My new YT channel is in dire need of some electrocution: ruclips.net/channel/UCjZAhthhLSys4WaDZ9KvY7g I'm DMing a homebrew campaign for my D&D gang, come join us and have a blast.
You can't maximize both instances of a twinned chromatic orb. The channel divinity works on a single damage roll and when you twin chromatic you roll 2 attacks/damage rolls.
Your new videos have the optimal length. We get the outlines from the video, and if someone wants more info, they can check your Patreon. Helpful stuff!
I loved this concept, but I added a lot of flavor to it. First, I made it a "Shaman". They use water for healing, lightning and lava for damage and earth for defenses and some attacks. My DM allowed me to use my channel divinity with the spell "chaos bolt" dealing 2d8 + 1d6 (22 damage) at first level spell slot, and then leaping to another target with a chance to leap a third time. Love your videos.
Awesome. I only played it till level 4, but I remember a crit on maximized Chromatic Orb vividly. 64 lightning damage with a measly level 2 spellslot. I overkilled the enemy by almost 3x its max HP, it was glorious.
Neither of those lol. We started at Lvl 11 I think. The destructive wrath/ chain lighting caught my DM off guard.. gross amount up damage. I love the unearthed arcana feat! I might try to use that
When you find this video after Tasha came out making transmute spell no longer an UA so you can totally create the lighting meteor swarm of your dreams and Wizards says its fine.
I can’t help but imagine a character of this class being the BBEG with his army of goons, but also the younger brother of a party member. Think azula to zuko and the gaang but only lightning bending
I'm playing one right now - Half Elf drow - with a pirate background, nicknamed the bastard of Umberlee! :) Only level 5 atm so just building up momentum!
I recently started playing this at 15 level it is a lot of fun I took the cantrip then make my voice booming like thunder for some rp. It is definitely a fun damage dealer with a lot of options and cantrips this has been one of my most favorite builds I've played thank you
I honestly came up with this on my own, insulated from the minmaxing/powergaming community. Many people told me I copied this character from that person on this and that channel, show, podcast or whatever. But, it just made so much sense on paper, mechanically and thematically, I had to do it, even if I was repeating a lot of what was already said somewhere else on the interwebs. And often, some concepts are just so solid on their that many people have their own take on them. When I made the v1.0 initially, I never saw even one of those other takes on this specific combination, even though I could've probably made my life much easier if I Googled around a little bit. This is my own version, for better or for worse. I thought about doing the Evo Wizard variant, but ultimately, this one has enough power and flavor to stand on its own, I think.
☇😁☇ I've always wondered why tempest don't have much access to lightning damage spells, (just rebuke and call lightning), when "Thunderbolt Strike" only works with lightning. I have to dip or feat for it. Next campaign I'm trying out this build, thanks. Hasted patreon recognition was awesome. I think I heard my name.
Another way to go about it is with Tempest 6 / Evoker 14, for the second channel divinity use + evoker's overchannel. It also gives option to get lvl3 cleric spells, have access to OP magic missile(doubly so if you can get your hands on few wands or better yet, robe of stars), and have the flexibility of wizard spell list instead of sorcerers. Twinned is usually great but we dont really have a good single target lightning spell in the game iirc.
Twinned is really solid at lower levels, which a lot of characters get stuck at. IIRC there was a poll which revealed only 10-15% of the players played a lvl15+ character in 5e, which means most people never get to even play high levevl characters, which makes Sorcerer a better choice. I've seen several high level Evokers online though, blasting things to pieces, so I agree that it's a very viable alternative if you level up all the way through.
While not the most optimized choice, one of my primary characters that fits the Storm Priest bill is a Bronze Dragonborn who is a Sailor. He often wonders why his power is different from other Dragonborn and finds focus in religion, worshipping various deities related to storms and the sea. He becomes something of a protector, striking back against malicious pirates and sea monsters, any who bring harm to traders, seafarers, and those he cares about. Also I took Teleport, just because I like the idea of him just appears from a bolt of lightning that strikes where he teleports.
Yeah I mean I often say "these spells are just guidelines". I always make different choices with my own characters, based on the campaign, setting, party etc. The lightning bolt teleport idea is lowkey genius, I love it.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Thanks haha. It kind of adds to the characters almost legendary status at the end of the campaign. "For if you ever hear thunder or see lightning strike on a clear day, know that the Storm Dragon is near..."
A little late, but this character is perfect for RotFM. I had actually built a version of this I had started as a cleric and ended up at level 12 with 5 storm sorcerer, 5 tempest cleric, and 2 paladin. He has a +2 trident, +1 shield, staff of frost, and an amulet of health. He was an ice hunter of the storm coast’s Arctic Ocean and follower of talos. Charged (pun intended) with ending Auril on behalf of his people. And he did pretty well in that boss fight.
