Short Runway and Crazy Wind - New Zealand’s Most Challenging Flight

- After a 17 hour non-stop flight from New York to Auckland, I continue my journey to Queenstown, in the South Island of New Zealand. Queenstown is one of the best scenic and most challenging airports in New Zealand. I am flying on an Air New Zealand A320neo in the cockpit behind the pilots. Captain Grant explains the multiple challenge factors due to the terrain, wind, low clouds and even snow in Queenstown. Enjoy the scenic ride across New Zealand.
My next flight is to the capital of New Zealand; Wellington. The flight time from Auckland to Wellington was just 45 minutes. We flew at 34,000 ft on Air New Zealand A320neo. The pilot told me Wellington is usually very windy, and the runway is very short with just 6,000 ft making it even more challenging. Check out the landing!
What a beautiful country NZ is. The landscape changes continuously. Air New Zealand great airline and one of the safest in the world.

Yeah well I like it. Mind you I'm biased I was born here lol
Good landing great pilot
I love my home country of Australia, it's a beautiful country with amazing scenery, NZ is on another level it's spectacular with those beautiful mountain ranges, Love to our NZ brothers and Sisters 🦘🦘👍👍
Our countries complement each other.

Back at you Aussie. NZ and Australia are a power combo
We love you too Oz-Man! 😛
Air New Zealand’s flight attendants are really so friendly. They’re equally friendly to the economy passengers as they are to first class. The food is also amazing. Definitely one of my favourite airlines.
Thank you Sam for inspiring and helping me to create cool travel videos, it helped me boosting up my travel page to over 1k sub finally 😊😊✨✨

Air NZ don't offer a First class cabin, but get your sentiment.
My favourite part is at the end of the flight after they land, they give out sweets

New Zealand is full of difficult airport runways. They all have their own unique challenges, from mountains to extremely unpredictable winds and short runways to low cloud and fog

I have just come back from a month in New Zealand and went on this trip from Auckland to Queenstown, l cannot get the whole experience of our trip out my head, absolutely loved New Zealand, back next year for sure !!!
Air New Zealand is still the best flight experience I’ve ever had. On both of my flights to and from the US, the very kind and caring flight attendants moved me to my own lie-flat “skycouch” rows (in economy!) so I was able to lie down and sleep. Queenstown was a breathtaking descent and introduction to the country. Great video Sam, brought back a lot of memories for me! You guys even parked at the same gate I did!
Yay for New Zealand!!! The scenery in the South Island is breathtaking ❤🇳🇿
@kazryb As is North Island.

I’ll be happier when Air New Zealand’s aircraft interiors and exterior livery moves away from black. It feels very unwelcoming.

Queenstown is such a cool approach from in the cockpit! I know this personally because my dad was working as an A320 captain (he is now 787 captain and at the time of posting he is still in New York), I got to fly in the cockpit with him before he transfered to 787.
I would definitely recommend flying to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, all of those are the major airports of NZ and have stunning views on approach and in the actual citys.
Welcome To New Zealand Sam!!! :)
Has your Dad had to make any fuel stops on the way back from New York? The 787 doesn’t quite have the legs for this route if the wind is not cooperating. I think the Airbus 350 is the better of the two, more range and better technology. Ask your Dad which he prefers, Airbus or Boeing?
Wow. That is so awesome! I would do anything to sit jumpseat in the cockpit. In 2006 I was on an domestic flight from Manchester to London(LHR) on British Airways and it was my first time on an Airbus A320. I got talking to a guy beside me and he was a Pilot who flew the 747-400's and he gave me a booklet on SID/STAR info and talked me through the approach into Heathrow. Flying into and out of Queenstown is spectacular. I am an avid aviation enthusiast so spend time when I can at ZQN taking photos/videos. A few years ago I lived in Dunedin and flew from there lots.

