Today is a must-hear episode for anyone who eats fruits and vegetables. Farmer Joel and Dr. Sina are joined by Jenny Du, the co-founder of Apeel.
Apeel is a company that created a postharvest coating for fruits and vegetables with the goal of reducing food waste. There is a lot of controversy around this product right now and many listeners have emailed questions and concerns, such as:
    - Is the company funded by Bill Gates?
    - Should we boycott Bragg’s organic ACV b/c I saw a post online saying Bragg’s is now using Apeel apples?
    - Is the Apeel coating made from petroleum?
    - Does it contain GMOs?
    - Does the coating contain heavy metals?
    - I heard the coating contains a pesticide and is being used on organic produce, is that true?
    - Why are they putting coatings on our food?
Joel and Sina dig deep to answer these questions and more!

The fact that they wont specificy exaclty what the coating is makes this a no-go for my family. You cant make a secret coating, assure me its safe and then suggest I ingest it. Ill pick my own ans grow my own. Eat seasonally.

The quality of produce at Whole Foods and other major groceries has declined terribly over the last 4 years. Today when I purchase potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, fruit it all spoils within days. Its clear its been kept in cold storage and is very old. Why do we need produce to last so long that it needs a coating instead of growing enough good pesticide free food year round to provide fresh produce? Why isn't the money being put into developing a good year round system instead of "products" to coat food. Most of the produce at Whole Foods is from Mexico yet the high prices remain. We have no way to monitor or control how food is grown outside the US - no matter whatever we are told. In a country that could be the bread basket for the world we have destroyed the quality of our food and cannot even provide healthy food for ourselves. Best people figure out how to feed themselves instead of looking to products like this.

I used to shop at whole foods every chance I got, even walking miles to go to the nearest store (good exercise anyway) to purchase 'real food'.
The 'snack bar' was a little oasis of health where you could get a shot of fresh wheat grass before shopping. Even make it a double. Everything in the store was delicious and good)
Now it is essential to read the entire package of a store item to determine the health contents. For example, BEWARE - whole foods Creamy Mashed Potatoes reads in the back, contained bioengineered food ingredients. Also, Amazon kitchen Egg and Cheddar breakfast sandwich (looks delicious and tempting) contains bioengineered food ingred.

Also organic is no longer organic. Gotta switch to the term home grown if you want to make sure your food is safe

If you call yourself a farmer, you should have some interest in whether you are poisoning your end customer. To NOT ask Ms. Du if this Apeel Frankenstien coating has been safety tested or studied, what the full ingredient list is, what contaminants may be found in it, where and how is it applied, and if if, over time, it could have any negative effect on the foods, and will this allow growers and distributors to deliver food that is EVEN OLDER? This little feel-good sales pitch does not cut it.

Did she happen to mention who this “we” is that is researching this fruit/vegetable storage conundrum? She speaks as if a merry band of very naive, independent researchers gathered together to tackle this agricultural non-issue after innocently stumbling upon it . I think I smell a sugar coated, deception from Ms. Du. Is anybody else buying this? Maybe my concerns were answered behind the paywall. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just finished listening to the full 55min discussion. I'm on the extreme end of wanting to avoid processed anything, but it appears that Apeel got a bad rap from the various unwarranted associations. I'm not going to say it's good, but it definitely sounds like an improvement on previous (post-industrial) practices. Thanks, Jenny and crew.
