid $1259.24 for my first full HD camera. And of course when I was a child no HD camera existed at any price. What a wonderful world. Let me know what you think of the PopSnap.
Might be good to keep in the glovebox, just for emergency use.
@joeprete7424 we used to keep a camera in the glove box in case we get in an accident or encountered Bigfoot. 😄 Of course, now I have two cameras in my left pocket if we include phones. It's difficult to say it's necessary. The real advantage would be to give this to a child that is interested in photography. I would have loved to have this as a 12 year old. Thanks for watching.

Correction at the beginning of the video, Betacam is not a failed format and it is not a home recording format.
This video was not about Betacam so my statement may be lacking context. Betacam was launched in 1982, originally intended for the home market, as was Umatic. Betacam was quickly adopted by the professional broadcast industry where is was a great success. It failed miserably as a home format in 1982. It is difficult to find this history written down anywhere because revisionist history doesn't capture Sony's intentions, but at launch betacam was not intended to be an industrial format. Thank for watching.
@@WaybackRewind Good to know, thanks.
@Capturing-Memories your welcome. I will dig into it further and do a long form video on Betacam. I am saving that for a special occasion since it's my signature camera.
What else can be said but, yeah, this is a stellar modern age camera. Not as good as the camera on my Nokia 6300 4G tho (jk jk). AFAIK, iPhones are a lot more reliable as phones than anything Android based, minus the high-end Samsungs, of course. You should be able to get quite a number of years use out of it for pretty much anything and everything you can think of; just be careful not to drop it on anything hard. XD
Nokias were awesome. I need to dig up one of mine and see if it still works.
how much $USD did this go for when it was first announced?
$1399 USD retail in 1999 dollars. And yes I bought one.
@ wow! I just bought one in pristine condition this morning for $200. I’m archiving old family tapes & found a random seller. Thanks for answering my question about the price. I tried google but nothing popped up, unless there’s a specific website I should be looking at.
FYI- the quickest way to get contemporaneous information about a camera is to search for magazine reviews. This will generally work for anything after 1994 once the internet was established. The retail price I usually listed. As for this camera, it was one of the first digital 8 camcorders, had a 5 inch screen and color viewfinder. It was premium even by 1999 standards. They command a decent price even today. Thanks for watching.
@ gotcha, thx for the info 🙏
Hey man, had you checked my comment about redesign your logo? I have an idea to create an original and rewind inspired camera gear logo for your channel to help your branding looks more dedicated and memorable and you can use it as fun artwork or merch print as well, let me know if you interested! :-)
I have my own logo that I've been using for years. Maybe some day and thanks for the comment.
@WaybackRewind yes I noticed that but it looks like just a png photo with a jpg overlay on top of each other, I can make them combine together into a single shape and concept that looks more dedicated and memorable, something you and your fans will want to wear as the graphic on your shirt, that way you can attract more viewers and also buy your merchs too
Hiya, would you know how to transfer the footage to phone?
Easiest way would be to plug this camera and a phone into a computer and both would show up as a drive and you could drag and drop the files from the camera to the phone. I might suggest putting the files on the computer and do it in two steps. Thanks for watching.
does it film 720p?
Not really. Panasonic uses the cryptic quality settings HA, HG. HX ad HE. The first three record in 1920x1080i and use various bit rates. HE records in 1440x1080i. None record in 720p. One tiny exception is high speed burst shooting, which records 180 images at the rate of 60 per second at 1280x720. Thanks for watching.
SIM card remover usually comes packed with the SIM card.
Usually it does but it was nowhere to be found. I'm sure I have a dozen of them somewhere but couldn't find a single one when I needed it.
@@WaybackRewindAmazon renewed has some really nice deals!
Are those iPhones still running on the original batteries?
Most are still on the original battery. If it's below 73% max capacity it will be flagged as an issue. Most of them are promised to be above 80% and a few are refurbished with new batteries. For the older ones like iPhone 6 it didn't really matter as I was only using them to shoot video.
APS-C or full-frame ?
It is neither. It is a 16 megapixels backside illuminated 1/2.3-inch CMOS same as in an old cellphone. But not bad for what it is. Thanks for watching.
I’ve seen Minolta Bridge cameras too, I wonder what they’re like.
Minolta is another brand that exists in name only. It hasn't existed since 2006 when it sold off all its intellectual property to Sony. Not sure who bought the name but they are selling imported cameras under the Minolta name. The cameras under $100 I recognize as the $20 cameras you see being sold as a children's toy almost. For $20 they are not bad, but definitely not worth $100. The bridge cameras look of higher quality but I have not tested one. Perhaps I will give them a try. Thanks for watching.
@ thanks for the reply. You make some Great videos!
Thank you. From what I can tell, the Minolta bridge cameras may be made in the same Taiwan factory as the Kodak PixPro. They look nearly identical, which supports that theory. The Japanese manufacturers have almost abandoned bridge cameras. Lumix still sells ancient models, but there have been no updates in nearly a decade. If I can get one at a decent price I'll try it out.
