This is Shostakovich at his most inventive period of his life. A truly magnificent performance.

My dearest quartet teacher, violist Dmitri Shebalin... The cleanest quartet playing ever... Thank you for posting!

Violinclass I always wanted to meet, if not study with Shebalin. I am truly grateful for having spent 7 years in Dubinsky’s class but to have worked with Shebalin would have been have been a fantastic addition to my education.

I'm thinking that 1962 was the year that the Borodin Quartet made their first performance of that composer's piece? That's what my orchestra Teacher said. The recording sounds awesome!

In the liner notes of the Borodin Quartet's 1962 recording, music critic Erik Smith writes, "The Borodin Quartet played this work to the composer at his Moscow home, hoping for his criticisms. But Shostakovich, overwhelmed by this beautiful realisation of his most personal feelings, buried his head in his hands and wept. When they had finished playing, the four musicians quietly packed up their instruments and stole out of the room."

Oops! I meant to say "Sightreading", meaning that we tried to play it for the first time.