I've had so many landings into Wellington! You had a gentle one. I've had some rough ones and you don't forget those. I still think it's amazing that 747's used to land here!
You can't beat Wellington on a good day
A very beautiful flight to New Zealand destinations.. Excellent Same.
Whenever travelling, coming home to Wellington is always the most exciting. Occasionally rounds of applause for the pilots from the passengers after touchdown 8)
the information the instructor pilot gave was so well explained . that even as a complete novice to flying. I could very much understand the why or how they are going about it.
I can imagine for someone like Sam with a GA license. the extra information you get in a flight like this might be very useful when flying yourself.
This is such an awesome experience to be in the actual cockpit. Thanks Air NZ and Sam
Wow! Four flights in one day!? Great video Sam! The Airbus 320 with glass cockpits, fly by wire, digital tablets, touchscreens in the passenger area are very impressive! Piloting absolutely professional!

What a great airline and crew 😌👌
To see behind the scenes like this is fantastic, reminds me of my old jump seat experience as Dep Ed of Australian Aviation mag, thanks Sam and Air NZ 🙏❤️
Air NZ is an absolute trash airline. Try calling them. You'll be on hold for a full 8 hour work day. They may even hang up on you in the first minute if you do get them on the line. I'm impressed Sam could get clearance to hop in the cockpit. I bet the crew is fabulous. The airline itself has a dreadful administration.

Your videos keep getting better and better, this one was truly stunning. Hats off to the AirNZ crew and staff and anyone else who helped make this happen. Surprised! 2 trips in a day from Auckland to Queenstown & Wellington wow! it's Neo flight ✈️🛫 Landing at Wellington was really short but presence of mind of Captain in cloudy and windy climate will be more challenging.Nice shoot..nice view of clouds and mountains in Queenstown
Sam, Thank you again for the great video and the memories they bring back.
My very first international travel experience was for pleasure, way back in 1994. My girlfriend and I flew from LAX to Aukland, then to Wellington, Christchurch then Queenstown. What a looong travel experience. I remember how beautiful the green waters were in Queenstown, and we thoroughly enjoyed adventures there. A few days later we took a very small plane from Queenstown to begin our journey on the Milford Trek. That was a wonderful experience.

Thanks for visiting and documenting NZ and Air NZ! Great to see it from the cockpit perspective when I fly regularly as a passenger.

Great content as usual Sam, very well documented as usual. Many thanks !!!
a brilliant doco, very well done with great clarity. thanks for showing us and best wishes from CHCH!
Excellent Sam Chui!! And thanks for coming to see us in Queenstown. Glad you enjoyed it..
Glad to see and hear that they are as professional and easy going as I remember them. Thinking back about the time when Mt. Cook Airlines asked me if they could use a photo I took on the scenic approach to Wellington for their manual or when NZ 1 and NZ 2 flew in parallel from LAX to AKL. Time to go there again!
These pilots were great! Enthusiastic, clearly still loved their jobs and sharing their knowledge with other av enthusiasts. I don't see many videos like this, evev at 2k feet the Captain on the left was giving us some brief contextual info to keep us in the loop. I really enjoyed waitching this. Reminds me of the old days when as a 12 year old in 1999 I was told to strap up by the pilot when I went to visit the cockpit because I'd be sat in the jumpseat during a landing in Barbados on a DC10-30, there was even a flight engineer. One of the best 1 and a half hours in my life. So sad we didn't have Camcorders in our pockets back then!
Beautiful country, friendly people, one of the best country in the world.
I don’t remember how many times that I flied to Queenstown and I have seen different seasons view from the air. This video still blow my mind. Very cool to see this from captains perspective.
My daughter and I flew from Wellington to Queenstown a few years ago. Had a excellent flight but was more in awe of our beautiful country. Queenstown is a must if you travel to New Zealand 🇳🇿
Once again (& with my utmost respect to all the other great flight reviewers) Superb Video Sam with the views & scenery and the great input from the Captains…& what a big bonus for you, to be in the cockpit for that stunning approach & landing
it might have helped that the captain in the first leg was a instructor as well. He was explaining everything so well. I almost got the idea that I could have done that landing myself. (I am no pilot at all)
I remember in 1999 flying from Christchurch to Rotorua with Ansett New Zealand. There was some sort of industrial dispute, our flight cancelled and we got put onto a later flight, we were warned that there would be no on-flight catering.
Two things made the flight unforgettable. Firstly, the flight attendant came round with a packet of Digestive type biscuits and handed us 2 each, no plates or even gloves worn.
The other thing was as the BAE 146 circled Rotorua Airport I looked at the length of the runway and thought to myself, that can't be it! It was and when we landed it felt as thought the the pilot had thrown out an anchor or the aircraft had a parachute to slow us. Very impressive performance. I knew it was good on short runways but not that good!
We then collected our baggage from a wooden bench in what looked like a bus shelter.
Had a wonderful time, loved every minute 👍👍
Loved seeing home and from the cockpit too!!!
Thanks Sam.....
Hi Sam, speechless on the approach to NZQN. What an amazing view!!!

