In this video I take a look at what just might be the most confusing thing about the Helix for some folks. It is how to use it's routing abilities for different scenarios and maximum flexibility. We have the ability to use stereo, dual mono and mono depending on what we are trying to accomplish and once we understand how this all works it can open up some creative doors we may not have known were possible. You have the knack of knowing what can cause confusion and help us accordingly.
Always helpful. Line 6 Helix should change the "signal path" representation so it is easy to see if a Block input or output signal is mono or stereo. They could use two lines to indicate stereo, or one line with alternating color bands/segments to indicate stereo, as that would probably simplify the Software Programming and the graphical layout, as only a change in color would be needed.
I don't think it's possible with the current Gen of Helix due to the graphics in the current screen but for sure on the next version they need to make this easier to see visually.
@@sjsphotog Could be. They should be able do it in HX Edit, and Helix Native without too much trouble, and that would be a welcome step. It would be a way to quickly check if a stereo signal path has been preserved throughout the signal chain.
@@sjsphotog I've suggested it many times on posts (not an official place to do it) and on the IdeaScale (the official place). If they would just change the color of the line out of the block to, for example, red (mono) or green (stereo) it would help a lot.
@@sjsphotog Why wouldn't it be possible? It's just a little line that could be added, so we'd have 2 lines parallel when the connection is between 2 stereo blocks. In that case it would be helpful to notice if there's a dual line (stereo) going into a mono block, we'd see that what comes out of it would be a single line (mono)... I think it would help notice this kind of mismatch. Recently I started adding external pedals to my setup, and they are stereo pedals (Microcosm, Big Sky, etc), and I was shocked to see how silly I was because I had the stereo effects loop block behind the amp block (mono) so I was losing all the stereo spice of it. JS' videos helped me notice this and I think this little addition to the signal screen both on HX and on HX Edit would help.

Great tutorial as always JS. I'm sure this was eye opening to many out there. Keep up the great work. Rock on. Hopefully the next version of the Helix modelers that come out will have a better visualization of the actual stereo vs mono paths so it's not confusing to the users. Ib think other companies already do this to show 2 lines for stereo.

Great information! I try to think of the blocks as to what they would look like if they were a stereo pedal. Two inputs, two outputs. Then think of the cabling requirements (like the cabinet pan controls) to keep the stereo signals discrete. I'm still confused a bit on Dual Mono, but I'll re-watch the video and it will click.

This is the part I'm trying to wrap my head around: So if you send two different mics into the delay with the Spread set to 0, you get the same effect processing on both mics, but keep the mic signals separate - you will hear the exact same effect with one mic on the left and the other mic on the right? As opposed to keeping the spread maxed, where you would get, say, the 57 as a dry signal on one side, and the 4038 getting the delays on the other side? Hmm... The first instance is not what I would have expected, if I'm understanding this. I would expect to get a mono signal, as though I picked a mono delay if I set the spread to 0.
Jason, for stereo, do you prefer a tape delay like in this video or the Dual Delay?

But what if i put stereo delay / verbs after one amp and one IR in the path. will it count as stereo or it’ll summed to mono ?

Cool video!! Do you know if there's a stereo amp?? I like to put my delay in front of an amp. I know one option is to put two amps (split right-left) but with the Helix stomp @line6movies there's no enough DSP. Any other option?? Thanks!!!
Hello Jason, after watching this I checked the template presets you created recently, and found that the volume pedal was set for mono. Does this negate the stereo setup before it?
