  • If you are thinking about what to take bikepacking in Japan, or just curious on what Mighty was carrying around in his bags - this is the video for you.
Mighty breaks it all down into 3 baskets:
    - what he used, and would take again
    - what he didnt use, but would still take again
    - what he didnt use, and wouldnt take next time...
How many kilograms of excess stuff did Mighty bring? Did Mighty really bring shampoo? Was the Omnicharge worth bringing? All these questions and more will be answered in this video.
Thank you to all the supporters who have made donations to Movember - thanks to your contributions Mighty has raised more than $1000 for men's health!
There is no obligation, but you can donate to the fundraising at this link: au.movember.co...

Thanks! It's great to see what you brought. I thought it was going to weigh more. That's not much more than I carry when I walk it.

Very interesting video. I did a 1200km and 3400 km bikepacking trips in Japan in sandals. So you don't really need any specialized shoes. Didn't take a lock either but having one sure brings peace of mind when you are shopping.
During my 6 weeks trip, without pilgrim clothes I got gifts 4 or 5 times from generous strangers (food, beverage). It's already amazing but yes, it's an order of magnitude less than what you receive if you are wearing pilgrim apparels.
I do agree with you about pretty much everything except for the nails cutter. I didn't bring one and had to buy one. You are dismissing it because you used it only once but that one time actually makes a BIG difference after a month.
Also I recomment baby wet tissues. I didn't have the budget for onsen and those did a great job for me.

Thanks Sebastien; there are lots of great rides in Japan, glad you have done some too - including the ohenro. Where was the 3400km ride?
As for the shoes, I prefer riding in cycling shoes. I didn’t buy them especially for this trip - I had them already, and I am glad I brought them.
For those who choose to ride in cycling shoes, make sure you are careful on the stairs!

The nail cutter - yes, a good point; if you are away on your journey for 6 weeks like you were, then you’d use it more frequently than I did. This is also important for pilgrim on foot - as you need to take care of your feet if your going to walk every day.

@@TheMightyOutdoors It was in 2019. Osaka -> wakayama -> crossed shikoku -> looped Fukuoka -> Hiroshima (Itsukushima) -> Naoshima -> Kyoto, lake Bima -> Osaka.
I actually brought a packraft with me and I used it to cross between islands when the distance was under ~4 km, mostly in the inner sea (don't know if it was even legal but it was great).
For biking my favorites areas are Wakayama, Central Shikoku, most of rural Fukuoka (especially Hirado island). Bima was okay. Hated the big cities :) No bike for the next adventure tho, I am planning to do the pilgrimage on foot :)

I usually carry some small squares cut from coffee filters soaked in chain lube to clean and lubricate my chain.
