Unfortunately, one of them acted out, leading to civilian casualties. Djerba is a special place, rich in history and culture. While it’s known for its Jewish heritage and the famous synagogue, there's so much more to explore here. The island is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Arab, Amazigh, African, and Mediterranean traditions, making it one of the most fascinating places in Tunisia. Ils semblent tunisiens avant tout autre chose même s’ils sont très attachés à leur judéité. Et c’est d’autant plus méritant que leur communauté n’a pas toujours été bien traitée. Beaucoup de respect.
And the Islamists were so kind to them, so why on earth are there only 1500 Jews still there? It's so strange that they didn't appreciate the "hospitality" offered to them. And of course, it was only natural for them to attack the little community of only 1500 Jews (some in Djerba) because look what's happening in Israel. Good thing they are not Zionist and Tunisian first. (for those who don't understand sarcasm, this is an example of it). I wonder if these Jews feel safer outside of their community with the generous hospitality of the Islamists all around to show them their abundant hospitality.
Jews were not persecuted in independant Tunisia and were protected by the secular government of Bourguiba. The growing tensions created by Israel/Arab wars from 1956 to 1973 created some distrust between the Arab nationalist masses and the Arab Jews. But geopolitical tensions were not the only factor of emigration. The majority of Tunisian Jews decided to go to live in France, only a minority settled in Israel. Most choose to emigrate to France because they spoke the language, were familiar with the culture and had economic opportunities in France.
In the same way, almost all Ethiopian Jews emigrated out of Ethiopia, not because Ethiopians would be antisemitic,, but mainly because of economic reasons. People who live in poor countries seek a better future for their family and emigrate if given a chance. Regardless of their religion.

Arab World? Are you for real? It's equivalent to claiming that Black or Mexican Americans are of English descent. Tunisia is an African nation that has hardly any Arab ancestry. The same applies to Egypt, Libya, Algeria, or Morocco. People also confuse Arabs with 'Arroba,' such as the Desert Gypsies of the southern and eastern parts of Libya. The Jews of N. Africa have more in common with the original inhabitants of the cursed Al-Hijaz (Step Brothers) than any other Arabic speakers outside of that hellhole called Arabia.
do you even knows what does "Arroba" means? and how Tunisian people have no Arab ancestry? you basically deleted a large part of Tunisian cultural identity. Tunisia ,like every other northern African country , has undergone several cultural changes under the rule of the Muslim caliphate which created our culture this day. the only problem here is the French colonization , which affected and changed many aspects of culture but it didn't change our identity as an Arab Muslim , you can look for Tunis 100 years ago which you can see the Arabic features and even the Bedouin Characteristics.
@@pxrkn2054 Yes I do! Arroba (عروبة) is another 'polite' word same as Bedouin for Desert Gypsies. Very few so-called Arabs along the Gulf to Oman and Masqut are Arabs. That also includes most of Iraq. and most differently almost all Syrians. Where did all the Egyptians go? You and the likes of such would call them Arabic. Don't forget that even Mohmed is doubtfully an Arab when considering how smart he was and how stupid Arabs have proven to be.
I am a Jew and an ex Tunisian. First we are NOT Arab Jews. Arabs never treated us as their own, but as aliens although we were living in Tunisia long before they conquered it. We are Jews and only Jews, Arab is not our ethnicity, but it might be our cultural background. Arab is not our language either, we talked Judeo Arabic that is to colloquial Arab what Yiddish is for German. Second saying that we were and are living together peacefully is a joke. My family is coming from the ghetto of Tunis, so I know about the pogroms we suffered each time the populace was upset. I know about the squalor we were forced to live in till the French established the Protectorate. We remember Batou Sfez who was executed under false charges of blasphemy against their "prophet". My family was forced to leave Tunisia as 99% of its Jews and lost all their belongings. One million Jews were expelled or were forced to leave Islamic countries. They were never considered as refugees by the UN and never received any compensation. Maybe that's why we are not beggars like UNRWA 's flock but members of the middle class in the countries of exile. The Jews from Djerba don't want to leave because they are afraid that the Ghriba (their sanctuary) could be turned into a Mosq. Tunisia became an Islamic dictatorship a few years ago, so whatever they say is not their real feeling, they are afraid. Several terrorist attacks have been thrown against this community. Very soon there will be nobody left. Yet they were some Tunisians who were Righteous Among the Nations who tried to protect us when Nazi Germany occupied Tunisia. Who were the dear friends of my parents, who encouraged us to leave despite their sorrow to never see us again because there was no future for us in the country.
I remember clips of a Tunisian synagogue burning after 7th of October… The comments here praising Tunisia for its tolerance have to overlook a lot, including antisemitic. comments right under this video.