Since Tasha's just dropped and Transmuted spell is now an official option, any damaging spell that does acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, or thunder, you can change to do lightning or thunder damage for just 1 sorcery point. So Fireball that does lightning damage? Easy. And you can still empower it for a grand total cost of 2 Sorcery Points (1 for Transmuted to Lightning/Thunder and 1 for Empowered. Or you can just do 1 on Transmuted for a 48 damage Lightning Ball.) Burning Hands? Now is lightning fingers and you can make it do 18 damage. Aganazzar's Scorcher? 24 damage Lightning Bolt now. Scorching Ray? Poor man's Chain Lightning. Melf's Minute Meteors? You're basically Zeus. It's beautiful. And the best part is you can take Transmuted and Empowered to start, and you're basically the blasting god.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Ye, I noticed that while writing the comment. Fantastic video, by the way! Definitely a multiclass I'd love to run in the future, especially with the new magic items from Tashas!
Cool build! I like the idea of a blaster character who's not squishy, and that's exactly what this is (even without the magic items, you're still at 20 AC, which is a lot for a full spellcaster). The only thing that worries me is your HP (even if the AC is high, there's still the problem of attacks imposing saving throws), since the sorcerer's hit die is low (only a d6) and your CON isn't that high. I think that can be improved using a Hill Dwarf with Tasha's customized origin (which allows you to use the +2/+1 increases on whatever ability score you want); the initial stats would be something like STR 10, DEX 10, CON 16, INT 8, WIS 14, CHA 16 (with the bonuses going to CHA and CON). Since dwarves' speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor, that allows us to spend more points on CON instead of STR (since this is not a melee character, I feel that STR isn't that important, but it's good to have a bit of it for carrying capacity and athletics checks). I also like having a bit of DEX for DEX saves and initiative, so that lead me to dump INT on the stats above. That way, you'd have (6+3) [1st level sorcerer] + (4+3)*17 [the other 17 levels in sorcerer] + (5+3)*2 [2 levels in cleric] + 20 [Dwarven Toughness] = 164HP at level 20 (an increase of 40 HP compared to the half-elf). Alternatively, if you really like Keen Senses/Fey Ancestry/Trance you could make the same build with a Wood Elf instead, having the same speed as a dwarf (because you lose 10 feet of speed for not having 15 STR with a heavy armor, but gain 5 feet from Fleet of Foot) but losing Dwarven Toughness (+20 HP at level 20). What do you think?
Good positioning is generally what trumps having more HP, because 10 or 20 more HP is not enough to keep you standing if you find yourself getting blasted by breath weapons and Fireballs.
Nice Build! I sorta went the Thor route and went 14 sorcerer and 8 cleric. I got a pretty awesome loadout and got an amulet of the devotee +3 along with the hammer of thunderbolts with the gauntlets and belt to boot. Usage of Shields and Heavy armor allowed me to hold my own up front, even though my hp isn't the best. I took metamagic adept and war caster to just allow a full in the face lightning brawler, exceling at wiping out huge amounts of enemies in a flash, and dealing huge burst damage to bosses if needed.
Built a build similar to this before finding this video. I went for a Red Dragonborn ( Fizban's Treasury version) and put 2 levels into cleric, along with 12 into Sorcerer. Along with all the magic items I got him, he has a 23 to his AC, and can get a possible 28 (Go shield spell!). However, upon looking at my character, I realized he wasn't just good. He was Epic. The very first ability as a Storm Sorcerer, Tempestuous Magic, would allow me to fly out of reach of an enemy's attacks after casting shield. This could make me near immune to multiattack specialists, unless if they had a 10 ft reach or more. BUT, after reading the primary ability of the Red Dragonborn (giving me immunity to fire dmg for 1 minute, o concentration) i realized I could drop a Firewall spell on my character, and turn a melee brawl into a burning pit of suffering, with me at it's center. Then, there is Chain Lightning. I could max out the dmg of the initial bolt ( still have to roll for dmg of other bolts tho) and turn most targets into a crispy critter. After all, it uses D8's for damage, not the original d6 for a standard lightning bolt.
hi there! I love this Character Concept makes you almost feel like Thor! Would mind and update it after all the new changes that had happened so far? The new Tasha's "Amulet of the Devout" allows you to use your channel divinity feature without expending one of the features uses....in short we are cleric level6! One more thing! How about instead of 15 Strenge go with 14 Dex and switch that Plate for Half plate? It'll be 1 less AC but u got a point in Dex which might come in handy for all those Dex saves!
Played this build for several tables, if your campaign won't reach lv.20 i suggest to increase cleric level to 6 to get better spells and 2 channel divinity. Paralyzed creatures gets max crit damage using chromatic orb. (Wand of paralysis is the best for this combo) However if you play on a table reaching lv.20 campaign just change sorcerer to evocation wizard. Burst damage is the same from early to mid levels with better selections
v1.0 had the Cleric 6/Sorc X split. I've grown to dislike it, you need a lot of time before you get everything and your save DCs suck. Evocation Wizard makes sense for that burst, though you miss out on Storm Sorc's extra damage and mobility features. I can't deny that Sculpt Spells is amazing though, better than Careful Metamagic.
Best technique for Low Level is using Booming Blade with a martial weapon with tempestuous magic for consistent 2d8 damage (4d8 at 5th level) without spending anything.
