    The finest creation of D.Shostakovich. First public performance in my home town Kishinev, Moldavia in 1950 with composer in tears in the audience.

      I have never seen any source indicating a public première of the 4th quartet earlier than 1953, i.e. before Stalin's death. Please support your claim of a Chisinau première already in 1950.

    Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 4 in D major, op. 83, was composed in 1949. It was premiered in Moscow in 1953 and is dedicated to the memory of Pyotr Vilyams (1902-1947), the artist and set designer.It has four movements: (1) Allegretto 00:00 (2) Andantino 04:08 (3) Allegretto 11:14 (4) >>> Allegretto. This string quartet is notable for the second movement's sustained, passionate first violin part, which rises to ecstatic heights, and also for the suspenseful and complex last movement.

    Among the fifteen string quartets like his symphonies, this is the first I have heard today and I feel it s one of the greatest string quartets written in the last century.

    Shostakovich spoke flippantly of this quartet as 'an entertainment.' What did he know? It's one of his best! And along with 6 and 9 (IMHO) a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with Shostakovich's chamber music.

    *Shostakovich Quartet No 4* - an amazing and glorious masterpiece! Did Britten and Tippett hear it?

    A cold Coventry Tuesday as the snow hardens. Did Dmitri compose this crisp cold austere beautiful Andantino in the much harder snow of 1949 Moscow? That moment's not very far away

      So you know what I'm feeling when I hear the cello enter at 5:30 ? To me that's the defining moment of the second movement. To appreciate it, you have to start from the beginning of the movement and get to that point. In fact, to me, that's the finest point or acme of sound (if there is such a thing) in the entire quartet.

      Or universe...I love your approach! To me it's that too...the transcending beauty of a beauty's field of battle and delectation. I will re-listen. Meanwhile, how about the rising cello in the D MAJOR Beethoven String Quintet? Maybe Dmitri knew this?

      Martin Smith A quartet composer of DSCH's ilk was bound to know LvB's output. If you're referring to LvB's 3d string quartet, I haven't had a chance to hear the whole thing. But the parts I've heard struck me as straight-forward, lyrical, and keen. Can you pinpoint the "rising cello" bit for me? (e.g., second movement, third, etc.)?

      @MartinSmithMFM 9 лет назад +1

      David W. Floren No - seriously - Quintet! First mvt. I will get you a better GPS. And while we are on that, so sad there is no universal music GPS system!

    • @BrucknerMotet
      @BrucknerMotet 9 лет назад +1

      Martin Smith Forget about GPS. Sleep is what I needed when I read your post and saw "quartet" in your "quintet." Maybe my sleep-deprived mind needed to simplify things and subtracted 1 from 5 without my permission? Not sure what the relevance of GPS to music is. Maybe you can elaborate (perhaps in a private mssg to honor others' desire to keep these comments on point and directly relevant to the particular video).

    Shostakovitch à èté Très influencé par la musique juive,en particulier DS ce quatuor 4 .ou encore ses Chansons Juives qu il a du cachées à une certaine époque du stalinisme anti formaliste et ....anti juif. comme il a du cacher la symphonie 4