I just would like to comment about the expression "Arab world": that's not accurate, if not completely false. Historically, Tunisia was part of what was known as the Barbary land, and was inhabited by its indigenous people the Berbers or the Amazigh as they call themselves, and in a certain time in history it was occupied by many nations like the phoenicians and the Romans. Nowadays, the Tunisian people are for the most part of amazigh origin, although they speak the Tunisian dialect, which is a sort of a creole between Arabic and amazigh languages, although there is still a minority of amazigh speaking Tunisians.
There is no colonization, says the quran ! It is written in the Holy Quran that Allah gave the Land of Israel to the Children of Israel and commanded them to dwell in it” (Quran, Surah 5:21) and Arabs have no right to this earth . “And that before the end times He will bring back the Children of Israel to reclaim their Land, gathering them from all the different countries and nations” (Quran, Surah 17:104) Finally, if you are a good Muslim and you follow the Quran, you are forced to admit that the Jewish people have been legally on their land for over 3000 years.
are you seriously trying to interpret the Quran with your tiny brain and narrow knowledge? these verses talk about events that took place 3000 years ago, not about ethiopians, khazars, and all those fake-semites such as yourself the "descendants of israel" as a people of God is a story that ended with the verses [4:155 ..]
There used to be so many Jewish communities in almost all Arab countries but they made sure to make their lives (just like my family´s in Fez, Morocco) miserable. The Jews lived unsafe, under permanent danger and in 1948 they were kicked out of many of those countries. Now they´re complaining that they are in Israel.
NO ;Tunisia was exceptional as it was always safe for jews they wre even protected by muslims from nozzis in the second WW campaign of Tunisia. Exactly. So many people love to act like being a Jew in the Arab world was such a wonderful experience. Then they cry and whine about the only Jewish state being established. No more Jizya, no more second class citizenship. Over 2 million Arab Israelis yet only around 27k Jews in the 22 Arab nations. Chew on that
@@slightlyopinionated8107 Um, after Israel’s successful birth as a modern nation-state, Arab countries *punished* Jews in their countries *harshly* with new laws forbidding them from owning property, bank accounts, etc. Many - I believe it was Millions of Jews - fled their countries with only what they could carry. Israel 🇮🇱 launched several rescue missions for Jewish populations trapped in hostile territories that wouldn’t even permit their Jews to leave.
You admit that Jews and Muslims coexisted for centuries, yet you cant identify the event that disrupted that? The disruption began with the colonization of European Jews, accompanied by the ethnic cleansing of a certain Arab population, and further exacerbated by false flag operations, including the 1950-1951 Baghdad bombings and the Lavon Affair

The incident you referred to as a recent "terrorist attack" was actually not that-it was an internal conflict between officers at the location.
It’s also home to 380 mosques and countless other points of interest that showcase its diversity and vibrant history.

That's a complete falsehood. The 2002 terrorist attack in front of the El Ghriba synagogue in Djerba was committed by a Muslim suicide bomber using a natural gas truck bomb under orders of Al-Qaeda. Very Interesting, So according to your video, In the spawn of 84 years 99k Jews just mysteriously disappeared from Tunisia, i wonder what happened ?
Interesting, isn‘t it? Emily seems to not have been curious about that.

They have no specific origin or race, They came out of India and mixed with anything along the way to where they went. Very few so-called Arabs along the Gulf to Oman and Masqut are Arabs. That also includes most of Iraq. and most differently almost all Syrians. Where did all the Egyptians go?