Lol, I just noticed this. Don't worry Arbiter, I also said you can maximize the damage of both Twinned Chromatic Orbs in a video after prepping for it for days. We're humans, we say stupid s**t all the time.
I understand you likely know this, but for the fans watching this and being impressed by the early damage, during the Damage Calc section from 9:27 to 10:27 you don't have access to the level of spell slot that's been placed on screen. Three levels of Sorcerer and two of Cleric limits you to 2nd level spell slots, not 3rd like what is listed because spell slots of each level are limited by levels in the class, not the overall character level. Thus a Sorcerer 3/Cleric 2 would have access to 2nd level sorcerer spells, and 1st level Cleric spells. Because of this, you can't cast Shatter on a level three spell slot. This lowers the damage calculations listed, but shouldn't be enough to be super impactful. Just have to wait a little bit for the damage to really come online Edit: Read replies below. My statement about spell slots was incorrect
Not true, check out the multiclassing rules on spellcasting in PHB and you'll see I'm right. You can also make more slots via Font of Magic, though I might've overestimated how many lvl3 slots you can use, that could very well be the case...
To be absolutely precise with what I mean. Yes, you are right about spells, you can only learn spells of a level which the class levels allow you. However, NO, you are not right about spellslots. When you combine 2 fullcasters, you always have the same number of spellslots as if you are a single-class fullcaster. Things do get a bit messier when combining half/third-casters like Paladins and Eldritch Knights with full casters like Sorcerers and Wizards, but in either case, you have more spellslots than each of the classes allows on its own. PHB page 163+ "... Spell Slots. You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes, and a third of your fighter or rogue levels (rounded down) if you have the Eldritch Knight or the Arcane Trickster feature. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table...." If you check that table, you will see that a Sorc 3/Cleric 2 is a level 5 multiclass spellcaster, so you have two level 3, three level 2 and four level 1 spellslots. Again, you can make more via sorcerer's Font of Magic, though IIRC I might've overstimated how many in the damage calc by accident.
Yup, Transmuted metamagic makes this blasty boi much more versatile regarding its spell choices. Sorcerers overall got a nice buff, can't wait to play one.
At level 5 with 3 levels of sorcerer, you would only have 3 sorcerecy points. So wouldn't be able to constantly twin chromatic orb or shatter for round after round. You'd be able to twin it at level 3 a single time before a long rest.
In terms of storm blaster, I think an Evoker Wizard is better than Storm Sorc. Sculp Spell is a lot better than Careful Spell since they take no damage instead of half and it's free, and at Wizard 14 you get Overchannel which is similar to Destructive Wrath but also works with other damage types.
You have to wait 14 levels to get Overchannel, meanwhile Storm Sorc can deal extra damage right away in Tier 1 and 2. I do agree about sculpt spells, but in a lot of cases, you will clip you Rogues and Monks and Barbarians with your spells if your have no other option, so they can either Evasion it to 0 or just soak the damage. Also, WAAAY less theme with Evocation Wizard. Despite the name of this channel, I love me some strong theme with my characters.
Please, make a short video of a v3.0 of this cool build, as Transmutation Metamagic is now official. And consider Air Genasi and Vuman as races for that, and also the Metamagic Adept feat first (more sorc points - phb2024 version of this feat will even give +1 to CHA) to maximize the uses of Twinned and Transmuted Spell as also having Quickened and Carefull Spell early.
I believe I mentioned the Elemental Spell metamagic from the Class Features UA. Transmuted Spell is basically that, but renamed and slightly better, because you can manipulate poison damage as well. Fun times ahead, definitely.
With Tasha's option to swap arround your racial stats, wouldn't it be better to be a mountain dwarf? This way you could dump str, since you wouldn't need it to use heavy armor, and you could bump con even higher (and still have some extra points to move arround if you wanted to, maybe get dex a bit higher considering it's a common save, or get a higher wis to use the Wrath of the Storm feature one extra time per long rest).
I think that if you have acces to the UA, seeing the spell list you advise to take you should skip elemental adept until level 12, because you have a more varius array of elemental damage, so the 1 enemy with resistence you can use the Fire atribute on Fireball, in this way you can have 18 charisma by level 10 thats a little bit better, you can even skip it all togher because you have multpe source of elemental damage and the chance that you fight the same resistant/immune enemy is pretty low, and if thats the case you can take the feat at some point
It really depends, +1 to spell save DC is only incrementally better, but same can be said about the circumstantial damage increase. If your roll a bunch of 1s on the damage dice, Elemental Adept will provide that soft cushion against major disappointment, but if the enemy just so happens to roll 1 below your spell save DC after you've bumped your CHA to 18, you won't care too much about the damage roll either. I prefer the consistency of Elemental Adept, especially with lightning damage, but no character survives contact with a DM or a campaign either, so I can see how higher CHA can be beneficial too.
I am currently playing a Storm Sorcerer which I am about to multiclass with Wizard: Bladesinger. I'm using a drow and once I get my Bladesong ability, I will be using a whip(already got one...that that attack to your body...mm Draeric something) My main focus of that char is to play midrange and be the bait.