Does the device have a speaker?
It does have a built-in speaker but it's not really intended to be a stand alone player. The speaker is more just to let you know there is sound present. Thanks for watching.

Planning to buy this one for my wife who is taking some birds photos on a phone currently. Then she is struggling because of bad digital zoom. I understand this camera is not the best quality, but I hope she will got a lot of fun with that one!
As long as you manage her expectations your wife will enjoy the 52X optical zoom. I was trying to power zoom and record video which it struggled to do. For photos it will not be such an issue. It does rapidly focus and take sharp photos. In a later video I will go head to head with a modern phone and see how well it compares. Thanks for watching.
@@WaybackRewind also consider Canon PowerShot Zoom because of its size, its much easier to take it with. The quality is even worse, but I am not sure she will be happy taking full size camera. Looks like I have to talk to her and break surprise magic :(
@MrDanybelka check out my review on the Kodak FZ55. It's tiny and it shoots as well as the AZ528 if not better and costs half as much.
Seventeen years later I joined the iPhone club. Oh, I'm keeping my Samsung, but add an XS Max to the mix. Oh and it's a better camera than my best camera. Let me know what you think of the XS Max in the comments.
Awesome!
You said it. Greed. Add ignorance. I've had those issues with a good brand name 64G SD cards and 256G USB bought in person from reputable shops I use regularly and never had any other issues with them. Sad part is I paid decent prices for them! Should have taken them back but they were gifted to grandchildren and they have no idea what they've done with them!

How’s the autofocus for photography?
Autofocus for photography is pretty good. You can press the shutter halfway and it locks in focus. Then you can select continuous autofocus. And it tracks faces. I have no complaints about the photo autofocus. Thanks for watching.
@ hey thanks for responding. Which one should I get. This or the sony hx400v?
Interesting question, but those two cameras couldn't be more different. The Kodak is a brand new Chinese camera and the Sony is a 10 year old Japanese camera. Kind of like comparing a 10 year old Lexus to a brand new Chinese car. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. If you don't mind a 10 year old used camera the Sony probably has higher quality. But if you want a new camera with a warranty the Kodak would be the better choice.
It certainly isn't that bad compared to the iPhone, and I could only assume it curb stomps the vivitar scam-eras they sell at Walmart. I actually intended to buy this very same camera for a co-worker's son that was looking for a digital camera. I ended up giving them an old 2010 Sony Cybershot I had lying around instead due to 'financial changes', which was great for photos but pretty weak with video. I'm kind of regretting not giving them this now that I'm actually seeing it in action.
Probably is much better than the Vivitar, which is about the only other camera in this niche. I am tempted to get a $20 Vivitar and see if it's even a real camera or just a toy. I ended up really liking the Kodak for what it is and that is an inexpensive pocket camera that shoots decent. If I were going to spend the day at a theme park this would be the perfect camera to take along. When I went to Disney last time I drained my phone taking pics which turned out to be a real problem as I had my tickets stored in the wallet. I was able to transfer the tickets to my son's phone before it died. Having a separate pocket camera would have been nice. Thanks for watching.
The more I read about the Vivitar scam-eras I'm not sure they are even worth $20
I changed my mind and bought the Vivitar for $19 ruclips.net/video/JSHmvrfBTSA/видео.html
How much different is this model compared to the Zr500? 📹
As far as I can tell the only difference is that the ZR960 has a longer zoom lens at 37X versus 25X. Thanks for watching.
@WaybackRewind Then I would really like to have a Zr960 for it's zoom amount and extra features then.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the love and thank you for watching. 💞💞💞
Interesting the Kodak is only 1080P yet I think it looks more crispy than the Iphone 6S plus. Thanks for reviewing this. I will need to try this with my Sony DSC-TX300V from 2012
It was way crispier than the iPhone 6 Plus. I shot that in 720p even though that camera is capable of 1080p but by that point I was no longer talking about the visual quality. Even though it's based on ancient technology I'm sure it's a modern sensor and it is crisp. I like the focus and zoom better than it's big brother the AZ528. At least it doesn't clunk and the focus is more stable. It's a very underrated camera I think.
I know it's a throw back to an earlier era. But not everyone wants to shoot with a phone. And for a young person or a beginner this might be just what you are looking for. I compared this with a 10 year old iPhone that cost about the same as this camera brand new. Wouldn't be fair to compare it to a $1,000+ modern iPhone. Let me know what you think of this camera in the comments. Thanks for watching.
Your video is sooooooooooo repetitive!
Kind of like when you use twelve “o”s lol Thanks for watching.
