I feel if you don’t order it , it’s complimentary ! Also , if you don’t eat it , will they reserve it to the next table ? How do they know it hasn’t been touched or tampered with
You are usually charged for bread if you eat it in countries like Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece. You can simply just tell the waiter/waitress you don't want it to avoid charges. In Portugal they sometimes bring a plate of bread, butter, olives, etc. If you touch it, you will be charged extra.
In Italy when you sit at a table in a restaurant you have to pay the so-called "coperto", it happens everywhere in Italy, they didn't scam you. Typically this coperto includes bread or breadsticks, and service in general.
Once again, the extra 2/3 €uros per person, that you find in the bill is called "coperto" is a fee that they charge in every restaurant, pizzeria, trattoria that covers the cost of the service, bread, breadsticks and similar, the use of table cutlery, tablecloth, napkins, glass and usually a bottle of still water from the tap. Even if you refuse bread, you still get charged.
We do not have a mandatory tip. I personally willingly spend a small fixed amount for a clean tablecloth (when it's there I appreciate it) and good service
Pure envy when I saw the video title. The first few minutes reminds me of trying to explain how I experienced Italy in 2014 to my husband. "It's stunning! I love it!"
As other viewers have commented you were charged for the "coperto". It is not a scam but the exact charge MUST (it's a law) be mentioned in the menu. Hence, when checking the cost of the pasta, the beer, the wine etc., do check the cost of the "coperto" too. It's unavoidable but you will know upfront, before getting the bill, how much you'll be charged. No surprises at the end!
As far as I can remember, you get charged 'coperto' in most Italian restaurants. Like a cover charge for cutlery, glassware, napkins, table cloths etc, and the bread is usually included in this. Not all of the restaurants have this, but many do and it's not an optional charge. Some even bill you for tap water!
@@josievlogsthings Never ask for a recommendation; if you do, the waiter will propose what is convenient for him or for the restaurant. You must ask for what you want.
in italy they always put the bread on the table and when u eat it u need to pay for it even if u dont ask it i been to italy few times in some restaurants they even charge for the water of ur cutlery it is not a scam just a regular thing in italy
You don't pay the bread itself, you pay what we call coperto that is the bread and the service...In Italy is like that in all restaurants, osterie, trattorie and pizzerie...

I guess you have to re-educate your way to eat, starting from the use of fork, towel, bread etc. Unless go to fast food, no charges like "coperto", you can eat with hands
@@josievlogsthings It is written in every menu in Italy that you have to pay the "coperto", you did not pay much attention reading the menu, usually it costs about 3 euro.
No it’s not a scam… it’s like a table charge at virtually every restaurant in Italy. And in exchange you get bread. It’s stated on every menu. And had always been that way.
@@TimC883 noo just ask chat gtp: In Italy, it's common to be charged for bread in restaurants, even if you didn’t specifically ask for it. This practice is tied to a couple of cultural and economic factors: Coperto (Cover Charge): The "coperto" is a small cover charge per person, which is a standard fee for the use of table settings, utensils, and sometimes the bread itself. This fee is not optional and is typically added to the bill automatically. It is a way to cover the cost of service, including the bread, which is considered part of the meal experience. The coperto is usually modest but can vary depending on the region or type of restaurant. so It might feel like a scam if you're not familiar with Italian dining culture, but it's generally not intended to deceive you-it's just part of how the restaurant industry works in Italy.
Foreign tourists only eating pasta and pizza. Very boring. Try some local food: meats, fish, cheese, vegetables. I am tired of this pizza, pasta stereotype.
Who made it to the bread debacle?! 🥖😂
I've heard of complimentary bread? That was unfortunate 😕
I did. It's a tricky one

Sparkling and sweet wine is Freisa.
No, it's not negative to dip your bread into the sauce. There's even a name for it - scarpetta.
LOVE that! 😂😂
😮
I can feel your happiness when you eat that pasta. This is what traveling is all about, you need to enjoy every moment, not just to be at new places.
Sparkling red wine is Lambrusco
Fly to Italy-just to eat pasta🍝 you two are living our dreams…

I don’t mind if there’s a charge for that - I mind when you don’t tell me that will be a charge so I can decide if I want to eat or not. That sucks!
Yeah exactly, from my understanding this is fairly normal in Italy.
Complete agree - I want to know everything I'm gonna be charged for upfront!

AUD$69 seems expensive for Italy. But you are in a big city and it's the north of Italy too.
That pasta looked so good! Yum!
Hello to the both of you. My grandpa use to say that to, the food goes down the same way in the same place that's why I mix my food together.lol

Extra 6 euro for that bread? Definitely tourist trap lol. Shoulda used up all the grated cheese to get your moneys worth in that case haha.
I noted down that pasta restaurant.
Josie come to California now that you are a wine enthusiast ❤❤🍷🍷
California wine? Really?
I think before to come italy just to learn how to pronounce grazie and prego is the minimum...😅

Cheapest flight from where we were before, a city Michael hadn’t been to before also
@ good choice i live in Bologna
We in Bologna don't eat pasta, but sfoglia, that's made with standard white flour and eggs. Instead pasta is made with durum and water.
Love you both, but Josie- not his fault regarding the bread. It's a lesson.
Haha I asked if it cost more and he said no. But you’re right, a lesson 🤣