Love the character creation! One quick question: If you twin Chromatic Orb using a level 3 spell slot, do you use only 1 sorcery points or 3 sorcery points?
Any suggestions for a lovecraftian build? I'm thinking of focusing mainly on psychic, force, and cold damage. Just a solid build that focuses on unknown/wierd spells and abilities.
@@dankingsley3717 Well, you could always just use The Great Old One patron from the player's handbook and mix it w/ shadow sorcerer from xanathar's. Then just cherry pick the sorcerer spells you'd like for your build. A lot of good ones are in xanathar's that sound right up your alley. This way you would get telepathic abilities, teleportation abilities, psychic resistance, be harder to kill, get a hound of ill omen that you could flavor to look like an aberration if you want, etc
Well, I can only agree with everything Nick said already. You could flavor Whispers Bard in a lovecraftian manner, but that's about it I think. They've been releasing a lot of subclass UAs lately and Mind Flayers are in basically all of Baldur's Gate 3 promos, so I fully expect a tabletop expansion with a lot of these funky and fun options made official.
Could you choose to start as a Storm sorcerer first and scoop up 2 tempest levels later? You get con proficiency that way and the heavy armor/martial weapons comes from a tempest feature rather than a cleric feature. That would help with keeping concentration
Yup, I've seen an even higher level on an online server once. He was surrounded and he just unloaded his Chain Lightning, clipping 5 enemies for 80-something damage each. It was insane even though half of them passed their saves. He got dropped to 0HP the next round, but the rest of us had a much easier time killing off the remaining enemies.
I played this build till lvl 17. Onde thing to keep um mind is hold Monster and witch Bolt with a cantrip For some serious maximized crit damage. This build was really cool. I loved whirlwind and storm sphere, but honestly i feel there are other really overpowered builds for sorcerers and Wizards
Oh for sure. I've seen a basic 14th level Evocation Wizard spellblaster, it's got sick damage, but you need 14 levels to start maximizing stuff. Here, you just take the Cleric's thing and go ham in Tier 2 right away. I decided against including the Cleric 6/Sorc X split in this video, Cleric's lightning/thunder spells are meh imo and it takes way too long to get into the Sorc's spell progression, it makes more sense to just go solo-Evocation Wizard by that point. Besides, Twinned Chromatic Orb and Empowered everything + Elemental Adept feat + Heart of the Storm & Wrath of the Storm = consistently high damage output in Tier 2&3. You don't have the single-target novas like Sorcadins and Sorlocks, but you can chew hundreds of hitpoints off of multiple enemies at once and look super cool while doing it.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking yeah and i love the lightning theme. I did with Just 2 lvls of cleric, healing word really saves sometimes hahaha Other things i realised playing, subtle spell and elemental adept are essential. Counterspell and resistance becomes commom at later lvls. Empowered i pretty much didnt use, i rather quickened spell specially at later lvls with whirlwind (restrained condition is great for those dex saves). Blink was my favorite defensive spell, to get close enough to the aditional dmg. The high AC+shield/absorb elements was backup. Be careful using tour reaction for more damage, sometimes you r really going to need that counterspell/shield/absorb. Lvl 2 spell was mainly source for spell points. At low lvls storm sphere and sorcery points for more spell slots was more commom then quickened spell
@@SammaelVanir Valid points. I played many of my builds from this channel, they always end up very different than I talk about them in videos, there are many factors that influence spell and feature choices.
What about taking Hill Dwarf for an extra HP buffer? I checked the point buy and it would come out to almost exactly the same as this, only it would have 1 less point for Cha.
You need CHA for this build imo, you can manage without, but with such a feat heavy build, more CHA is better if you ask me. +10 HP at level 10 is not gonna save you 9/10 times and if comes to that point anyway, you're probably in some very deep shit, so time to bail.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking I've DMed a few campaigns that have gone up to level 50 using epic level rules. I'm actually running a discord campaign I plan to take up that high on discord. If you'd like.... You could join since it's a play by post discord server.
@@taustyz5875 I must say I don't like play-by-post. Nothing really against the people enjoying that playstyle, it's just too slow and weird for me. I am fine with not seeing people's faces, but no voice is a deal breaker for me.
Convince a jeweler to sell one to you at a discount price? Or ask your Rogue to steal it for you. Or request one from the NPC that sent you on a quest to deal with a problem and negotiate smaller gold reward in return.
First off, love your videos. Second, I was wondering what your opinion on going 14 sorcerer and 6 cleric are? I've seen quite a bit of debate over this.
I'd much rather have higher level blasting spells than 1 extra channel divinity tbh. Cleric 6/Sorc 5 would work, Lightning Bolt is decent damage, but it's still a lvl11 character.
Aasimar race, for the semi god feel, give them the hammer of thunderblots, the gauntlets of orge power, and the belt of giant strength and you are Thor, with the channel divinity to call on Odin to help max out the damage you deal. Level 6 Cleric for two Channel Divinity, the rest sorcerer, then go smack and shock things. On the flip side, you could be a frail elderly old man, in a black cloak hunched over, to deliever UNLIMITED POWER!!!!! and make sure your cone of lightning blast them out the window.
