Frank was cool underneath the craziness. He served in the Korean war, worked at a bookkeeper job that he hated for years just to support his family, attempted to break his family's long-time abused by never putting a hand on either of his sons, was a caring grandfather to his grandkids and in his own way was deeply proud of Ray for marrying Debra who he did liked deep down.

Actually, Ray, alone with his father in the hospital room, told him the truth. Then Frank tells him the most disgusting story about Marie who ate a bad cannoli. This scares Ray as he hurriedly walks away.