“And that before the end times He will bring back the Children of Israel to reclaim their Land, gathering them from all the different countries and nations” (Quran, Surah 17:104)
Finally, if you are a good Muslim and you follow the Quran, you are forced to admit that the Jewish people have been legally on their land for over 3000 years.
It's called Palestine 🇵🇸
@ you can’t read, Little boy
Who called it Palestine? The Romans.
are you seriously trying to interpret the Quran with your tiny brain and narrow knowledge?
these verses talk about events that took place 3000 years ago, not about ethiopians, khazars, and all those fake-semites such as yourself
the "descendants of israel" as a people of God is a story that ended with the verses [4:155 ..]
You zionist not jew
There used to be so many Jewish communities in almost all Arab countries but they made sure to make their lives (just like my family´s in Fez, Morocco) miserable. The Jews lived unsafe, under permanent danger and in 1948 they were kicked out of many of those countries. Now they´re complaining that they are in Israel.
NO ;Tunisia was exceptional as it was always safe for jews they wre even protected by muslims from nozzis in the second WW campaign of Tunisia. Many Tunisian jews were blinded by the money and the delusional life that they promised them to have ,only to be in the middlle of a war with people culturally different from them (mostly europeans with nuffin in common) A lot of them chose to settle in france later on as they regretted .One of the them is the famous singer Raoul Journo through his song *Sellemt Ana Fik Ya Bledi* in which he conveys his regrets of fleeing
Then why are there only 1500 Jewish people left out of 100.00 in 1940?
Liar. the cause of Jewish migration out of Arab homeland was Zionist terrorism and sadly treason by some Jewish communities who joined the criminal Zionists from Europe. and stabbed their homeland in the back.
@@medusa4944 the answer above you. Although yeah many arab countries were stupid enough to give away their citizens to Israel.
Arabs didn't kick out js for no reason.
Hi I'm Jew from Israel, amazing, i wouldn't recognize it as a synagogue, not by appearance nor by custom
You know why there aren’t many Jews left in Tunisia? Because they were persecuted, killed and forced into exile, having to leave their homes, their wealth and all their possessions. Just like in the rest of the Muslim world, now tourist buy the possessions, menorah, Torah, Jewish art as souvenirs one visiting the country. Am Yisrael Chai 🇮🇱🇮🇱
Exactly. So many people love to act like being a Jew in the Arab world was such a wonderful experience. Then they cry and whine about the only Jewish state being established. No more Jizya, no more second class citizenship.
Over 2 million Arab Israelis yet only around 27k Jews in the 22 Arab nations. Chew on that
They were there for thousands of years under Islamic rule and only left in 1948. I wonder what changed in 1948 hmmmm
Palestine 🇵🇸 4 ever
Greetings from Dublin , I like your content ❤ !
Leave Tunisia alone go get some scotch

I loved this. Thank you.
Emily, your information isn’t accurate. You need to do more research before doing a video such as this.
I thought it was a decent job for someone learning about us for the first time. If you don't live it, you're not going to get it all the way. I, for one, was very happy to see a video about a frum community in Tunisia that I didn't know anything about, and it was fascinating. I wouldn't make a big deal about details that nobody but us would know the difference anyway.
Wow Fantastic !! Peace And Love For All Jews And Arabs 🌸🥰👍
Loved this video, thank you!
Why was the name Al Queda bleeped out?
To not get demonetized (lose ad revenue). RUclips often demonetizes videos that mention terms like that, because it's easier than going through every video that mentions a terrorist organization, for example, and determining the context of the speech (and advertisers don't want their ads to play during a video that supports Al Qaeda or any other extremist group).
Shokran great video
I was there last summer. The Jewish community is 1,500 people. There are other synagogues in Sfax and Tunis. "Jewish" is not a nationality in Tunisia. All the caretakers in the GHriba are Muslim. The problem is with Zionism and its supremacist vioence NOT Judaism.
"problem" is for Arabs and Muslims. We Jews do not have and NEVER had a "problem" with our love and attachment to our indigenous homeland the Land of Israel