If we start with sorcerer then how we will be having proficiency with shields? We get proficiency in shields only if we start with cleric. Tempest cleric gives proficiency in heavy armor and martial weapons only.
That's not an official race and a quick Google is giving me several homebrew variants that differ rather significantly. That's why I don't use homebrew stuff in my videos, it's a bottomless Pandora's box.
Great video. I wanted to play a Tempest cleric on Stormking's thunder. I read about Booming blade + polearm master + warcaster synergy. Would you be kind enough to help me optimize the build?
3/5 ASIs for feats, you might even wanna do Elemental Adept to reduce the damage oscillations, so 4/5. Definitely Variant Human for that lvl1 feat, then you have 2-3 more ASIs to take the other feats and finish up with maxed out CHA in Tier 3 & 4. Clerics don't have good lightning/thunder spells for the most part, but you can do the usual cool Cleric tricks (Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians, Guardian of Faith) Try and get some consistent light source for when you're fighting in total darkness, maybe an item or something, I don't know how generous your DM is.
@@Kiopsyco Humans don't have darkvision, so if you're in total darkness, you have disadvantage on all your attack rolls and enemies who have darkvision have advantage against you. It's a common issue for all races that don't have darkvision, you just work around it on way or another.
How would the wild magic sorcerer's spell bombardment interact with the tempest cleric's destructive wrath? You get the highest damage for lightning/thunder spells automatically, so you don't exactly "roll" the highest damage If you would treat it as having rolled the highest amount possible, spell bombardment would pretty much double the damage. It is also technically still part of the same damage roll, so destructive wrath should still apply a 9th level lightning bolt would deal 168 damage ... maybe you can convince your DM 😉
There's no synergy, you don't roll dice when you use Tempest Cleric's channel divinity, unless the DM doesn't care about rules and just lets you dump hundreds of points of damage. I fancy the idea though ;)
I don't understand why the total damage is different from the sum. You put the spells and what we need to use in every round but it doesn' t reach the total you put it. Maybe i missed something but i'm confused
iirc I maximized the Chromatic Orb damage for both (Twinned) attack rolls, which was an error during editing that I failed to notice. I don't remember anything else being incorrect, but maybe there is...
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking you are correct. I guess we could build a paladin class that has similar aura abilities, but we leave mid-maxing and drift into class Creation at that point
You'd miss out on Storm Sorc's features that deal additional damage, you wouldn't have damage resistances and it just doesn't feel as epicly thematic as this juicy double-class combo
You need War Caster for Concentration, maxed out CHA is essential in Tier 3/4 as well. That leaves Elemental Adept - you could MAYBE do without it. However, it ignores resistance and it treats all 1s as 2s, so combined with Empowered Metamagic, you can significantly manipulate the damage rolls to the point of consistently dealing more damage than you do with just base spells. I'd probably take Tough if I was in the party full of Bards, Wizards and Monks, cuz everybody would be just dancing around avoiding any and all damage. A party with a Barbarian, Paladin and/or Fighter (most parties?) in there? Yeah, I'm going full YOLO damage with Elemental Adept.
If I wanted to play a character similar to this but is a sword priest; summons swords rather than lightning; how would you go about building a character like this; would it be a simple re-flavour and gm leeway or would it require creating an entirely new build around that concept I appreciate any reply
would this build be able to work without being forced to be a half elf if I roll well for stats if the DM does that for character build night instead of standard array? I want to play as an Air genasi born from an Air Djinni and a high elf lesser noble as his third son that he sent away since he doesn't have the predominant elf features like the meditation meaning he does not have an elf soul with a past life. So starting as a Storm sorc makes sense RP-wise being sent off to study and then when my character hits level two I would have my character write to his father telling him he has joined an order kinda like the hospitallers where he'd learn to be a priest to his mother's God Hadad/Adad/Ba'al etc. (a god with seemly many names. I was going for an ancient middle eastern lightning/thunder god) in the letter he'd probably ask for some support since being the third son he is likely to not inherit anything from his father other than his last name and would ask for either some items a tempest cleric would normally start with at level 1 or the money to buy it. Although I'd probably also ask my DM if other than just my amulet being my holy symbol if I could have a spear or halberd with the head shaped like a lightning bolt and the mark of my god stamped on it be considered a holy symbol too. I'd use it as my main weapon at lower levels till I could find the recommended staff and wand. Although it is not the min/max option I like the RP of it.
It can work, it just isn't optimal with racial bonuses. When Tasha expansion hits the shelves, race choice will be much more lenient because every race will be able to do everything pretty much.
So when i watch these, i notice people saying you NEED to have decent Str for plate, but it just halves your movement. Which with the flat move you get from.storm sorc, its not bad no?
Yeah, it's bad enough being a Mountain Dwarf (for flavor) Sorcadin (thanks for the build btw) Don't know how many times I haven't been able to go melee mad because I'm 5 ft out of range. Especially when dashing, you miss that 10 ft. Flanking is a booger too. Do NOT go half movement
can someone explain to me why twinned magic is taken first when almost every spell used doesn't work with it? Would it be better to take empowered spell first?