I can't really see it getting any higher than this until large 8k monitors/TVs (affordable ones) become a thing. Can't really say I'm super impressed with the footage since it seems the previous 3 iPhones were pretty close to these in terms of visual quality. It is nice to think one can use three different generations of iPhone, and splice their footage together without there being any noticeable difference. Could be pretty good for a budget multi-cam set up for indie productions. Also, yeah, the edge to edge display is completely pointless. That's how I was when I got my Galaxy Note 20. Such a nice display only for it to get canceled out by the otter case I had to put it in. lol
Yes, that's the whole point that a phone that is officially considered obsolete by Apple, that no longer can run the current operating system, is a better camera than any camera I own. You can buy a dozen of them for what a 4k60 camera costs. Thanks for watching.
Why are 8K cameras taking so long to be affordable? My phone shoots 8k but can't find a camera for less than $5k with lens.
Bonita maquina Betamax👍
Muchas gracias y gracias por ver.
It's amazing that today you still can not buy a camera that shoots 4k60 for under $1000 USD, but the phone from 7 years ago in your junk drawer can. Let me know in the comments which camera you use on a regular basis.
Nice work. I still have my X iphone. Still working ok
The X is still crazy expensive. I got this one at a discount because of the small crack on the back, and the cellphone radio is broken. Since I didn't intend to activate it, no problem for me. I guess I'm old school, but I actually prefer the phones with the large bezels and the more square aspect ratio. I'm about to put a Sim card in the 8 Plus and use it as a backup burner phone.
They show the VO-2600 model of these in season 2 of HBO's "The Deuce" that takes place in 1977/78 and mentioned that it was "Only three years old, and $1600 new. and already this thing's a f--kin' stegosaurus" as the characters pulls out the future! A VHS tape.
I wish I knew where my VO-2600s are. I think I put one on the curb but don't remember what happened to the other one. They are tanks. Probably not strong enough to pick it up at my age. Thanks for watching.
i bought 4tb lenovo usb flash drive and it is fake . usb doesnt work like yours usb
Sorry to hear that. Seems like 99% of USB drives even on reputable sites are fake. If the price sounds too good to be true it's probably fake. Thanks for watching.
Wayback, very well done video, youre a gifted teacher!
Thank you so much. 😃 and thanks for watching.
Ive jist spend an unhealthy amount of time reading the comments and marvelling at how many prople want to hook up old TVs to things like firesticks! Dont get me wrong, i love it, Its like steam punk but for the 1980s
So many people don’t even know it’s possible. Once you watch fire stick on an analog TV then you want to hook it to everything. Thanks for watching.
I have a Camcorder, four batteries and dock. everything works,
Very nice. I have two of them, and both record and play. One has a power zoom issue. Batteries are an issue with this camera. They can not be purchased new. I have tried and failed multiple times. So baby your battery. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
I bought the same hardware as you, I downloaded the same software, connected camera like you. I can't get the video from camera to show on the pc screen . please help.
When I get home, I'll take a look. There is one tricky step where you have to add the camera. That might be the problem, but I can't tell you from memory how to do it. When I look at it later I will post the instructions. Thanks.
Thanks, looking forward to it. Glad you got back to me. John.
Wow, you just saved me a ton of $$! Now I don't have to buy a new TV but can use my old ones (with a few add-ons) AND I can get rid of cable!!. Thanks for this great video!
You're welcome 😊
Ah yes...the iPhone 7. The one everyone got mad over due to not having a headphone jack. Perhaps a better thing to be infamous for, unlike the Galaxy Note 7, which has a more explosive reputation. xD Im impressed the iPhone 7 Plus actually has optical zoom of any kind. That's impressive, even by today's standards where most phones still rely on good old digizoom. It puts the regular iPhone 7 to shame in that department; though, even point-and-shoots from 15 years prior to it often came with 3x optical zoom minimum, so it still isn't perfect. Compared to the one sample shot of the 15 Pro Max, I don't see much of a difference between the two (though, I am watching this downscaled to 1080p, on a MacBook that only goes up to 766p, so maybe that has something to do with it). It is, though, showing signs of that processing that is common with modern phones; the colors feel washed out and somewhat "artificial." Same goes for the regular iPhone 7, but not as bad it seems. Side Note: there was certainly some gain flicker with the 7 plus in some shots.
Thanks for the comments. I actually had a Note 7, two of them in fact, and had to send them both back. Chose to reactivate my Note 3 and drive it for another year before upgrading to the Note 8. But that's another story. The 2x telephoto lens was the start of the lens escalation that we now have the back covered in lens. Considering the original iPhone had zero options and didn't even shoot video, they went very far in a short time. Watching the 15 Pro max in it's native 4K resolution on a 4K monitor is like looking out a window, it's pretty amazing. That said the iPhone 7 has a pretty healthy data rate and looks really good in 4K for an 8 year old camera. The one thing missing is any manual control over gain, but aftermarket camera apps can allow that. This series will probably end with the Xs Max, as they get too expensive from 11 and up. Thanks for watching.
I want to convert my old VHS tapes from a VHS player. The plugs I must connect are the Audio / Video cable instead of the S-video cable? What is the maximum capacity of the SD card this device supports? If I choose the USB connection, can I connect an external HD drive (1 Tb)? Thanks a lot! Greetings from Argentina!