2:53 what you mean fusion of tunisian and jewish? They are jewish tunisians ofc they will have tunisian traditions. It’s like saying fusion of christian and tunision or muslim and tunision when referring to tunisian muslims and christians.
I don’t usually see menorahs in Tunisian house design so it was interesting to see an internationally Jewish symbol next to Tunisian design elements. It’s not something I usually see, so I pointed it out. The point is that they’re Tunisians who practice a different religion than Islam
Thank you for clarifying. Many confuse Judaism as an ethnicity, but it is a religion present across various Arab countries.
Sadly, the creation of Israel negatively impacted Palestinians first and Arab Jews second.
So It’s important to highlight that Arab Jews share the same ethnicity and traditions as Arab Christians, Muslims, and others in the Arab world. Appreciate your videos!
100% agree!
@@eliana.s. and yet...there are only 1500 Jews left in Tunisia since 1940....
Judaism is an ethnoreligion and you can't actually seperate the two. This is just cultural erasure you're doing with that comment. No Jew will ever agree with you.
i am a great fan of you Emily . You are doing a great work in Tunisia our beautiful country . I recommand that you visit the peninsula of good cape or cap bon . There are a lot of things to discover. Also there are a lot of islets here and there in Tunisia
This video only tries to make Jewish Tunisians less Jewish and merely Tunisians who practice Judaism, because somehow them being Jews first and foremost would be threatening to this woman. She then goes about spreading complete misconceptions about Jewish ethnicity. She honestly knows very, very, very little at all about Jews, and she seems happy to do so for her narrative.
The joke is that the Arabs still don't love her for doing it.
Ethnicity? Isn't it about following the faith of Judaism, then? People can convert to Judaism, so it can't be heritable.
why are you so quick to get offended lol calm down
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Jews are an Ethnoreligious group, whether you pro Palis like it or not

😂very interesting and beautiful Jewish-Tunisian culture!
Those jewish aren’t arabs most of them are spanish immigrants and some berbers + tunisians aren’t arabs we are berbers (amazigh) yes we speak arabic but we aren’t arabs
Spanish immigrants? They have been there for over 2000 years lol what are you talking about?
Hello, just wanted to tell that when you asked Moshe about how his life is among Muslims, his answer was not it depends on the person but that he don't see other people as a religion, but as tunisians, what he meant is he IS tunisian first like his Muslim brothers are tunisians first.
Yes. He and others in his community are Tunisian first and that’s the most important takeaway
Jews are always loyal citizens, but their Jewish identity and nationhood is extremely important to them.
Please don't speak for them, because they consider themselves Jews, first and foremost, and are ALSO loyal citizens of their country, and will always uphold the laws of their country.
@@20CamelsEmily
Being Jewish first is not a threat. I get you come from a culture that has seen Jews as a threat for a very long time, but it is time to let go.
Jews actually predate Arabs in Tunisian. The land became Arab due to Islamic imperialism and colonialism.
Trying to claim Tunisia next?
@@sisik3241 Arabs and Tunisia already claimed it from the local north africans of the time, just like with the clash against the eastern romeians and persian sasanids in the east.
@sisik3241 just facts
@@sisik3241 no, just reminding people of the minorities that predate Arabs and Islam in much of the Middle East. Armenians, Yazidis, Christians also have a rich history that has been nearly erased due to Islamic and Arab imperialism
@@kukuruku4697 no facts because the imazighen/nort Africans werent all Jewish. We also NEVER mixed with Arabs the way you Jews are trying to make it look. AND lets not sprak about the FACT that when they got kicked put of Spain, who brought the Jews to North Africa? Don't try to educate a Moroccan on our own history ungrateful people
@5:46 Emily Why would you need Candles when you already have Big lights on?
Not just any old prayer in the mezzuzah. Its the Shema. The one all Jews learn as children, the one said by Hasmoneans when going into battle, and uttered by our parents and grandparents on the way to the gas chambers. My favorite prayer.
Yea, I know the Shema, Surah Ikhlas has a lot of similarities to it.
For those who don’t know:
Yom Kippur is a fast day, but the tradition is to eat extra on the day before and have festive meals for two reasons:
1. To prepare for the fast
2. To replace the festive meal that we would eat on a regular holiday.

There’s a genocide in Palestine that has been ongoing for 77 years
Every Tunisian, regardless of his religion, knows that:🇹🇳🫶🇵🇸.
Tunisians arabized them self, because today they still see them selfs as part of the Arab world.
The fish, the hand of Fatima "Khomsa" and the gazelle's horn are usually Carthaginian carvings on the Carthaginian monuments in the Bardo Museum. Because the Carthaginians were pagans and then monotheists, they converted to Christianity and then to Islam. More than 90% of the population of North Africa is of Carthaginian origin, and everything was Arabized with the arrival of Islam.