When you multiclass you dont gain the base proficencies of that class so picking up soc first you wont have proficency on shields if you then pick cleric.
PHB page 163 prnt.sc/tzt777 I make mistakes, obviously, but I've been doing this for a while though. Appreciate the comment, don't feel discouraged, but at least check your sources before calling me out on a rule mistake.

You can't maximize both instances of a twinned chromatic orb. The channel divinity works on a single damage roll and when you twin chromatic you roll 2 attacks/damage rolls.

RP wise. I can see this build as a CN alignment reveling if the storm's fury and chaos. Dancing as he unleashes the storm's fury on his enemies
Chaos does seem inherent, but I actually played it like a mean, but disciplined, almost monk-like master of storm elements.
I genuinely would play this as a CE talos Zealot. Not chaotic stupid, but real, lawless, self serving evil.

I'm playing one of these right now!
@Jake Aldrich what’s his or her name is it we catch the rainbow? or bohemian Rhapsody?
I might try to use that
Ditto, starting a new campaign too and love this build.
Very solid video, it always amazes me how you come up with these builds, always fun to watch!
Glad you like them!
That if after dealing over 200 dmg comment isnt enough had me laughing for hours
hehe :)
‘…the rest of your party is utterly incompetent…” LOL
Does anyone else unironically enjoy the self-promotion in these videos? I find them super funny XD
Ngl I'm lowkey full of myself for being creative with my "like subscribe hit the bell button" callouts :)
7:42 Frozen not in ice, but by their own muscles as the electricity courses through them. (think taser on steroids)
Your name fits the image you're describing nicely.
While we can comically see their bones as the rest of their body is transparent!
When you find this video after Tasha came out making transmute spell no longer an UA so you can totally create the lighting meteor swarm of your dreams and Wizards says its fine.
not gonna lie, you got me with that "You have many spells to choose one, first one is the like button" LOL
;)
Transmute spell from Tasha's is such an insanely powerful metamagic, because of this build.
Transmute meteor storm, fireball, cloukill, etc. To lightning or thunder and it's game on heeheh
Another great vídeo.
Tks for all your work for the dnd community.
Hugs from Brazil
My pleasure!
I can’t help but imagine a character of this class being the BBEG with his army of goons, but also the younger brother of a party member. Think azula to zuko and the gaang but only lightning bending
He REALLY asked nicely for that like and subcribe. I had to follow and hit the bell.
Thanks for your fantastic builds
Glad you like them!
This makes me want to build Luck Voltia from Black Clover.
Storm Priest walks onto the field and Eye of the Storm by Watt White starts playing. Perfect theme song imo
Thunderstruck works too. Just. Just a whole theme songd playlist. I gotta run this sometime
Yeah, this particular character really has some good song opportunities. I can't use them because of copyright, but I agree with your ideas ;)
I'm playing one right now - Half Elf drow - with a pirate background, nicknamed the bastard of Umberlee! :) Only level 5 atm so just building up momentum!
Sounds like a bucket of fun!
Ngl That like bell subscribe was smooth as fuuuuuck
Thanks dude, I always try to incorporate my YT e-begging in with whatever's the theme/mechanics of the character I'm talking about.
I'm looking forward to a Battle Smith Artificer build. I'm running one in a campaign starting in January.
☇😁☇
I've always wondered why tempest don't have much access to lightning damage spells, (just rebuke and call lightning), when "Thunderbolt Strike" only works with lightning. I have to dip or feat for it. Next campaign I'm trying out this build, thanks.
Hasted patreon recognition was awesome. I think I heard my name.
Yeah, there are a lot of you on the active patron list, I have to speedrun it to keep the video lengths short.
Nicely done once again.
Thank you! Cheers!
You make me happy
Well, that only means I gotta make more videos and faster
Just think, when you start praying to your god you can get the bard to start playing THUNDERSTRUCK.
I loved this build before, I love it more now, this is a fucking beast
Trying this old famous dnd combos on Baldurs gate 3 is super fun!
It really is!
Alright, the way you said thr first couple of spells were liking the video and subscribing made me subscribe lol
Great video!!
Tnx!
Yea, I did mention that metamagic in the video, but it was UA. Now it's official.
I love your videos!
I'll be uploading more frequently again now, I have more free time again.
Min/Max Munchking yayyyyyyy
When the math ain’t mathing
So using a thunder wave spell with the sixth level storm sorcerer ability is an awesome amount of damage
lol your like subscribe and ring the bell routine gets me every time
Built a build similar to this before finding this video.
Yeah, this remains one of the most enjoyable blaster caster concepts in 5e for me.
You've earned a sub
Good one.... again! ;)
Thank you! Cheers!
You could take cleric to level 6 for two channel divinity options. Cleric 6/sorc 14. Still have great spell options.
Played this build for several tables, if your campaign won't reach lv.20 i suggest to increase cleric level to 6 to get better spells and 2 channel divinity. Paralyzed creatures gets max crit damage using chromatic orb. (Wand of paralysis is the best for this combo)
However if you play on a table reaching lv.20 campaign just change sorcerer to evocation wizard.