Amazing landscapes with wonderful people who always want to ensue you have a magical time during your stay. Spent almost three week in NZ and it was hard to leave. Cheers and safe travels.
My dad is a captain for Air New Zealand and I was lucky enough to go on that same plane you where in (ZK-OAB) and go in the jump seat in the flight deck to Queenstown, it’s very amazing.
Lucky you dude
I love the little in-joke of naming the black 320 Alpha Bravo. For All Black(s) of course.
Sam Thank you so much for another awesome video! And for showcasing our beautiful country and national carrier!
The cockpit is the best view. Awesome, Sam. Thank you for the experience.
Last time I flew into Queenstown, we had 2 go-arounds due to wind shear coming off the mountains to the south the airport. Two complete laps of the missed approach circuit over Lake Wakatipu - that was a wild (and very scenic!) ride!
Once flying into Wellington from Dunedin, just as the plane was turning to the south over Johnsonville to land from the north, waltz music started playing, and man did the aircraft waltz into landing and the most extreme crosswind landing I've experienced
I doubt it was a true cross-wind landing as the runway is aligned north / south which is the predominate wind direction but the turbulence from the surrounding hills will definitely make the plane rock and roll.
Stunning. Thanks Sam
11:17 Never seen a one-footed bird before. What a badass! 🐦🎶

You’re lucky you got to fly in the cockpit, Sam. Wonderful video!
and to be so kind to take us along. especially with that first flight for a few seconds I felt like I was there in that cockpit.
Once when the ferry from Wellington to Picton wasn't sailing due to storm/huge swell, I had to fly out of Wellington, the take off was a bit scary, but when we got to Blenheim it was completely still, amazing how the weather changes in such a small distance.
The thing to remember about Wellington wind is that when it blows its almost always straight down the runway and not a cross-wind. This makes the ground speed on approach lower than normal. However, it can be gusty so the plane will rock quite a bit.
Very well done Sam, great that you have been exploring New Zealand
I enjoyed your ride in the cockpit very much and all of those spectacular views👍🙂
So glad that you got to fly into Queenstown airport. I had my first ever aborted landing caused by a sudden change of wind direction which caused the plane to land other way. Also can be a bit bumpy at times too.
I flew into Queenstown 2 weeks ago, from Christchurch(en route to Sydney). It was the most spectacular approach that I've ever experienced. Mountains on either side, and the beautiful blue lake below.... I wanted a direct flight to Sydney, but my travel agent booked us via Queenstown. I'm not sorry about that. Queenstown Airport also serves some mean sushi 🍣 😋 🤣....Happy South African 🇿🇦

Just a quick note to let you know that ZK-OAB is an A320ceo, not an A320neo which will sadly be leaving the fleet next month after 12 years of service
No it won’t. Years to go. Lease renewed.
In 1998 I was flying from London to Belfast, my connecting flight got in early so I asked was there any seats for the earlier flight, so they give me the jump seat. It was an amazing experience. i guess things were very different back then.

Good to see you’re in NZ Sam! Welcome! I see one problem with this particular video and it's bloody worrying.

I have a feeling in the next 2 day's, someone will want Air New Zealand cancelled. Unfortunately, some idiotic life form will complain. Hope not, but it's inevitable.
