when I was a kid, there were 8 people that lived in our house (3 generations). My grandmother who had difficulty walking would sit in her rocking chair and peel potatoes, break beans and read books and tell stories to us grandkids. In the summer, she would sit in a chair under the shade tree and us kids would catch the ducks and take them to her to pluck the down and catch chickens and take to her to ring their necks for Sunday dinner. It was the greatest thing in the world for all of us.

We have an 80 acre organic farm bought over 70 years ago, in the west with 3 generations living on it. Even with discounted taxes for agricultural used land it is still hefty taxes. Pray for your local farmers and buy locally. Don't let the wealthy own everything in this country!

Abdication of responsibility leads to dependency. Dependency leads to tyranny.

Linda here…Little House on the Prairie is my all-time favorite show. We watch a few episodes every day. That show and your videos gave us the desire to do farming in our younger years. Thank you for all you do!

Dr. McCullough and Joel, thanks for your words today. I felt like my heart and mind were being expressed through Joel's words. I've reached my limit of being dependent on too many people for too many things and trying to take back those responsibilities can seem overwhelming but we are doing it little by little. Thanks to both of you for what you do.

I grew up in rural WI and moved to Metro Phoenix 21 years ago. The top-down, big government, big city, big infrastructure, big media agenda is robbing people of their own know-how and resilience. Convenience is not a mindset that can be sustained. A lack of independence is enslaving people to a life with little to no hope. Anxiety, depression, and violence are at an all-time high. My wife and I own 45 acres in SW WI and plan to develop that property in retirement into a sustainable property much like I experienced as a boy, teen, and young man. Too much comfort weakens people. Once weakened people become vulnerable. Once people become vulnerable, others take advantage of that. A healthy lifestyle is essential. Healthcare is absolutely broken and costing Americans their quality of life and ability to build wealth. As a Christian, I have kept values that help me discern the signs of the times so I know what to do when I need to do it and put my trust in Him.

I think there were many factors that got us here. And we need to continue to have conversations to disentangle the good from the bad for us as individuals and as a society. Without the internet Joel's reach would be limited. With corporations we go the benefits of mass production, but we also got the separation of supplier and consumer/user. The corporation is not your neighbor where you can have a discussion over the fence, it does not attend your local events and see your community issues. You can call mom from anywhere in the world, but you also end up talking to a corporate customer support bot. Too many want the "farm fresh" meat, but you do not want the cows and chickens as your neighbors.

didn't really touch on the title but the Romans did this; after x number of years service (10 to 20 depending on the time), soldiers would be given acreage in a colonia, as a form of 401k/pension, so that the farm could provide for their needs in "retirement"

Birthdays are at the heart of where this all goes wrong because birthdays are for infants. Every year when you celebrate a fictious creation of you and blow out your light for another year you are going back to infancy every year ... every year you are celebrating coming out of the womb which is NOT your beginning because you began 9 months before that. And you were not created by the dr who cut you from your Godly origin -- you were created by God at fertilization.
Did you have 2 beginnings or just one? Were you created by God at fertilization or by the dr at birth? If you celebrate a birthday you are an infant -- every year you go back to zero and 'they' say you are insane as a 74 year old body PRETENDING you are just birthed -- that's crazy but that's what you're doing by celebrating a birthday.

Yeah, I agree you are celebrating the day you were born and are happy for another year of life that is a great thing. Canning is a great skill and buying locally is always. 74 and still working at that is amazing 👏. I am in my 30s and teach my children the importance of canning by canning food produced from our trees and land.

I grew up with my mother hating that she grew up on a farm. My dad came from a small Nebraska town. We grew up in a very small Nebraska town close to my mother's parents and spent some time with them on the farm and my uncle farmed very near my grandfather. Spending time with my grandmother on the farm was just what I like instead of the other grandmother's place in a mid sized town in Nebraska, even when we got to walk over to Dairy Queen. I still wish to have a small home, even at 70. Just got some chickens (9) in our backyard!!