Does this work? BB is a cantrip and tempestuous magic only works when you cast a spell of 1st level or higher.
Oh sh*t. Nvm
Just have to wait a little bit for the damage to really come online
Edit: Read replies below.
PHB page 163+
Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table...."
If you check that table, you will see that a Sorc 3/Cleric 2 is a level 5 multiclass spellcaster, so you have two level 3, three level 2 and four level 1 spellslots. Again, you can make more via sorcerer's Font of Magic, though IIRC I might've overstimated how many in the damage calc by accident.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Yes, you are correct. Apologies as I had the 5e and 3.5 rules mixed up in my head
@@1FallenPhoenix no prob
Tasha added the elemental meta magic!
Yup, Transmuted metamagic makes this blasty boi much more versatile regarding its spell choices. Sorcerers overall got a nice buff, can't wait to play one.
Well, now that we have Transmuted Spell...
At level 5 with 3 levels of sorcerer, you would only have 3 sorcerecy points. So wouldn't be able to constantly twin chromatic orb or shatter for round after round. You'd be able to twin it at level 3 a single time before a long rest.
True, though you could burn through your second and first level slots with Font of Magic bonus action if absolutely necessary.
You can wear heavy armor without 15 str. It just reduces your speed by 10ft.
10 feet is too much, it's not worth cutting your regular movement speed by a third like that.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Dwarves don't suffer the penalty. *Speed* racial ability
I'll be looking over 2024 PHB soon.
Well this is going to get revised. The new Meta magic is going to make this build very good.
I believe I mentioned the Elemental Spell metamagic from the Class Features UA. Transmuted Spell is basically that, but renamed and slightly better, because you can manipulate poison damage as well. Fun times ahead, definitely.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking I can't wait to see how Tashas effects your builds.
This is ridiculous and I wanna do it. Legit Thor build
My drow stormcerer is a beast hahaa right now im Lv8 and...gawd damn...I am enjoying this character
Love the character creation! One quick question: If you twin Chromatic Orb using a level 3 spell slot, do you use only 1 sorcery points or 3 sorcery points?
3 sorcery points. Sorcer point cost equals the spellslot level used to cast the spell
Any suggestions for a lovecraftian build?
I'm thinking of focusing mainly on psychic, force, and cold damage. Just a solid build that focuses on unknown/wierd spells and abilities.
There is a patron of the deep warlock in UA that I've seen that you might want to look into \m/
They are both in the same UA actually. For sorcerer it's called aberant mind and for the warlock patron it's called lurker in the deep.
No UA is allowed I'm afraid
Yeah, check out my progression section in the video, I talk about this...
Saccharina Frostwhip
I did with Just 2 lvls of cleric, healing word really saves sometimes hahaha
Other things i realised playing, subtle spell and elemental adept are essential.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking catnap is also amazing to recharge that maximized spell in 10min, also your warlock/fighter will love you
@@SammaelVanir Valid points.
My friend plans on running a campaign up to lvl 40. I already have my character picked out but I think I found my backup.
Ooo what's your character going to be?
Damn, wish I could join
Who's the crazy DM willing to torture himself to level 40 and if it's online, can I play please?
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking I've DMed a few campaigns that have gone up to level 50 using epic level rules. I'm actually running a discord campaign I plan to take up that high on discord. If you'd like.... You could join since it's a play by post discord server.
@@taustyz5875 I must say I don't like play-by-post. Nothing really against the people enjoying that playstyle, it's just too slow and weird for me. I am fine with not seeing people's faces, but no voice is a deal breaker for me.
Huzzah!!!
For chromatic orb how are you getting the M ( diamond worth at least 50gp ) at lvl 1?
Convince a jeweler to sell one to you at a discount price?
Or ask your Rogue to steal it for you.
Or request one from the NPC that sent you on a quest to deal with a problem and negotiate smaller gold reward in return.
How are you able to wear plate? Tempest Cleric only has light and medium proficiency. No proficiency means no spell casting. What am I missing?
Scratch this question. I had not selected Tempest as domain which is what gives you heavy armor
First off, love your videos. Second, I was wondering what your opinion on going 14 sorcerer and 6 cleric are? I've seen quite a bit of debate over this.
v1.0 of this character had 14/6 split. I no longer think it's good, spellcasting progression is too slow.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Thanks for getting back to me. Also thanks for the insight.
Would it still be a bad split if it's not going to be a lvl 20 campaign?
I'd much rather have higher level blasting spells than 1 extra channel divinity tbh.
Cleric 6/Sorc 5 would work, Lightning Bolt is decent damage, but it's still a lvl11 character.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Thanks, that makes sense. Appreciate it.
Two words: Elven Accuracy
It's not effective for this character, you're casting spells that force saving throws, you're not doing attack rolls.
PHB page 164, Multiclassing Proficiencies table
...
Cleric Light armor, medium armor, shields
...
I prefer 2 levels of Tempest Cleric and 18 levels of Scribe Wizard, who can change the damage type of many spells to lightning or thunder.
Living Raiden from Mortal Kombat, epic as feck!
Just curious, would a half storm giant be useful to play as?
That's not an official race and a quick Google is giving me several homebrew variants that differ rather significantly. That's why I don't use homebrew stuff in my videos, it's a bottomless Pandora's box.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking I understand, Homebrew content is a lot of fun, and a giant Pandora's Box. Thanks for clearing that up 👍
Great video.
Clerics don't have good lightning/thunder spells for the most part, but you can do the usual cool Cleric tricks (Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians, Guardian of Faith)
Try and get some consistent light source for when you're fighting in total darkness, maybe an item or something, I don't know how generous your DM is.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking I am pretty new to all of this so can I ask why do I need the light source?
@@Kiopsyco Humans don't have darkvision, so if you're in total darkness, you have disadvantage on all your attack rolls and enemies who have darkvision have advantage against you. It's a common issue for all races that don't have darkvision, you just work around it on way or another.
How would the wild magic sorcerer's spell bombardment interact with the tempest cleric's destructive wrath?
You get the highest damage for lightning/thunder spells automatically, so you don't exactly "roll" the highest damage
If you would treat it as having rolled the highest amount possible, spell bombardment would pretty much double the damage. It is also technically still part of the same damage roll, so destructive wrath should still apply
a 9th level lightning bolt would deal 168 damage
... maybe you can convince your DM 😉
Played level 2 storm sorcerer/ tempest cleric was sick had great fun next level will be cleric then back to sorcerer I might throw in a paladin hehehe
Cleric + Sorcerer is a deadly combination. But Cleric + Wizard can be better.
Add some storm barbarian and godly blessings, this is Thor
You can't Rage and cast all these spells though, so sadly that wouldn't work :/
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking you are correct. I guess we could build a paladin class that has similar aura abilities, but we leave mid-maxing and drift into class Creation at that point
You could mix this with scribe wizard (UA) for unlimited ability to change spell damage type
You'd miss out on Storm Sorc's features that deal additional damage, you wouldn't have damage resistances and it just doesn't feel as epicly thematic as this juicy double-class combo
I advise taking the tough feat to pad out that HP a bit
If I wanted to play a character similar to this but is a sword priest; summons swords rather than lightning; how would you go about building a character like this; would it be a simple re-flavour and gm leeway or would it require creating an entirely new build around that concept
I appreciate any reply
probably an entirely new build tbh
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking k thanks; thought that would be the case
I want to play this as Pikachu. Is there anything wrong with me?
No, you're fine.
Wait you can take the elemental adept feat more than once???
Yes
would this build be able to work without being forced to be a half elf if I roll well for stats if the DM does that for character build night instead of standard array?
What i dont get: How can i have a Level 3 Spellslot with Sorc 3 and Cleric 2? Did i miss something?
PHB page 163/164 for multiclass spellcasting rules, read everything, multiple times if needed.
So when i watch these, i notice people saying you NEED to have decent Str for plate, but it just halves your movement. Which with the flat move you get from.storm sorc, its not bad no?
You ever tried to play a character with 10/15 movement speed. Here's my advice: don't XD
Yeah, it's bad enough being a Mountain Dwarf (for flavor) Sorcadin (thanks for the build btw)
Don't know how many times I haven't been able to go melee mad because I'm 5 ft out of range. Especially when dashing, you miss that 10 ft. Flanking is a booger too. Do NOT go half movement
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking i have actually. Was legitimately pretty fun. You just set up and dont give a fuck what others think
I had a bad experience with it, spent 2 or 3 rounds to get in range to cast Bless on everyone...
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking tell the assholes to get close if they want buffs. Help me help you not die
can someone explain to me why twinned magic is taken first when almost every spell used doesn't work with it? Would it be better to take empowered spell first?
Chromatic Orb is very twinnable.
Tell me if I'm wrong but you don't get heavy armor from the cleric if you take the sorcerer first?
PHB page 62
"(Tempest Cleric) Bonus Proficiences
At 1st level, you gain proficiency with martial weapons and heavy armor."
6:22 Blue and Copper Dragons as well. There are at least 25 monsters completely immune to lightning if not more.

quick question! you mentioned starting as a sorcerer so you can have the Con save, but dont you need to go cleric to get the heavy armor proficiency?
you get it whenever you multiclass into Tempest Cleric, it's a Bonus Proficiencies feature, has nothing to do with base class proficiencies.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking awesome! that actually makes it even cooler lol
What would you guys change to make this work for the nameless king? or is it good enough as is
If you take Warcaster(Which EVERY caster SHOULD take.) you can stack some more AC by using a shield.
When you multiclass you dont gain the base proficencies of that class so picking up soc first you wont have proficency on shields if you then pick cleric.

I make mistakes, obviously, but I've been doing this for a while though. Appreciate the comment, don't feel discouraged, but at least check your sources before calling me out on a rule mistake.
@@DarthBoberEXMinMaxMunchking Where are you getting the Heavy Armor proficiency from?
